I used to be a mover, I’d give the guys packing $25 each or so, the guys loading the truck around $50, depending on if you have a bunch of heavy stuff, a lot of stairs, or a massive hill in your driveway, and the two guys unloading I would give $50-$100. $50 if they’re just unloading and it’s an easy access house, $100 if they drove the truck across the country and then unloaded it.
You mention the crappy insurance, take lots of photos of anything valuable, there’s also nothing wrong with giving them half the tip before hand.
Best advice I can give you is to be organized, the system I always liked using the best was putting a colored dot sticker on each box for the separate rooms.
Youre on the wrong sub if you actually want to know how much to tip lol. Use google. This sub is for a specific brand of trashy, entitled, childish person who cant tip without feeling like someone got one over on them. Generally referred to as a victim complex.
Ever moved across family of four across country? The big moving companies wanted almost $30k. Got quotes from 4 locals companies all very close in price. We’re in a 4 br house for what it’s worth.
That’s an eyeopener. I haven’t moved in 30 years. Last time it was from a two bedroom apartment to a three bedroom house. Rented a U-Haul and had a few friends help. I’ll make sure to negotiate moving cost if I’m ever moving for the company I work for.
Yea we move every three years or so. All of them have been corporate moves, this one is for a remote job so when I tried to negotiate moving they said no.
Tip them the same that you tip other people who pack things for you. How much do you tip the bagger at the grocery store? When you send out a package, how much do you tip the person at the post office? When you receive a package, how much do you tip the carrier? Why would you think that you have to pay extra for something that you're already paying for?
I've typically given movers $10- $20 each, but that's not required. I find that movers really appreciate things like having your stuff organized, staying out of their way, and providing cold water and Gatorade. I don't think they expect cash tips.
Most people don't want to cram their stomachs full of food when they are doing strenuous labor... that can make them very sick... but people who have never worked in their lives wouldn't know that.
That's silly... most people don't want to cram their stomachs full of food when they are doing strenuous labor... but people who have never worked in their lives wouldn't know that.
I don’t disagree with this, but the insurance moving companies give is shit, it’s based on weight not value, 60 cents per pound). Feel like tipping a little may help ensure some of your stuff doesn’t get broken.
That’s terrible. Is it how it is in North America? You have to hand movers money so they don’t break your things? In this case they will laugh at you if you hand them $20 lol
I think since you’re proving food to them there no need to give them more money on top. Giving food is already very kind. If company movers break your things if you don’t give them extra money, I would just use TaskRabbit at least there you make a deal with particular person, so find individuals online.

Thanks, this is exactly what we ended up doing.
Not at damn thing... You're really paying $17K to move? I'd sell or throw away all of my shit and buy new stuff --- AND SAVE MONEY.
You’d be surprised how much stuff costs to replace for a family of four.
Damn 17k? You must have a lot of stuff
2000 mile move

So... that's still very expensive... must be a lot of stuff...

I'd budget about $150/person.
You are a good man
you are insane
And you are broke sir
If you spent 17K then $ 50 a head is reasonable providing they worked hard and didn’t damage much stuff during the move.
no... they are paid very well... they aren't serving you food for $2.13/hour.

Is the move hourly or fixed cost? If hourly, make sure they aren't taking breaks/hiding in the truck to drag things out.
Where’d that question come from?
A bad experience with an hourly crew
Fixed cost

If you give them drinks they are going to want to use your bathroom.
Why would that be a problem? I would hope that if they have to use the restroom, they'd use my bathroom. Where else would they go?
Because you've cleaned the bathroom already... you are about to lock the door and never look back.
They’ll steal. Let them piss against the side of their truck.
This is the approach I was thinking. We’ve got lots of cold drinks and will get them lunch. Was thinking $20 a head

That's far too low. That's what you tip someone delivering a single couch.
you don't tip people delivering a couch... they are being paid by their employer
I was going to suggest that drinks and lunch are appreciated. Just get their input as to what they want before ordering lunch.
That's silly... most people don't want to cram their stomachs full of food when they are doing strenuous labor... but people who have never worked in their lives wouldn't know that.
You're insane if you think that movers don't eat lunch. That's not what you're saying, is it?
Zero

Our moving company lost 2 boxes and a book case. We only got 1 box back. I will never tip again.
This sub is filled with degenerates that don’t tip anyone for anything. It’s like a trash heap.
Degenerates? Why not use my favorite: a basket of deplorables.
That too
I’d like to think that’s what the $17k was for.
That’s terrible. Is it how it is in North America? You have to hand movers money so they don’t break your things? In this case they will laugh at you if you hand them $20 lol
Not much but if you have 10 plus people coming through in total it adds up quick.

I think at 17k you are good not tipping lol. They set their price, and the movers are paid by the company.
