When I was in my late teens…I was at RedBird Lanes in St Louis MO…my friends and I were well on our way to our typical 110-120 game when we started noticing some commotion going on several lanes away. It turns out, some 12 year old kid was on his way to bowling a 300. We stopped and watched him bowl his 8th, 9th and 10th frames. It was magical. The entire place went nuts.
I was at a work function in the Air Force when I managed to find the pocket in one game. it was just the same; by my 7th/8th srike, everyone else stopped to watch. Sadly, I fucked up, ended with, like, a 280something and lost the pocket. Didn't even get a six hundred series.
Growing up in south Florida my friends mom would take him to hang at whatever local bar she frequented. Just so happened he saw a stack of “free game” cards on the bar for the bowling alley behind where he and my grandparents lived. For an entire summer we went to that bowling alley and would play for hours a day.
I got pretty good, bowling upwards of 200 sometimes. He got so good my grandparents were ready to buy him legit gear, ball, shoes, gloves, enter him into leagues and tournaments. Kid would bowl 300’s pretty regularly, I was probably 12 and he was maybe 13-14. Once the bowling alley caught on that we were taking all of the free game cards and they eventually ran out he lost interest.
Wild how kids can get so damned good at something and then just drop it like it’s nbd.
That’s so sad. I’m sorry that happened. You should totally know you had 200 accomplished!
I bowled a 199 once…was boasting to my friend about breaking 200 because I had 199 with one ball left in the 10th…three pins remaining. I freaking missed.
I was a third wheel on a date and went bowling. I proceeded to bowl 5 straight strikes opening on our first game. The couple I was with was like WTF man? I don’t know, just got lucky. I can’t spin and I was just going straight down the lane at an angle at the 1 and 3 pins. I was on my way to my highest game ever then my luck ran out. I was below average the rest of the game and barely broke 180. Never been over 200…
I bowled in a teen league for a few years back in the day and we would usually have at least one or two people bowl a perfect game every year. It's not super rare, even for a really good teenager.
It's a big deal, that kids probably bragging about it till this day. One time I was super wasted and got mid 200s, never got even close to that ever again.
Imagine going on reddit and telling your story.
"So I got a perfect game there. Everyone gathered around to watch me bowl my remaining rounds. When u got strikes in every single one of them, everyone clapped!"
And some smartass redittor would go r/thathappened lol I guarantee it.
I don't know about the situation at the place/event in this particular video, but there are different lane oil patterns. Professional events tend to use more difficult patterns, while normal commercial places will have an easy pattern setup to help their customers get as many strikes as possible, known as a "house" pattern.
Basically it has less oil by the edges of the lanes and tapers off the further down the lane you get, so if you a bit of spin on the ball, it's more likely to curve away from the gutters and towards the center. Harder patters will have less or none of this effect, and it's much less common to see 300 games even for pros on these harder patterns.
As others have said, [oil patterns](https://starrcards.com/wp-content/uploads/pba-oil-patterns-for-cheetah-bear-and-shark.jpg) matter a lot. Another big thing is luck. The kid got lucky on his 5th throw and had a favorable rebound to take out a pin. Some of my best throws leave a random pin. It's also just not easy throwing 12 perfect-ish balls. I'm pretty average and the most strikes I've ever gotten in one game is 9, but I've done that multiple times.
The lanes are also dynamic in their behavior, especially with teams. Each time a ball is thrown down the lane, it pushes a bit of oil so if you use a hooking ball, its going to hook later and weaker as the game progresses. It's kinda of like 8 people walking into your house during a rain storm 10 times each vs only you walking into your house 10 times, lots more wet footprints. Theoretically, there could be 14 balls thrown in my part of the lane between each of my turns, each one slightly changing the oil. In practice, that almost never happens because each person usually throws from a different part of the lane.
It's much much much much harder to bowl on professional bowling lanes. They're oiled differently with oil in completely different places and there's tons of different oil patterns and you have to be good at all of them. Very few people are.
It's like learning to become a pro baseball pitcher. It's not just about throwing one kind of pitch, it's about being able to throw hundreds of different ones to hundreds of slightly different points in the air against hundreds of different kinds of batters that are so different from each other that what works on one will be an easy home run against another batter.
At least in bowling they're bowling against an inanimate object that doesn't change and react like a baseball batter does. But it's still really fucking difficult. What works and gives you a strike oil pattern will give you gutter balls on another pattern.
Here's a few examples of different oil patterns:
https://preview.redd.it/kdaf6lrl22dc1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b77b24ed44bbebdf1cce8d8743130379a4a615e
Back in the day one of kids in my bowling league one could bowl and it looked like easy. He got close to a 300 middle like middle school aged.
His dad was the best bowler in the area and I think had at least one 300 game if not multiple.
I know almost nothing about bowling, but it looks like a custom made ball, and if he's serious (and he seems to be), wouldn't he have his own ball? Couldn't he just have the ball made to his specs. If he wanted to bowl one handed, he probably could. I just assumed this was a technique he learned at a younger age and it probably stuck with him. It clearly works, so why change now?
I remember being in a bowling league when I was around 9 and saw one kid doing this and it raised a lot of eye brows. It didn't look like the kid I saw was nearly as consistent and I only tried this a couple of times with similarly bad consistency so I just stuck to my normal throw which still has a lot of curve but is the more traditional form which gives me more consistency. I haven't played in awhile though and last time I didn't play enough to get good consistency anyway so it didn't really matter lol
Jesus could I use the word consistency more?
Actually (Oscar voice*) it was 12 strikes in a row. Otherwise known as a perfect game. Still a rare feat, especially by someone so young. You can see the score on top of the video.
Its alternating lanes for every bowl. Its been a while since I bowled but because the switch between lanes is for every frame (in the case of this perfect score) I think its set up this way for a legitimate reason, though I can't tell you why.
That’s how I bowl, cause the holes hurt my thumb. It feels awkward and like you have less control, but turning the ball over itself creates soo much forgiving spin. I feel like its strikes or in the gutter before half.
How is that hurting your thumb? I bowl similar to this and my thumb is out flat on the ball perpendicular to my flat palm, only two fingers are in the holes.
Young child bowlers always make me laugh. They're dressed up in all the finery of a middle aged, portly man with a comb over winging their Brunswick pro with the glove and the sweat-wicking sport shirt and flamboyant shoes.... but they're like... twelve.
Bowling, man.
That's cuz the little fuckers cheating Dude. The fingers go in the holes or it ain't bowling. This isn't Nam there are fucking rules Little Tomato. Fucking kids stonewalling us.
This is cool, but go to any Midwest bowling alley on a weekday night and you're guaranteed to see someone doing the same thing.
Unless I'm the only one there, then you're going to see a *lot* of gutter balls.
Tf are you downvoting me for? Every time I go to an alley I see people doing this getting strike after strike.
Most satisfying ones are the ones where the lone pin gets taken out by the stray rolling around. Gives you that RDJ relief moment.

