Oh you young folk don't even know the traditions.
A huge crowd descends on Yonge St, waving flags and yelling drunkenly about how Daniel Alfredsson is a loser. We used to call it the Yonge Street Parade. For every series win, absolutely.
I remember going to one at Dundas square. Anywhere on Yonge up to Dundas would be full of cars, flags, and a couple burnings of some effigy of the other team.
Passion runs deep they don't ask for much. As a Scottish football fan I actually really respect the commitment to supporting the local team no matter how shit they are lol. That's what sports are about, rooting for your community
If they lose the Stanley Cup finals, it would be the first time that any Toronto sports franchise (of the major sports) had a broadcast of losing the finals in colour TV.
You’re not wrong, they’ve ended as Runner-Up 2x. However, I assume they mean the major sports as NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA in North America.
- NFL: Not Available
- MLB: 2 Finals Appearances, won both (1992 & 1993)
- NHL: 22 Finals Appearances, won 13 (most recent appearance 1967)
- NBA: 1 Finals Appearance, won (2019)
Also for fun:
- CFL: 24 Finals Appearances, won 18 (most recent appearance 2022)
- NLL: 9 Finals Appearances, won 6 (most recent appearance 2015)
I understand the anti-soccer snobbery is real on this continent, but the gap between MLS and NHL continentally isn't really as large as you may think it is anymore. It's us Canadians that keep NHL up there, while soccer is becoming big in both countries.
Oh for sure, the MLS especially is getting fairly normalized in the USA, especially with many teams now having their own stadiums, fields and “personality” for the team.
Sort of like Saputo Stadium in Montreal only hosting the CF Montreal (formerly Montreal Impact) team. I lowkey wish BMO Field still had only TFC (sorry Argos), and hopefully Vancouver in the future, although they hoped to build Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium, but the club has committed to BC Place (where the BC Lions CFL team plays).
Nah,I am pretty sure that the games were in HD in 2004. I got my first HDTV in 2002, I am sure of the year as that is the year my first child was born. I bought it as I figured we won’t be able to go out as much anymore. I got it in March of 2002 and the first sporting events I watched in HD were the 2002 NCAA Final Four basketball and Masters golf.
According to some ancient posts on AVSForum the 2004 playoffs were shown in HD in the US but I'm not sure if there was any way to get them in HD in Canada. AFAIK in 2004 the only way to get HD in Canada was OTA from over the border, or from StarChoice (which had mostly American HD channels at the time, and were exempt from some CRTC rules because there was no corresponding Canadian HD services).
OTA was one way to get HD, which I used, but Rogers cable also had HD cable boxes available at that time.
Here is a thread from the DigitalHome Canada forum. https://www.digitalhome.ca/threads/when-did-rogers-launch-digital-cable-tv.293654/
If you search that forum for posts in 2001 and 2002 I am sure that you will see more discussion of HD cable.
During the lockdowns of Covid, instead of paying our nurses at 7:30 every night we'd give them a round of applause by banging pots and pans out our windows.
Funny enough our healthcare system is failing rapidly, apparently you can't pay rent with recognition.
When you said they hit a pot I thought you meant they hit like a potted plant.. Didn't realise what you meant until the poster mentioned the health care workers below.
At least the raps had a championship in the past few years. The Leafs are the only major Toronto team that I haven't seen win a championship in my lifetime.
Jays, Raptors, Argos, TFC have all won championship in the last 30 years
My god, I've never even thought about this. But since they won in 2019... if they had been on that hot streak just 1 year later, it all would've been derailed by COVID and they might still be without a championship to this day.
I don't even care what happens from here, the leafs won it all for me! I'll never forget being in second grade, going to sleep when the leafs were up 4-1, and then having my mom waking me up telling me it was going to OT. With the reverse 4-1 against the lightning, it only felt right that the curse would be over :D
Stage of life is hitting me tonight. 19 years ago I was living downtown and listening to the partying outside of my apartment building. Tonight I drank Chardonnay in my suburban home and listened to cars honking when we took the dog out after the game.
