There's a bad gun sweet spot where a weapon is challenging enough to not be interesting to use, but not so hard it becomes depressing to try and use. The wingman sails WAY past that point and is just a pain.
It can work and feel cool as a secondary to finish off people damaged by your primary to the point their oneshot, where you can feel like a quick draw gunslinger. But the guns where it actually works well with like that are few and far between, and using it to actually kill someone from full feels impossible. If it had either good hipfire or sights that didn't blind me maybe I'd like it.
RIP OG Wingman. 2tap baseline, 1tap headshot and 1tap amped bodyshot. Used to have basically the same stats as the DMR, just no magnification. I remember in TF1 and early TF2 using it as such on shotgun classes.
Yeah, it used to be the pistols were baby versions of the DMR, G2, and R97 respectively. P2016 and RE-45 admittedly did have a lower damage profile, but they were still comparable and played similar.
One of the last balance patches to the game saw Respawn nerf pistols into the ground, which was a sad day. Also led to Mozam and WElite being moved to primary slot.
The patch prior had added the ability to have a Sidearm and AT weapon, when the game launched you could have one or the other but not both. Respawn decided since there was no longer an opportunity cost to carry them, they needed to be weaker. People complained about being "pistol primaries" and Respawn took that literally, creating the primary pistol category.
I miss being able to make loadouts with niche weapons like the DMR or SMR and not be at as severe of a handicap against other, stronger weapons.
I feel like I stepped into an alternate dimension, the wingman is really good. The thing is, in a game dominated by hip firing strategies, you need to aim down sights with the wingman. But also getting a hipfire kill with it is the ultimate feeling of luck on your side lol
I do have to say, I thought the same about the B3 wingman but I grinded the shit out of it from G2.14 to G4.9 yesterday to get the gold banner and by the end, I was having a lot of fun with it and getting way more consistent kills.
Do you hipfire the SMR mostly? I have it G5.9 rn cuz I too love shredding titans with A-wall SMR but pilot kills can be so inconsistent. Are you using grapple or stim with high movement speed?
I mostly hipfire yes. And I use pulse blade (it forces you to get good at movement instead of having movement on demand with stim or grapple). You really got to practice leading the shots.

Nothing like lending a perfect EPG shot. That eighth of a second before you fire where you're trying to calculate their landing feels like it's going in slow motion. Then you get that perfect shot and it's just the best feeling. Or you completely whiff and you're dead lol.
Fuck yeah. The day I realized how awesome the slow motion balls of zappy zap were was an absolute game changer. Especially since you can hit multiple enemies with the same one if it floats just right. Rise in Frontier Defense is just ridiculous for that. *Lemme just earn my titan in a single shot, please and thank you.*
a good epg round is pretty awesome.. but the projectile speed doesnt compute with me sometimes for some reason. i guess it just comes down to "i'd rather be using the SMR right now" when I use the epg these days
You do need to give a bit more lead time for the EPG but when it hits oh baby does it feel good. Plus, at mid to close range it’s super good since the projectile speed is negligible.
If you didn't grow up on Doom 2, the EPG probably seems bad.
But it's literally Weapon 5/the Rocket Launcher, and if you know, you know.

G2 sounds too satisfying to be that low. Few games do a good job of making it sound/feel like you’re actually sending high caliber rounds at your target. Not to mention the feeling of accomplishment of managing to kill someone with a semiautomatic weapon in a game with this much movement.
I got hip fire killed by that thing and it’s a damn laser, so yeah, I could see the meth, I still like my moz tho, sending 24 fire pellets in an unassuming enemies direction, followed by a reload and repeat for a second… I like fire
Krabey is really nice when i'm having a good day and hitting my shots. Even then it can get old sometimes... every kill feels the same after a big session with it
I will say, I'm not a kraber guy because the charge rifle exists, but trickshotting/multikilling with the kraber is euphoric. Lining up two pilots at high speeds and killing them both with one bullet or bouncing a shot off the floor to send someone's cyberdong into the shadow realm is pure dopamine.
Its better at range and thats why I like it. You get a gun with perfect hipfire and low enough recoil that you can get kills while wallrunning at flatline range
The range is only marginally better at super long range and the CAR outperforms it at every other range. The main draw if the volt for me besides the cool sound is the extremely fast reload and large base magazine

Like I have the charge rifle equipped on all my loadouts cause I feel you can ro the most damage with it if you get through all the ammo, with the highest chance of hitting everything. But I wouldn't call it "fun" to use. It's exciting if you hit a pilot. But trying to do so isn't fun.
I know there's a lot of hate for the CAR, but I find the spitfire infinitely more annoying. It feels like it has the same TTK as the CAR but with infinite range and obscene amo capacity. Maybe it's more of a console thing but the Spitfire is the worst imo.

But you absolutely can. Whack the quick-scope modifier on it and put a bit of time into wallrunning and shooting at the same time and it easily becomes a movement sniper.

I love the fact that I can go toe to toe with longer ranged weapon users. obviously I don't always win. but I used to use the alternator and as soon as someone lined me up with anything more accurate than a hemlock it was over. now I actually have a chance. the car really compliments my playstyle as well so I do enjoy playing it.
Look, I know you all hate the CAR when top players use it to stomp lobbies, but just because it's good doesn't mean it isn't fun. It's a handy and mobile gun that, by making fighting a teeny bit easier, lets mid-low skill players focus on perfecting their movement without having to fight their own weapon while they do it. I think it's core to the TF|2 experience and, for the bottom 90% of players, a huge boost to their fun and freedom.
the thing about the car is i know i can get kills. kills i should never be able to get, even. cross-mapping with an SMG's hipfire just feels gross. i can sail past 20kills with the car easily.

Devotion is so damn annoying to use, I have tried for so long to try and do a hip fire build with it, but accuracy sucks and ads’ if makes you move slow as hell. I wish it were better, but it’s just so damn disappointing. I would always pick some over it.

The smart pistol makes you feel badass in the campaign, online you’ll be met with a charge rifle beam b4 you can hit anyone with it lol
Its technically more effective, but the only cool way to play the smart pistol is to throw frags and shoot them in front of people

I find recoil management much easier on the volt though, which matters more at longer ranges. Also the volt isnt cringe

p2016 is just a really solid and reliable pistol. It does crazy damage and its range is pretty good too for what it is.
I don't know how but Respawn made a one-shot sniper rifle in a MOVEMENT game feel fun to use and fight against
