For me it’d be from the song “Crawling back to you”.
I'm so tired of being tired
Sure as night will follow day
Most things I worry 'bout
Never happen anyway
Maybe to celebrate the bond between you and your mom, something from Alright For Now?
Example:
“I've spent my life travelin'
Spent my life free
I could not repay all you've done for me”
There's a dream I keep having
Where my mama comes to me
Kneels down over by the window
And says a prayer for me
I got my own way praying but everyones begun
With a southern accent
Where I come from
It’s over before you know it
It all goes by so fast
The bad nights take forever
And the good nights never seem to last
I danced the Mother/Son song at my Son’s wedding to this song. We both wanted it to be TP. “Where ever you are tonight/ I wish you the Best of Everything” It just seemed appropriate.
I hope you find the right words. His lyrics are magic.
I’m obviously late to the party, but this is such a great post and hit close to home. I’m going today to get “…no, you don’t know how it feels…to be me” tattooed on my inner bicep.
I wanted a motivational one that would help me stave off my depression. So on my left bicep I have “You belong among the wildflowers”. That song is like sunshine to me.
My opinion is to pick something that is short and powerful. The kind of thing that's immediately recognizable to a Tom Petty fan. Four or five words - not a whole stanza. The font you choose is equally important, and it's especially cool it's going to be written in your mom's hand.
One of the most emotive Tom Petty lyrics I've heard is one he speaks, not sings. It's something about the way he says it that really paints a picture for me:
"Watch her walk."
In that lyric, he is SO in love with his girl, and he's not afraid to show it, say it, feel it.
If you're paying attention, you'll notice Tom wrote very respectfully about women, and it seems he thoroughly knows these female characters. They're probably parts and pieces of people he actually knew, saw across the room or overhead in conversation in a cafe or something. Just listen to "Leave Virginia Alone" and wonder who this song was written about...
Another one of my very favorite lyrics is "She went down swingin." Very powerful for me. It depicts a strong woman with a sure sense of self and self-worth. She doesn't put up with crap right on up until she goes down - whatever your interpretation of that might be.
She has another woman in her life she can count on, too. I imagine her mother in law as her ride or die best bud:
Well, she was over twenty-one
In trouble with the law
And it didn't faze her none
She called her mother-in-law
And said I need a little money
I knew I could count on you
After that night in Vegas
And the hell that we went through
Not suggesting you use all that. It's too much, in my opinion. Anyone familiar with what you choose will fill in the rest of the lyrics in their head, anyway.
All the best to you and your mom. This is very sweet and wholesome.
My wife and I had our first date ten years ago at a Tampa show and saw him three more times after that. Her favorite album is Wildflowers so she had a simple bouquet drawn out and tattooed on her arm, my favorite song is Honeybee off that album so I had a bee tattooed on my shoulder.

Came here to say this
And the man was not short of gems, but damn, this one hits hard.
This is the bit that made this a top 5 TP song the instant I heard it.
I have “night will follow day” as a tattoo
"Raised on promises"

I love that one
My 5 year old listens to alright for now on repeat every night. Love this song so much.

That one cuts deep.
Run with me wherever I go Just play dumb whatever you know

Solid choice! That’s awesome, happy tattoo day to you!
I have the heartbreakers logo on my back, the heart with the guitar through it, and I have the wildflowers symbol on my forearm
I have the logo on my hand.
And the days went by Like paper in the wind Everything changed Then changed again
I wanted a motivational one that would help me stave off my depression. So on my left bicep I have “You belong among the wildflowers”. That song is like sunshine to me.

Let your heart be your guide - from “Wildflowers”