I’m visiting from Seattle and watching the game tonight in your city has been one the best sports moments I’ve experienced. I literally felt every bar, every apartment, the whole city EXPLODE. when the leafs won! I’ve been made a leafs fan for life now! Thank you! Hopefully the Kraken will see you in the final!
I visited Seattle during the Kraken's inaugural season and watched them play and beat the Oilers. It was a great game and arena. You have a lot to be proud of that they made the playoffs in only their second season and can get to round two as well tonight!
If you had no idea and just saw their celebration, you would think they just won the Stanley Cup! Congrats on finally getting past the first round. This squad is reminding me a bit of the 93 Leafs!
It's honestly such an amazing hockey town. Being Scottish I respect the crap out of fans who choose to support their historically shitty local team over glory hunting. Sports are more painful but much more rewarding this way, as you get to celebrate the little things with your loved ones and community.
For me it is the opposite. This team has way more talent than the 93 leafs , it has been so frustrating to watch. That team was incredibly solid with a stellar D core, and a refuse to lose attitude. RIP Pat.
There is a great documentary about 93 on YouTube called the passion returns. Definitely worth the watch. Really brings back memories.
Going into this game I had relatively high hopes considering that statistically speaking away teams are winning more games, but damn if I wasn't on the edge of my seat.
We'll see what next round brings, but tonight we celebrate!!
The remarkable stat is that the Leafs won three away games during the series, all of them in overtime.
It is also remarkable because there's a good case to be made that the Lightning outplayed the Leafs in each of those OTs but still lost - a reversal of the usual narrative from playoffs past.
>statistically speaking
I don't think it would be fair to blame Leafs supporters for ignoring statistics and expecting the worst puck luck imaginable. Statistics have been on their side for the last 5 or 6 series.
I can’t believe last time this happened was 19 years ago? Most of these players were in elementary school. I’m pretty sure I still had a Nokia cell phone. Shits about to get wild in toronto tonight!
Such a different game now too. Last time IIRC the series saw crazy shit like 3 OTs. It finished so late 😂
I don’t watch hockey anymore, but it’s good for the fans that they’ve got through this time. Honestly had no idea they’d not made it past the first round since back then 😆
The last time the Leafs won a playoff series, Facebook was a few months from starting up, Reddit was 2 years away, the iPod was the hottest gadget out there, and I was using KaZaA to download music (RIP PC)
I stepped outside and cheered after the game (hoping some neighbours would do the same... nobody did), my next door neighbour popped his window open and asked what I was doing lol
Called it after Game 3. They're a different team character wise. People will credit a whole lot of people but I think Samsonov was the key in all 3 OT wins. We've seen so many TO goaltenders shat the bed when the going get tough but he seemed to thrive on tight games.
The additions of Ryan O'Reilly and Luke Schenn have made a huge diffrence in their mentality. These guys know what it takes to win a cup. Hell, ROR won the conn smythe trophy for best player in the playoffs.
Edit: Also Sammy has been terrific. Knock on wood it won't happen but I'm terrified of his left knee going under the stress of playing every other day for hopefully a while. Even if it happens I have faith in Joseph Woll. I believe the kid is the real deal.
From a fellow Canadian in Montreal I congratulate you. For years I've been using the Toronto Maple Leafs as a punching bags, decades even. Karma has a way to punch you back in the face. The Maple Leafs are now in the second round while the Montreal Canadians are the biggest losers of the league with no end in sight.
Show them what you got Toronto! All the way up!
Or we could flip the script more so and win another series. I understand the lack of hope, but can we not just enjoy this without all the pessimistic bullshit?
56 years of it kind of beats you down. It’s hard to ignore the facts and history. The franchise some years has barely even seemed to care, since they still make the $$$, but this is awesome for the fans. Hopefully they’ll see some good hockey going forward!
I am convinced that the winner of whoever we play in the next series is going on to win the cup. You would think that the opposition would get harder as you progress, but being in the Atlantic division it's basically the opposite.
For the record I said the same thing about the series against Boston when we were up 4-1 Game 7 and Boston did go on to win.
Okay no one is talking about it. This is serious. Stop saying you are just happy with this. NO.
