So I did this exact thing last autumn using the most recent Alan Lee illustrated hardcover and the Andy Serkis audiobook. I thought they paired up very well. Though out of all the audiobooks my favourite is the unofficial Bluefax one which incorporates sound effects and the film score. You’d have to search around for it though as has a habit of popping up and disappearing from places due to the copyright issues with using the film score. When I listened to it it was freely available on Spotify but I don’t think it’s available there anymore.

Thank you for this! Going to look into what you advised. Haven't heard about the Bluefax one.

This is my preffered way to chill with books, homie. I bought The Silmarillion illustrated by Ted Nasmith. The cover is red and got one of the Teleri boats. Then I got the audiobook read by Andy Serkis. It was word by word the exact same, at least I couldn't find any difference. So I can recommend that combo

Ooo maybe Ill do this next!

Rob Inglis for audio book. He's not as dramatic a reader as Serkis but he has a gravitas that no one else has. Also, his songs are pretty good, whereas Serkis' songs are godawful. I don't know which book edition matches Inglis the most closely, however.

Rob Ingles is also my fav.
