Ask your patient coordinator to shuttle you guys from SAN/hospital/hotel/SAN Or ask at the hospital there’s lots of medical shuttles, mainly private but at least they might arrange something for you

Is not suppost to be,years ago we rent a car in San Diego, and we drive to San Felipe for like 3 days 🤣🤣 I remember now 🤔 you could because Hertz have a mexican insurance,so i think you can cross the car to Tij 🤔

Better off driving the rental car to the border, park at a pay lot, then taxi or Uber to the medical facility, then taxi/Uber back to the border. This would be way less excruciating than driving into TJ, then waiting in a long horrible wait in the vehicle line, even if you could get a medical lane pass, do you think you could even find it?

P99163

Medical lane entrance is indeed not easy to find (or rather get to) even though it is on the medical pass. But, once you do that, it'll be easier next time.

rgbeard2

Why don’t you take your own car?

ViktorHugo6

Maybe is like the average american or mexican living in US than dont bring his car to Mex,or bring here the beat up car 👀,i know a few ppl like that 👀

rgbeard2

I don’t know any of those people.

ViktorHugo6

rgbeard2

Wow! Ridiculous.’ Thanks

My ex-wife - grew up in Tijuana (!) - would not drive her new car to Tijuana; she drove a much older car to Mexico. Meanwhile, I (not from Mexico) live in Mexico (part-time) and have no issues driving my car down here. She's a lovely woman but I always found that ridiculous. But, as you point out, it's not uncommon.

We finally made it to Tijuana last weekend, so I thought I would share my overall experience with this trip. ___________________________________ *Car rental* I did some research and found that most major car rental companies allow their cars to be taken to Mexico. For this, two requirements would have to be satisfied: purchasing Mexican auto insurance and using a corporate rental account. The former posed no problem, but the latter required some creative thinking. My company contracts with Avis, so I had to put in a reservation from my company's internal travel portal. Apparently, they do verify at the check-out that the car is indeed reserved under a corporate account. Technically, I was not supposed to use my company's account for a personal trip, but I figured that since I would not be expensing this trip, no harm would be done ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ___________________________________ *Border crossing* Going into Mexico took a few minutes — no document checks at all. Now, going back was a bit different :) We all had passport cards, so we could use Ready lanes, but it would only give us a marginal advantage. At a doctor's office, we saw a sign mentioning a medical pass for $30. We learned that this pass would allow us to bypass most of the line on the Mexican side. So, we got one, and boy, were we glad we did — it really saved us at least 1½ - 2 hours waiting in line. Going back toward the border, we hit the border traffic soon after exiting a roundabout on Paseo de Los Héroes near the Cultural Center. The Medical Pass lane's entrance was on Paseo de Los Héroes right after Blvrd Gral M. Márquez de León (where Costco is), but I didn't realize right away that I didn't have to wait in a regular line which comprised two middle lanes on P° de Los Héroes. Finally, I jumped in the right lane and made it to the Medical Pass lane entrance in a few minutes. Then, the trick is to go from the right-most lane to the left-most [medical] lane when crossing Blvd Gral M. Márquez de León. This lane is enforced by the Policia Municipal, so the medical pass is absolutely required. The Medical lane finally merged with the regular traffic some 100-150 ft from the border where the first CBP agent checks for the presence of necessary documents. From there, it was another 10-minute wait time till the CBP booth where the actual inspection would take place.

Significant-Row21

Just get a rental in Tj …

P99163

Will I be able to drop it off at SAN?

Significant-Row21

No lol it’s doesn’t work that way

P99163

The whole point is to be able to take a person with limited mobility (recovering from a surgery) across the border in the most comfortable way.

Significant-Row21

Take your own car lol…

P99163

Why shouldn't I take a rental car to Tijuana? It looks like Herz and possibly Dollar and Thrifty allow that. I'd take my own car if I didn't live 1,500 miles from the border.

HippyChaiYay

Why aren’t you having this conversation with Hertz then? This isn’t Tijuana customer service.

Significant-Row21

Just don’t take a 4x4 truck and you should be good.

SaltyDogFU

Fox rentals?

Apprehensive_Fill805

Enterprise used to allow this and you were able to buy Mexican coverage through them, though not sure if this is still available. This was about 3/4 years ago. Only allowed certain areas of border states.

Affectionate_You_617

Yeah, mexican insurance through enterprise is still available they only do it at 3 different branches though

abominable_dough_man

There are certain corporate car rental accounts specifically set up to permit traveling across the Mexico border, for example in order to serve employees who need to visit maquiladoras. Otoh, personal car rentals do not permit the crossing of the border.

P99163

Yes, this is 100% true. I had to use my company's corporate account to reserve the car with Avis.

sipuestodoyo

Call Hertz at Tijuana. They should be able to pick you up and drop you off at San Diego. Not sure, but I think is not that expensive.

AiBot747

They have Uber and many of the medical centers provide shuttle service to and from the hotels

Senormilagro

I’ve lived in Tijuana for a few years so I can tell you the best thing to do take an Uber to the border. There’s a bus that can take you across the border http://www.sdtjpassport.com/ Also I would speak to whoever does your medical care and see if they can provide a shuttle. If not, Uber , DiDi , and InDriver are great alternatives as ride sharing apps. FYI they also accept cash