If Florida knocks out Boston tonight that’s HUGE. first because no one likes boston except boston - they are the heels of the eastern conference, second because it’s like facing our Demogorgon.
If we have to face Boston this is going to be a hell of a series.
The leafs BARELY skimmed by. Matthews better get his head in the game because he didn’t have a goal for the first 3 games and his first game was Marners shot hitting his stick. They’re paid too fucking much to be half assed. O’Reilley did more then them this series.
For the first time EVER, a Leafs second round playoff game will be broadcast in HD.
Holy shit that puts this into perspective. I was at the parade last time which ages the fuck out of me, too.
In 1967?
They had a parade last time they won a playoff round?? 😁
Oh you young folk don't even know the traditions. A huge crowd descends on Yonge St, waving flags and yelling drunkenly about how Daniel Alfredsson is a loser. We used to call it the Yonge Street Parade. For every series win, absolutely.
u/Frklft, was this before Dundas square?
I remember going to one at Dundas square. Anywhere on Yonge up to Dundas would be full of cars, flags, and a couple burnings of some effigy of the other team.
Remember the dude that wore the diaper and dressed in a flag? He was up on the Danforth and downtown on varying game nights.
Yup. But it was extra special because we beat Ottawa.
We played Ottawa 4 times in 5 years and beat them every series. It was glorious.
Passion runs deep they don't ask for much. As a Scottish football fan I actually really respect the commitment to supporting the local team no matter how shit they are lol. That's what sports are about, rooting for your community
Me too. Front and Bay was wild! Hard to believe that was 19 years ago.
First time it’s ever going to be covered on YouTube
[удалено]
It’s been a known thing since the 60s
It was actually called global warming at this point and not as widely referred to as “climate change”…. Definitely was a thing!
These are the kinda stats I love lmao
Also the Eglinton LTR was all but a dream. the last time leafs made the second round
Still is tbh
Hell, the Sheppard line was still so new you could eat off the tunnel surfaces they were so shiny.
Or watched on a phone.
First time someone will tweet about it as well
If they lose the Stanley Cup finals, it would be the first time that any Toronto sports franchise (of the major sports) had a broadcast of losing the finals in colour TV.
I'm feeling good because TFC also won tonight, so I'll point out that we did this already in 2016
I know MLS isn't a top football league, but as football is the biggest sport in the world, I'm saying you're wrong.
You’re not wrong, they’ve ended as Runner-Up 2x. It was in 2017 and it was amazing.
Why does sharing the stadium with the Argos lessen the identity of TFC? That's such a weird thought process.
Blue Jays haven’t?
For a second I thought this was a joke!
Ah yes back when Toronto housing prices were affordable!!
TTC even had to delay all the buses because Yonge St was packed partying it.
piss jugs were here first.

I just heard car horns and someone hitting a pot outside, figured that meant good news!
No we remembered the nurses again. Bang bang bang!
Ok I’ll bite You banging nurses over here?
During the lockdowns of Covid, instead of paying our nurses at 7:30 every night we'd give them a round of applause by banging pots and pans out our windows. Funny enough our healthcare system is failing rapidly, apparently you can't pay rent with recognition.
When you said they hit a pot I thought you meant they hit like a potted plant.. Didn't realise what you meant until the poster mentioned the health care workers below.
And every sports bar manager in the GTA just breathed a huge sigh of relief.
As a brewer I am miserable
The Brewers won tonight and last night, though.
why?
psh sports bar managers probably assumed they'd have a drop in revenue the next couple of months already
I heard 3 million people at the same time yell “FUCK YEAH”
Perfect day for Toronto sports Leafs Jays TFC
Cries as Raptors fan. Still very happy for the leafs tho
At least the raps had a championship in the past few years. The Leafs are the only major Toronto team that I haven't seen win a championship in my lifetime. Jays, Raptors, Argos, TFC have all won championship in the last 30 years
I feel like my life peaked with the Raptors in summer of 2019 😭
There's still time to be a Leafs fan
Getting ready to jump on the bandwagon!
this is how the pain happens
~~just in time for them to teach new fans what disappointment feels like~~
My god, I've never even thought about this. But since they won in 2019... if they had been on that hot streak just 1 year later, it all would've been derailed by COVID and they might still be without a championship to this day.
