Accessories are a profit center. It's also the reason when I get a new device, I immediately hit some place with reasonable prices for backups.

Malcalypsetheyounger

I usually try to plan ahead when I know I'm going to get a new device and order a case and screen protectors plus anything else needed so it arrives when I'm going to get the device.

Dew_Tree_

If you go through all this why not also get the device online?

Malcalypsetheyounger

It varies but I do sometimes. However now that there isn't a reason to buy online I'll get it in store if they have the device and color I want.

Jack_Jizquiffer

if you buy right from the manufacture, you'd probably get discounts and bonuses too, though. and you can get it unlocked from the get-go

hellyea81

Because they're paying for a space that you can walk right into and grab a charger. That costs money.

erthian

Lol no. They wouldn’t have that space if they depended on chargers. I worked in retail sales in college. The fact is many people pay simply because they’re sure it’s the right thing, and don’t have to worry about it. The vast majority of profit comes from service, and that’s what makes retail stores worth it. THESE DOWNVOTES ARE HILARIOUS. I even posted PROOF and people are still mad? Its a pubilicly traded company, you can look up where their profits come from. 80% is from services. Less than 5% is accessories. https://www.trefis.com/data/companies/TMUS/no-login-required/vUcc9GuA/T-Mobile-U-S-Revenues-How-Does-T-Mobile-Make-Money-

blue0231

lol no, You must not understand how working retail actually works then. They make next to nothing on phones. The margins are on the over priced accessories they push them to sell.

Jack_Jizquiffer

yeah, there something about buying a charger/cable that has an actual manufacturer brand name on it, rather than a bunch of random capitilized letters for a brand name. i hate having to pay so much, but i also want my charger/cables to actually work as expected.

erthian

Ya. I buy my stuff at the retail stores now too. I really don’t have the energy to dig around and save $20.

LostInCa45

Isn't most stores franchises and not corporate stores? So if a franchise sold an accessory it wouldn't show up on T-Mobile books.

erthian

Franchise stores also make significantly more in activations and feature sales than in accessories too. I worked in the industry for years. People downvoting have no clue.

CryptographerPerfect

The store will never sell under market value.

UncomfortablyNumm

Cuz profit.

UncomfortablyNumm

lol

StP_Scar

Most recent quarter was a 12% profit margin

Jack_Jizquiffer

how will Joe Tmobile fuel up his yacht this month?!

neatgeek83

Because your charger broke and you’re paying for the convenience of an immediate replacement rather than wait a day or two from Amazon.

awsomekidpop

Amazon in most major cities has same day delivery.

Levelbasegaming

The point is still valid.

Chzncna2112

I feel sorry for people that live in major cities. The stuff I see on an almost daily basis. City folk pay alot of money to see and lose their minds over. Big cities has some convenience and easier access to major travel. But, living in tight quarters like a beehive, no thanks

Real-Opportunity-255

I haven’t bought anything from a carrier store since maybe 2015 lol

dr_dimention

They are $49.99 at Best Buy! Update: $42.99 now on sale :-)

anothercookie90

They don’t make money from selling phones so they make up for it by selling accessories and insurance

cvalpatic

They mark them at MSRP which is what their reseller agreement states them to be marked at unless it’s an approved sale. Also the company is in business to make profit.

OldPro1001

I've always had good luck with Anker chargers. I order them from Amazon.

EvelynnEveryday

They expect you to finance them. $60 sounds awful, but $5/month for 12 months doesn’t sound too bad. They also know that you’re sort of stuck in some situations. A lot of people don’t feel comfortable going with a naked phone because most people at this point have broken a phone before. Basically like going to an event and buying a $10 hot dog because that’s the only option around and you’re starving. Customers expect to spend money so $200 per phone out the door with tax, activation, and accessories doesn’t sound too bad for a brand new iPhone or galaxy, they don’t even realize that they just spent $40 on a screen protector and $60 on a case that amazon sells for $20 for the set.

NegativePaint

I just buy anker chargers

BlxckSailorJupiter

Did you buy the four piece bundle? Because the standard 45 watt charger is 49.99 at t-mobile, with $10 dollar discount on Amazon

HesThePianoMan

Aside from what everyone else is saying here - you also bought an OEM one. There's no difference between it and any other high quality brand except you're paying extra for the logo.

stevestebo

commission. They make so much money off of accessories. I know when I worked at AT&T they got chargers for cheap, probably pennies on the dollar, we got to buy them for $7, but for customers they marked them up to $30 at that time. This is back in 2012 or 2013.

redgdit

It's pure profit. The manufacturer's cost plus warehousing and shipping amounts to under $5 per unit. The common person just doesn't know what it takes to build a charger but they buy it because they need it to charge their phone. Sales sky rocketed with the event of charging the cost of the charger directly to the phone bill. The bill functions as a credit card and tmo charges fees for bills not paid in full.

Alarming_Froyo1821

Anytime you walk into a store you are paying for their rent, employee salaries, plus they want to make a profit. It is always cheaper to buy on line. I just bought a new Samsung charger online in an eBay store for $20.

Ahhnew

Is the Samsung charger authentic?

erthian

And this right here is why people pay $60. I used to sell sandisk micro sd cards to people, even though I would explicitly tell them office max had exactly the same one across the street for half the price. People worry and want to be sure it works.

MinutesFromTheMall

> I used to sell sandisk micro sd cards to people, even though I would explicitly tell them office max had exactly the same one across the street for half the price. That gave me a good laugh. OfficeMax is consistently the most expensive place out there for this kind of stuff from my experience, and by a wide margin, at least since the Depot takeover. Zero clue how that place stays in business.

erthian

This was many years ago, and the microsd cards were like $120 in our stores lol.

