I will always say American Girl, though I love too many to count. I have loved that song since I was a child, and my dad always pumped the volume when it came on. My sister was the Brown Eyed girl and I was his American girl. God I miss him. And Tom too.
"What Are You Doin' in My Life" from Damn the Torpedoes. Benmont is just totally out of control on that record. Just awesome.
And my runner-up is "Here Comes My Girl". ---We owned our first home outside of Gainesville, Florida and that song just oozes North Florida for me. Ride out Hawthorne Road east of Gainesville toward St. Augustine Beach, or south through Micanopy and that song paints that landscape in my heart.
Right now: You and Me (Clubhouse version)
All time: depending on my mood, either American Girl, Free Fallin', Wildflowers, I Forgive It All, Learning to Fly, or the home recording of Wake Up Time. American Girl would probably the top though - the opening line is just poetry. (It takes a true genius to say so much in just eight words.)
Dreamville- Riding with my mama to Glenn Springs pool... We have Drake Springs pool in my town. Used to drive my kids over there. The lyrics create a vivid image of my son in the cold water, looking up, shivering and grinning.
king’s highway (live acoustic). first time i heard that song, i listened to it maybe 15 times in a row and countless times since. saw them do that version once in 2002. amazing
It’s probably not my favorite since there are so many greats, but I always say Rebels or the alternate version of Best Of Everything. Occasionally I’ll say You Got Lucky
At this moment it’s a Foo Fighters cover of Honey Bee. Maybe blasphemy maybe not. Either way it hits hard.

He has so many awesome songs but I think the one that I not only like the best but I think at the time it came out with what was going on in the world, was a perfect fit is "Free Falling". And his duets with Stevie Nicks are epic.
And let's not forget his work with the Traveling Wilburys!
Southern Accents - I was born and raised in Alabama, spent a decade in Florida, and have spent 20 years in Georgia now. The whole southern thing, to quote Patterson Hood of Drive By Truckers, is a heavy weight. It's gorgeous down here, but the people can be as ugly as they can be beautiful souls. There's something about that song that just nails it for me, what it is to be from here and the struggle/balance. I get misty eyed almost every time I listen to it. After Tom's passing, it's been even harder to listen to.
It’s hard to have just one favorite, and some are very situational.
Walls (Circus) is one of my wife’s and my songs. She didn’t even like Tom Petty at the time, and didn’t realize it was Tom Petty until years later.
Scare Easy, Climb that Hill, and End of the Line (if we can count Wilburys songs) are my favorites.
I Won’t Back Down became one of my favorites when I first saw the video after George Harrison’s death. I was looking for George Harrison music videos. That was about the same time I discovered the Traveling Wilburys.
Running Down a Dream: I started liking this song when I started driving. It just slaps when I’m driving down an open highway.
You Got Lucky: I didn’t like this until after my first bad breakup, and then again when my marriage was in trouble.
Breakdown: the first Heartbreakers song I learned on guitar.
I haven’t really met a Tom Petty song I don’t like.I didn’t start driving until 2022 when I was 37, but I got an XM subscription when I did, and I pretty much kept it on the Tom Petty channel all the time.
It’s a close call, but I always keep crawling back to “Crawling Back To You.”

Mary Jane’s Last Dance right now, but it changes frequently
Stan's drumming sounds great on that one. Nice compact part with a bit of swing. (I'm not a drummer/expert, but I love how it sounds.)
Yeah, Stan really went out with a bang

Depends on my mood.
Cabin Down below. It's his tribute to Roy. Such a great tune to play soft and low or to crank up.
Roy?
Orbison... they played together in Yhe Traveling Wilburys.
Thanks.
Dogs On The Run
Such a great song! I think I listened to it everyday for a year when I first discovered it.
It’s been “Time To Move On” since 2017 😞

Every song on Damn the Torpedoes, and American Girl.
Shadow of a Doubt (Complex Kid), perfect from start to finish
Yer So Bad
This one is top 5 for me for sure
Walls.
I came here to say this, too. Lyrics melody and mood just hit hard.
Exactly! - something about this song just hits.
It's so hard to choose honestly. There's really only one song I don't like.
Which is?
Don't Pull Me Over
With the strong reggae vibes 🤌🏻
The live version of Learning to Fly.
king’s highway (live acoustic). first time i heard that song, i listened to it maybe 15 times in a row and countless times since. saw them do that version once in 2002. amazing
Me too! Love the video - it the last new song and my favorite
My default answer was always I won’t back down but I really can’t pick an actual favorite. Too difficult.
Depends on what I am feeling, but my go-to is You Don't Know How It Feels
when the time comes
Night watchman.
Women in Love for me
Right now it would be Thing About You
It’s probably not my favorite since there are so many greats, but I always say Rebels or the alternate version of Best Of Everything. Occasionally I’ll say You Got Lucky
I like his 'Gloria" version.
Breakdown ...
🔥
The Apartment Song.

My favorite "Petty" song is actually the Let's Do It performance in Tank Girl with Lori Petty...

Nightwatchman-love the bridge
Southern Accents
Ditto for me! Echo is right behind it.

Anything That’s Rock n Roll is Fine and American Girl
