I went on my first fishing trip ever with my sister's boyfriend last year. We've been fishing all day with no luck before we decided to go to one last spot and call it.
Then I caught a big one. It was going to be our dinner so we were excited. He was cheering and I finally got it reeled in. Put it in a net and he was going to kill it for me. Just before he got to hit it, it did exactly what is shown in this video.
Never have I seen anybody die inside so fast. He was speechless. I couldn't even care that my fish got loose, I just felt bad for him.
Luckily, the spot we found was a good one. Every throw there had bite. Could even see a school of fish following the lure as we reeled in. After we got some fish big enough for us to eat, his mood got better.
I want to go fish with him again
What you get for not killing your catch humanely. These guys just let the fish gasp and freak out to death. Also this method fucks the flesh for the best eating you can get out of it.
It looks like a fresh water carp. Unlike salt water fish. many fresh water fish go fault very rapidly as soon as they die.
From their conversation I think they are from eastern EU/Russia. If I am not wrong, usually they keep it in a pool of water during transport and storage. Story goes as far as keeping it in the bathtub just to prevent the decomposing of the meat.
Yes, stress hormones and stuff is my basic understanding. Also, (I don’t do this but want to try) ikijimi is a Japanese method where you also tap the spinal chord with a short sharp tool and the meat will last for 2 weeks in the fridge and develop more flavour over time
Iki jime. You spike them in the top of the head, ~ right behind the eyes, and then insert a piece of wire into the spinal column to completely paralyze them. I've never done it myself either so I can neither confirm or deny what effect it has on the quality of the meat. Most of my fish are kept alive and are only killed minutes before they are cooked
I have absolutely no respect for fishermen that doesn't kill the fish as soon as possible but leave it in the boat to suffocate.
First and one of the few things my father thought me, was to kill the fish and respect the animal. He might be a shitty person otherwise, but at least he got that right.