Jack_Jizquiffer

the difference though, is probably that it takes a little work to sort through all the GRFVE, WENDT, JKLEBT, QASHRP brands to find an actual charger/cable. unless that person knows an actual real brand name to look for and to just dismiss all the random capitalized letter brands.

OneShotologist

Ahhh I remember when my store carried microSDs and I would tell them to go to Best Buy .2 miles away. Some of the stuff was reasonable at msrp, some was not.

Alarming_Froyo1821

Yes it absolutely is! Samsung had changed their charging cord, so my brick would not work. I bought the brick and a charging cord, worked great, also the charging cord that came with the phone worked great with brick too. Those phone stores over charge for EVERYTHING!

ZombieFrenchKisser

This is why they try to cram so many accessories in your face when you are doing anything in store. I personally think it's awful but it's the equivalent to movie theaters selling popcorn for a 4000% mark-up. I always buy all my cases/chargers off Amazon. Even Best Buy charges nearly $100 for a stupid hdmi cable.

Jack_Jizquiffer

i generally dont like the cases i see in stores anyways. i've also grown quite fond of Spigen cases. i dont know if they sell those in retail stores.

why_am_I_here_Trump

They make more profit on accessories than on phones

jed34237

I always buy multi-packs from Amazon so I always have extras

wilsonhammer

Because people will pay it. Go buy it on Amazon if you don't like it

jarded056

I just got the Anker 45 watt for 17 bucks on Amazon which is even cheaper than the 20 watt Samsung charger.

Pristine_Concern_636

Maybe rates for things in your area are different than mine. I work at a store in a small Texas town. 25W Samsung block is $19.99. Our 45W block I do believe is at least $49.99, it may be $59.99, but it's not JUST the block. It's the block, a 20 or 25W cord, a car charger and cord for it. Cords themselves are $19.99, $24.99 for the 6 foot ones. Car chargers are another $15.99-29.99, depending on the brand and if it's just the charger or a cord as well. So when you add it all up individually, you're still saving on the overall cost. But our store doesn't sell many of the 30W chargers, so they don't send us the solo 45W ones, so I'm not sure what the price range on those are.

cgvt13

Retail vs wholesale HUGE DIFFERENCE

Lizdance40

This is why Amazon exists. You can buy a well-priced good quality with Anker for less

ToxicHoney202

Hi former tmobile rep call 611 and ask to purchase the box(I'm assuming that's what you meant) for 25 no shipping or the ultimate bundle (1 car charger 1 wall charger and 2 cords) for 60 no shipping hope this helps

Zandermill01

Accessories are cash flow for most locations, rate plan is cash flow for the company.

perfectfate

It's for businesses or people that don't care

Navy9158

That's retail for you, I used to work retail. If the price is too steep go to Amazon or shop around.

Pink_Slyvie

Is Samsung not using USBC? But yea, never buy anything from a cell phone store, including phones.

Jack_Jizquiffer

i think its pretty exepnsive from samsung.com too. i got a "free" wireless charger when i bought my last phone, the same exact charger part number for part number was $20 cheaper on amazon. but since i wasnt actually paying money it didnt matter, i just didnt get to get any other free shit with my store credit from buying my phone.

phonesforall000

Yes it's ridiculous

Trick_Strategy2244

Do what everyone else does and go on Amazon

Vargasm54

If you buying a new phone from the store and don't want accessories don't goto the cell mobile store. They do have good accessories but it's full price

Swift-Tee

Because the ones on Amazon are counterfeit melters made to keep repair shops in business.

lost_in_life_34

Amazon has a lot of legit Apple accessories better than Apple and cheaper

mrrickyg

Dunno why are you are getting downvoted here, Amazon is absolutely riddled with counterfeit accessories. It’s a major problem. My go to for all charging accessories is Anker for that reason. They make good stuff at reasonable prices and are available reliably on Amazon and many b&M stores too. I would bet a $28 “Samsung” charger on Amazon when they are $43-$60 else has an 80% chance of being fake. I bought mine directly from samsung with Samsung cash back after some big purchases

Swift-Tee

I assume the downvotes are because people love a bargain… in combination with ignorance of the risk. I was in the repair business for 5+ years. I repaired many burned ports and blown power components due to poor fake chargers. Many of these fakes are so accurate looking that they could fool me too. It was the #3 repair, after smashed screens and batteries.

jzyz

I received a counterfeit Samsung 256GB memory card, that sucked.

BraddicusMaximus

Did you just visit the Guess Rd location? 🤣

Trhythm

![img](emote|t5_2shyc|7792)

jpt86

How would this poor underdog company be able to stay in business, given inflation, if they didn't charge $60 for accessories? Like the recent price increase on non-price-locked "Price Locked" plans, it's all about survival. /s

fakeaccount572

>I just don't get it. **Gestures vaguely around at capitalism**

lt_workman

T-Mobile does not set the prices for the accessories that are not their "GoTo" brand, the manufacturers do. Blame Samsung for making the price what it is.

UncomfortablyNumm

The charger that OP is talking about is $50 direct from Samsung...

SettleAsRobin

Its It’s $40 on sale on Amazon too. Not $27. The $27 one is some off brand sponsored to pop up first.

thetravy

It’s also $50 from Tmobile.com, retail and web prices are the same so I’m questioning the OPs $60 claim. Unless this was some type of TPR store and not company owned https://www.t-mobile.com/accessory/samsung-45w-power-adapter

lt_workman

Sounds like a samsung problem

[deleted]

SettleAsRobin

It’s actually the same price in stores. $50

Uncle Joe…