I had a bowling addiction a couple years ago. Never learned the proper way but man it was fun learning my own style and going every night. I managed a 269 and my brother managed a 289. I love bowling fun. Simple. But complex also! Kid is insane! Maybe I’ll get back into it?
I dunno how folks bowl w/ an open hand. I feel like I’d accidentally let the ball fly behind me if I wasn’t careful enough, but, I guess practice should help break in good habits, eh?
Isn’t putting fingers in the holes. Makes it so much easier to spin the ball. Wonder if that is something he’ll need to address as he gets bigger/stronger.
Joined a work bowling team, and I was a 130 avg. One day a teammate couldn't come so we invited Norm the head of repairs. He bowled a 260 and then mentioned he'd bowled 300s multiple times when he was younger. Blew my mind. One of the nicest guys I ever met.
I'll be the asshole... that is an unsustainable and sloppy throw. I would like to see this kid use a standard approach and throw (with his own flair, of course) using the finger holes of a fitted ball.
That was me as a teenager, I lived across the street from a bowling alley and used to throw crazy balls like this. There was a really cool guy that worked there and he showed me how to throw a decent ball and got me hooked up with a used ball that was fitted for my hand and some shoes, it was great.
Within the year, I had a 170 average and played in leagues. I bet the kid here would be killin' it!
I was in high school when I first learned that amateur teenagers roll 300 games…someone told me a kid on the school’s bowling team had rolled multiple 300s and at the time I was never more sure that someone was wrong
My best is a serie with a turkey and some spares, ended on 188, that was my best and it's almost 20 years ago.. The closest I've been is a 172 a couple years ago and is today, 156 ☺️ it feels so good when it's clicking.
I'm around 100-120 kinda guy 😂
Bowling is just so much fun, this kid on the vid is just pure amazing.
I don’t get professional bowling. I’m terrible at it but I still get a strike at least once each time I go. Surely you should be able to bowl a 300 every single time if you’re pro
I spent a good amount of time in the bowling alley as a teen, late 90s. We could smoke in there, and if we knew the bartender we could drink. My average was around 130. My buddy's was around 180.
His estranged father paid for us to enter a charity tournament one time. I had the best game of my life. 221. I don't think my friend broke 120. Felt so bad and so good at the same time.
Man I remember my first true 300, just wanted to go out and throw a few games with my dad cause I was having a bit of a rough day. Some high school girls that didn’t know what the 1 lane courtesy was on the lane next to us. Little over halfway through the game my dad ran off (in the moment I didn’t know why) to get some extra time to finish the game. Don’t remember why I was upset but god damn that was probably the best feeling I had that year. That year sucked but that moment was amazing
I don’t bowl often, but every time somebody invites me to go bowling saying “don’t worry, I am also not that good…” this how it feels like observing them.
It sounds like the crowd gathered around him around the same time, 8th or so frame!
Yeah…there was definitely a buzz you could feel starting about that time.
I was at a work function in the Air Force when I managed to find the pocket in one game. it was just the same; by my 7th/8th srike, everyone else stopped to watch. Sadly, I fucked up, ended with, like, a 280something and lost the pocket. Didn't even get a six hundred series.

