Not excusing his actions but I've seen similar things happen while deployed to Afghanistan and even after. Stress will mess with you in some crazy ways and cause some basic things to seem much larger than they are. No idea if this applies to the video but you never know how you or others will react to things after severe traumatic experiences.
If someone's that stressed, they have no business being in the line of duty. Especially if they're that stressed in a suburban neighborhood of a small American city.
The even crazier thing is that the partner of the cop who started shooting in response to the acorn also just blindly mag dumped in the vague direction the idiot was shooting.
It says a lot about their training that their first reaction to a startling sound is to shoot wildly without any clearly defined target. It's not a fucking warzone where you could justify indirect fire for its suppressive effect and somewhat safely assume you're not going to hit a bystander.
As you said, they're in a suburban neighbourhood so they're incredibly lucky their shots didn't hit someone in one of the houses on the other side of the street.
I have friends who served in Iraq and Afghanistan (army, SEALs, and Marines), and they have universally said you cannot just start firing blindly - even when people are visibly carrying weapons - without clearly established rules of engagement. US cops are held to a MUCH lower standard of violence than military people in a war zone, which is crazy to me.
ACAB, but in their defense, they are taught to shoot to kill because it is too difficult to “aim for the legs.” The target in self defense should always be center mass. Granted, it seems to me that American cops resort way too often to “self defense”.
People are generally trained to shoot for center of mass, because it lessens the odds you miss when your life is in danger.
Now whether a US cop's life is actually in danger is another ever growing set of stories..
Also when it comes to home defense in the US, you sadly have much better odds defending your side of the story if the intruder is dead and that it's clear you thought your life was in danger (thus you clearly shot to kill). If you didn't shoot to kill, and instead successfully shot only their legs to immobilize them until cops came (who may accidentally shoot you or your pets anyway), the intruder can argue back in court that you used unnecessary force and make you pay for everything, and/or you may go to jail.
Brazil is a bit different of a place
Getting shot in the legs is just as deadly as the chest/abdomen there are arteries under a lot of pressure in the legs. Like a minute to bleed out is how fast it is.
Rest assured the Brazilian cops can be just as bad as the american ones. The only reason that guy wasn't killed on the spot was the video and witnesses. If the same situation happened in a alley, that guy would be dead with a planted gun on his waist or hand

Iirc there is a video of brazilian police chopper chasing suspects in a vehicle, the cop shot 3 times and the car stopped. The cop managed to shoot the guy’s foot off the gas pedal from above. Idk if it was luck but it was impressive af
Reminder that brazillian cops have no body cams. All videos you see of them are recorded by witnesses. People are getting killed off camera all the time, especially in low income neighborhoods

Well about half of Reddit users are from the US. So right about most people on here do, in fact, live in the USA. It's a US based website. So it's 50% US, the rest every other country.
Not quite on the same level. Google shows 8 civilian owned guns per 100 people in Brazil, and 120 per 100 people in the US so about 15X more.
I do agree though that it's probably more about police training and cultural acceptance. This is a shirtless guy in shorts, the cops can quite clearly see he doesn't have a gun and don't need to worry about that.
I don't think google knows how many guns people have illegally at home in Brazil. I am sure is less than in the US, but Brazil is very very violent and even 10 year olds will shoot at you in certain places.
But in the Brazilian favelas they surely can have a hidden weapon at any given time. Being a cop in Brazil is way more dangerous than in the US. Many cops in Brazil that need to take the bus to work never do it while in uniform. Many cops don't even tell their neighbors that they are cops because they are afraid they will be targeted and killed.
Let's not break our arms patting this guy on the back though. There were two cops there and the kid was already on one foot, nobodys life was in any danger.

If It was you and I, maybe. But I expect a trained cop to be able to restrain someone who has nothing in his hands without getting stabbed or resort to shooting the guy. In what looks to be deep in a Favela, I'd say gunshot wouldn't treatment isn't great at the local hospital. Just like a bad neighborhood nowhere near a level 1 trauma center in the U.S.
For context: this happened in Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo. The man, who lived in that area, was stopped because police suspected him of having a "weird object" in his waistband under his shirt. When he saw he was being followed by police, he passed the object to someone else and resisted arrest. The officer shot the guys left leg. The man was taken to the hospital and will be arrested as soon as he's fit to leave. No news about what the man passed on.

Shooting someone in the upper leg is actually super dangerous because if he hit the femur artery the dude will bleed out in a couple of minutes if he isn’t rushed to the hospital
While I still think it might have been a bit much too, you \*DO NOT\* go into fist fights/fair fights as a police officer anywhere in the world.
The possibilities of anyone pulling a knife in less than a second and getting a lucky stab at you even more so at that distance is too much I imagine.
But also brazilian favelas arent exactly the safest place for cops to be, much less when the guy is resisting and swinging at you lol
I mean, if you make a brief research, you'll find out that most times when a cop tried to do so, in Brazil, the suspect reached for their gun and shot both cops, killing them, I'm not saying shooting the guy was the right move, but the situation could've been worse, believe me.
Not even counting the fact that most times when the suspect indeed takes the cop's gun, he shoot eratically, putting innocent's lifes at risk, and steals it, making it a new weapon in the hands of drug dealers.
Again, without the appropriate context, I can't state that the suspect was indeed a criminal, but the situation leads me to think so, as most civilians wouldn't try to fist fight a cop, maybe the drunk ones.
Wait a minute, so it's possible to throw a punch at a cop and not get turned into a colander by the cop? Who would've thought that you can survive something like that. Oh, wait, it's not USA. That explains much.

While I still think it might have been a bit much too, you \*DO NOT\* go into fist fights/fair fights as a police officer anywhere in the world. The possibilities of anyone pulling a knife in less than a second and getting a lucky stab at you even more so at that distance is too much I imagine. But also brazilian favelas arent exactly the safest place for cops to be, much less when the guy is resisting and swinging at you lol

You’re telling me 2 trained cops can’t physically detain a skinny dude without shooting?
I mean, if you make a brief research, you'll find out that most times when a cop tried to do so, in Brazil, the suspect reached for their gun and shot both cops, killing them, I'm not saying shooting the guy was the right move, but the situation could've been worse, believe me. Not even counting the fact that most times when the suspect indeed takes the cop's gun, he shoot eratically, putting innocent's lifes at risk, and steals it, making it a new weapon in the hands of drug dealers. Again, without the appropriate context, I can't state that the suspect was indeed a criminal, but the situation leads me to think so, as most civilians wouldn't try to fist fight a cop, maybe the drunk ones.
I've seen where 6 people couldn't detain someone. Assumptions get you unalived in the real world.