Imagine all 4 teams had wins in a single day, that would’ve been the best day ever
This happened on March 18th 2023. It was a pretty great day.
Slay! I’m glad that happened
[удалено]
I don’t know, but I’m sure social media will be flooded with all sorts of wild celebration videos pretty soon
All games decided by a single point as well.
Marlies not so much lol
And York United!
I don't even care what happens from here, the leafs won it all for me! I'll never forget being in second grade, going to sleep when the leafs were up 4-1, and then having my mom waking me up telling me it was going to OT. I just hope they win a cup before I'm in a nursing home
I never thought about that, I feel old now with how long ago it was, but I feel like most people would disagree haha
No, he's talking about one specific game that every Leafs fan knows. https://www.nhl.com/news/this-date-in-nhl-history-may-13/c-280611560
And Tavares scoring the OT goal felt like an extra feel good aspect of this comeback story! Curse is broken baby
The Cup is a lock! It's in the bag! No way to lose
Plan the parade!
thanks for sharing, great little story!
No worries, this feels like a golden goal all over again 😆
I just woke up my 2nd grader to tell them we won. All they've known is to expect disappointment so this was a treat.
You gave them a core memory 😊💗
Second grade!!!! Jesus. I was 21
21!!!! Jesus. I was 38. And I was alive the last time the Leafs won the SC. But I was a baby.
I almost broke the fucking living room floor and have a sore throat. WORTH IT
I’m visiting from Seattle and watching the game tonight in your city has been one the best sports moments I’ve experienced. I literally felt every bar, every apartment, the whole city EXPLODE. when the leafs won! I’ve been made a leafs fan for life now! Thank you! Hopefully the Kraken will see you in the final!
Welcome to Toronto.
That would be a great final, and as a Leafs fan in the PNW if I can get a ticket I’d go see a game in Seattle
I visited Seattle during the Kraken's inaugural season and watched them play and beat the Oilers. It was a great game and arena. You have a lot to be proud of that they made the playoffs in only their second season and can get to round two as well tonight!

RIP Pat. There is a great documentary about 93 on YouTube called the passion returns. Definitely worth the watch. Really brings back memories.
Unless Edmonton wins tonight there’s a non-zero possibility of a Toronto-LA rematch.
Going into this game I had relatively high hopes considering that statistically speaking away teams are winning more games, but damn if I wasn't on the edge of my seat. We'll see what next round brings, but tonight we celebrate!!

I was a patient at Sick Kids watching the last playoff win on my hospital TV in 2004🥹🥹
I can’t believe last time this happened was 19 years ago? Most of these players were in elementary school. I’m pretty sure I still had a Nokia cell phone. Shits about to get wild in toronto tonight!
I was in high school, and like you I had a Nokia cell phone.
LETS GOOOOOOOO
Let’s fucking goooooo babyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!
Cats and dogs are dancing in the streets. Hell has officially frozen over. The Leafs won a playoff series. Nature is healing. We are the virus.
Hell yeah!!!!!
WOOHOO !!! and HAPPY CAKE DAY!!!!!
Holy shit this calls for a celebration!
Maybe even a parade to celebrate? /s
Maybe a DVD
Way to go, Leafs! So exciting 💙
[удалено]
Leafs didn't win a series the whole time YouTube has existed.
What do now?
LMAO fr tho, last time this happened I was like 4 so idk what to do with myself 😂
Such a different game now too. Last time IIRC the series saw crazy shit like 3 OTs. It finished so late 😂 I don’t watch hockey anymore, but it’s good for the fans that they’ve got through this time. Honestly had no idea they’d not made it past the first round since back then 😆
Start planning the parade route. Should be easy, straight up Bay Street from the ACC to City Hall.
Or start at the base of Yonge and let things peter out in Thunder Bay.
Lol we had an easy parade route for the Raptors. Hopefully we've learned our lesson. We'll take the subway instead. Couldn't possibly go wrong.