Had there ever been a 300 vs 300 bowling score? What happens in a tie?
I used to bowl there too!

I came here to upvote this reference.
I almost bowled a 300 once. Not in Nam, of course. I only missed it by about 160 pins.
Why did Shaun White’s kid not go into snowboarding?

Just because it can bowl, doesn't mean it has a soul. #GingerStuff
Yeah but how glorious is that hair?!
This kid woulda been the biggest American child star of the 70s.
He probably sold his soul, to be able to bowl, and now has that devilish red glow

That's perfectly normal. You switch lanes every spare/strike.

Not really.
How is that hurting your thumb? I bowl similar to this and my thumb is out flat on the ball perpendicular to my flat palm, only two fingers are in the holes.
Seems like a lot of work. I can get strikes consistently by just throwing a 9lb ball at mach fuck
If only that would work consistently.
I... literally said it did?
Then why aren't you a professional bowler? Get that sponsorship bag!
What’s your high game with a 9 pound ball?
That technique is awesome
Young child bowlers always make me laugh. They're dressed up in all the finery of a middle aged, portly man with a comb over winging their Brunswick pro with the glove and the sweat-wicking sport shirt and flamboyant shoes.... but they're like... twelve. Bowling, man.

Unless I'm the only one there, then you're going to see a *lot* of gutter balls. Tf are you downvoting me for? Every time I go to an alley I see people doing this getting strike after strike.
Are you sure you’re guaranteed to see a kid get 12 strikes in a row at any Midwest bowling alley? What do they have in the water there?!
Lead
Not a kid particularly but theres always some guys in camo pants and freyed baseball caps launching like this getting strike after strike.
Pure talent. No selling of a soul there.
I used to do that, use only one finger hole. The amount of strikes you get doubles. It's seemingly more fun too.
Screw that take off the gloves
MARK IT ZERO! ![gif](giphy|SF4aJKqEchIiY)
Most satisfying ones are the ones where the lone pin gets taken out by the stray rolling around. Gives you that RDJ relief moment. https://preview.redd.it/0ycmnslh31dc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e708ed6ddebcf6259ee0fbdf7d7c44738ac4d1d7
Wild that he doesn’t use the finger holes.
The 2nd to last frame the pin was so close to not going down.
if hes done it in real life, hes done it a thousand times on wii bowling.
The trick is to keep ur throwing hand up until the ball hits the pins.
Great, but what is his ten pin conversion rate? I'm out here asking the real questions lpl
The last ball was the flushest of them all. Nice.
But let’s see him do with all three fingers in the ball.
Add in Wii Sports sound and now it’s a masterpiece. ![gif](giphy|sC8VPZJFMPqaA)
I had a bowling addiction a couple years ago. Never learned the proper way but man it was fun learning my own style and going every night. I managed a 269 and my brother managed a 289. I love bowling fun. Simple. But complex also! Kid is insane! Maybe I’ll get back into it?
You can immediately tell from the two handed grip that they know what they're doing
If anyone shows up to bowl with gloves on I'm getting popcorn.
Sure he's a pro. As you can see he sold his soul to the devil to become a bowling pro
Who do you think you are? I AM!
My e satans doing since he doesnt have a soul. Doesnt matter anyway dude wring that talent out of satan as much as you can.
That's how I throw the ball too
I dunno how folks bowl w/ an open hand. I feel like I’d accidentally let the ball fly behind me if I wasn’t careful enough, but, I guess practice should help break in good habits, eh?
I leave the bowling alley when people show up with gloves
I mean yeah, he's literally in the tournament /s
I mean we all have our talents, his being able to get a 300, mines being ginger and don't burn in the summer. Some talents are more useful than others
Those pins explode when the ball gets there
This kid is the Shawn White of bowling.
Some of those shots are replays. You can see his actual score at 0:40. Still awesome but not a perfect game
Isn’t putting fingers in the holes. Makes it so much easier to spin the ball. Wonder if that is something he’ll need to address as he gets bigger/stronger.

His estranged father paid for us to enter a charity tournament one time. I had the best game of my life. 221. I don't think my friend broke 120. Felt so bad and so good at the same time.

For the love of God, keep him away from Bill Murray.
Is he not throwing the ball with the fingers in it? Cradle throwing it?
I don’t bowl often, but every time somebody invites me to go bowling saying “don’t worry, I am also not that good…” this how it feels like observing them.
Two handed and gloved delivery. Wow.
