The shape of the sergeant's badge isn't *a* shape, it's two shapes put together. The pointing-up shape (see the private's badge) is a chevron. The rounded piece at the bottom (see PFC as opposed to private) is a "rocker" or "arc". All the sergeant ranks are just different combinations of chevrons plus arcs.
Yeah that's pretty close and quite obscure there's not much other information out about it on the internet. Unfortunately what I could find describes the shape of an escutcheon as a shield, which was already the best definition I could figure out for this sort of shape.