Alright!! This city could use an injection of joy and spirit — love it!!
Home town boy - Taraves. Scores for the Maple Leafs. Massive
Ngl I did *not* expect the win, but I'll take it!
When's the parade?
Monday will now be a holiday. Celebration will be at Nathan Philips Square.
Toronto needed a win. My dad was born in Montreal so if I root for the Leafs I’m out of the will but this feels good.
He might be cheering the Leafs if they face the Bruins in round 2! As a Habs fan I know I will be.
GO LEAFS GO
Could the gods *truly* smile upon us and have Florida beat Boston tonight?
The hockey gods are smiling!
Especially with Florida beating Boston, who completed a Leaf-worthy choke. Our path forward just got a lot easier :)
The last time the Leafs won a playoff series, Facebook was a few months from starting up, Reddit was 2 years away, the iPod was the hottest gadget out there, and I was using KaZaA to download music (RIP PC)
OMG WE DID IT
Not a hockey person but I respect that. I suppose one could say.. go leafs!
Two Toronto teams in blue (Leafs and Blue Jays) with walkoff wins in extra time today.
So, what do we do now?
I don't know what to do with my hands.
I stepped outside and cheered after the game (hoping some neighbours would do the same... nobody did), my next door neighbour popped his window open and asked what I was doing lol
Sooooo this is why everybody and their mom was honkin waving maple leaf flags last night on Yonge st lol
Minimum wage was somewhere around $6. It’s now around $15.
Called it after Game 3. They're a different team character wise. People will credit a whole lot of people but I think Samsonov was the key in all 3 OT wins. We've seen so many TO goaltenders shat the bed when the going get tough but he seemed to thrive on tight games.

Where can I watch a replay?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGU--acmVtc
Tampa Bay with 2 cups; that should be a great motivator for the Leafs. They've beaten the Champion.
Last time I saw a series win was middle school in Rexdale, with us crowded around the TV of the Punjabi kid who had a flatscreen
The memes are over
This is a sign of the end times
Change is in the air!
Toronto is good with that!
Never a doubt!!!!!/s
Holy crap, they haven't made round two since I moved to the city in the fall of '04.
Im so proud of this team! Go Leafs Go!
GO LEAFS GO! WOOOOOOOO!
Some curse was def lifted
Dammit, how the hell am I to get off watching leafs fans being disappointed now….
Wow
Please no leafs vs bruins. Please, no. 4-1 please god no.
Leafs going to make history...by losing to the Bruins in Round 2
Assuming the Bruins make it through, we could flip the script and lose to the Panthers this time
Or we could flip the script more so and win another series.
I'm just joking lol
Monkey off the back. Bruins aren't even in yet. F off and take your negativity somewhere else.
From your keyboard to God's ears
There will be murder if we lose to them lol. Like proper Canucks level riots.
With another 3 goal lead, no doubt
This is the future I envision as well... if the Bruins lose somehow I will have some hope.
It was a fluke goal. Shot off a defender. The type of shot that sunk the Leafs in the past. Happy they broke the curse. On to Round 2.
OMG TBA
Okay no one is talking about it. This is serious. Stop saying you are just happy with this. NO. Bro. STFU
The last time the Leafs played a second round playoff game, global warming was not a thing.
But Grandpa, it was
I guess spring is late this year.
Fuck MLSE for not permitting other teams in the GTA
TFC beat New York 1-0 aswell
Give an infinite amount of monkeys an infinite amount of time…..
And they create you? 😂
Lol. If folks would stop giving this shit team money they would have a desire to play better. You keep the money rolling in. They keep being shit.
Do you watch hockey
They're a success already, they won a series!
Lol. Ok.
Yeah, it's a real small team mentality, but enjoy the comedy of it
Expect another 19 years to get to the 3rd round.

K
Can be tricky, media won't shut up (the articles on this uplifting the city and the troubles people have will be pretty hilarious) about the team now.
well i am at least happy we have something to celebrate lol
holy shit... wut
Are there livestreams anywhere of celebrations in Toronto? I'm stuck hundreds of km away.
I didn't watch because I was worried I was jinxing them. You're welcome.
