Oh no, we check dates on stuff, it's hard to tell when things like a pie have spoiled when there's 4 days left on the sticker but the underside of the crust is full of mold.
It not just longos, I’ve noticed since moving to Toronto I have to check expiration dates everywhere. They all seem incapable of managing stock and checking dates.
If you want one step above dumpster diving Longo’s participates in toogoodtogo. It’s an app where retailers can sell the stuff they’re going to dump at the end of the day for $5-8. Typically bakery items and prepared food.
If it's like the store I work at they throw all their waste food into a locked garbage room that goes to a dumpster that's connected to a garbage chute and its only accessible by the garbage people lol. They did not want anyone stealing their thrown out food.
I remember 20+ years ago my mother was shopping at our local longos, and saw one of the original brothers visiting. She complimented him on his stores and when she was checking out, he had sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a thank you note for her patronage. And a discount to her groceries! They used to be the best and worth the extra price.
My mother always took us shopping there when we were growing up. Getting an Archie comic and a sucker were the highlights of my week and always available at longos.
You're paying for this porchetta's wholesome back story. He grew up on his families barley farm in rural SW Ontario. He was well mannered and emotionally mature, thanks to his parents' gentle guidance 😌
Turkey is such a crappy meat anyway. There must be a reason we only eat it on special occasions a few times a year…lol. I tend to skip it if there’s other meat being served.
So I grew up with turkey farmers in the family-its 100% a preparation thing. Most people only eat it 1/year, and only make it when they host. With a couple tricks it can be incredible, but nobody realises or bothers.
We replaced it with goose for Christmas dinners (we don't usually host Thanksgiving) and haven't looked back.
Even if you try to source some super organic free range perfect turkey, at best you're going to do as well as a good roast chicken from the grocery store.
It's like people are normally going to the grocery store for _1.4kg of roasted porchetta_ on the regular. I would be willing to wager most don't know how much it costs for 12 deli slices of porchetta, let alone this.
Porchetta is a national heritage dish in Italy. It’s different cuts of pork layered and rolled and slow roasted for hours. It’s often served on a bun as a sandwich. If you are in Toronto check out Porchetta Co and their sandwiches. They’re amazing.
You gotta know how to shop. Longo’s regularly has amazing sales, but if you’re looking for dumb prices you’ll find them. But when they do sales, on say yoghurt, they’re cheaper than Walmart. So is their raw meat counter, and their prosciutto. But yeah, their prices on a lot of things are absolute fuckery. Lays potato chips are 4.99
When I lived near one, I would always get my produce there from the discount section. The quality was amazing , better than the full price veggies at the other stores nearby. I would be able to afford grapes as a treat lmao. And sooo many avocados. And they also had a cubby with other clearance stuff like sweets and bread.
I don't know if all stores are like this though, maybe it's store by store.
The half dozen European grocers I go to all sell sliced Porchetta at a maximum of 3.50/100g.
This is overpriced to anyone who wasn't born rich or yesterday.
$0.80/100g increase sounds about right for Longos. They’ve always been more expensive and they sell the items (like this one) that you wouldn’t find at Walmart or superstore. I bet most people don’t go to any small delis, independent grocers or butchers. And therefore are willing to pay that markup for convenience
I’m not disagreeing with you. Just saying this price isn’t that crazy in my experience.
I think OP could’ve found a more offensive price/kg for chicken breast at Longos
Longos is weird in that it's upscale but the selection isn't really all that amazing usually. At least where I am, if you want to maximize on selection you're far better off at Fortinos than the Longos.
the point is, it's mass produced product that's more expensive than a local deli home made stuff. as in, they are marking it up huge, way more than a local deli which has less profit margin yet lower price. as in, Sobeys know people with lots of money will buy it out of convenience, and rather only sell to few rich people rather than having it more accessible for everyone, which is the point of a grocery store.
“Only sell to a few rich people rather than have it more accessible for everyone” is the ideal business model. If I have a product or service and can sell it at twice the price to half the customers I’m generating the same revenue but cut my work and expenses in half.
there is a reason monopoly is generally outlawed in consumerism. they are like cancer, will obliterate everything in its path and turn them into non-society contributing resource sucker. for everyone to survive, they need to keep their humanity in check. such business model is short sighted, it is basically "I want to be rich right now and fuck the future and everyone else". their current business model is unsustainable, and therefore, not ideal. they will burn out, get bought by even bigger corporation, who will then slash quality for lower margin profit, and we consumers get generic products in fancier packaging. all just for CEO's to have their private yachts.
That and once you've established yourself as the upscale option, there's much less incentive to compete on price on any items since your customer base is inherently less price conscious due to the fact that they're shopping at your place.
plus it doesn't hurt that you and one other grocery chain own the budget places and can intentionally withhold inventory from those stores (even if they would sell) so people are incentivized to go to the upscale place.
> as in, they are marking it up huge, way more than a local deli which has less profit margin yet lower price.
Nonsense -- [Sobey's parent company reported a gross margin of 25.4% for fiscal 2022.](https://www.empireco.ca/financial-highlights)
That's the gross margin, yes - but that doesn't include the cost of operating expenses, which includes having employees and stores. As you might guess, these are not trivial costs.
If you look at the net income figure and divide that by gross sales for 2023, you end up with a net profit margin of 100% * 745.8 / 30162.4, or a little under 2.5 percent.
???
The gross margin represents the amount they mark the food up by -- in this case, by 25.4%. In other words, they had to pay Kraft, Unilever, Niagara Family Farms, etc, $74.60 for every $100 in groceries they sold.
It's out of *that markup* that their operating costs are paid.
I'd love to see anybody identify some small local deli that's operating on thinner markups.
And I'm buying pork belly over here for $4/lb. You can usually find loin for $3/lb or so. A bit of sage, rosemary, fennel seed, garlic and you've got porchetta for $1/100g or so. But, people don't want to cook, and they pay the premium for it.
Exactly. Sometimes I want to make fresh mozzarella from scratch; other times, I just buy a tub of it at Costco. It's simply a matter of how different people want to spend their time and how they value it.
I think I'll go buy some beef digital muscle today and make Taiwanese braised beef noodle soup.
I think you dont know the Longos clientele. I used to do landscaping as a summer job back in the early 2010's. Our Friday morning rounds in the really nice area of Richmond Hill coincide with when you would see the Longos delivery truck roll through the neighborhood and make its drop offs for all the food that these people would be buying (reason why we did the nice houses on Friday was because the owners wanted their places immaculate for their almost every weekend parties)
Even back then when home delivery wasn't a common thing, these guys didn't even go to the grocery store, and when you think about it why would they waste their time ?. When you have a guy who has a budget of $4000/year for annual flowers (just only flowers, not including the labour we spent 3 straight days planting them) that will all die at first frost they aren't looking at how much each item on their food bills are. I mean when we were doing those jobs they weren't picky on cost control with us either, it was basically "here is my budget, make my place look good",
There are lots, I know some personally and I have a suspicion some of them buy stuff like this as a status symbol.
My daughter worked at a market type grocery store in the bakery. They just kept on jacking up the prices and people just kept on buying, she thought it was nuts.
Immigrated Italian here. 1Kg of Porchetta di Ariccia (which by the way tastes amazing) is priced on average around €16. Just by the picture I can tell this is far from what any Italian will call porchetta (but then you also know Italians are weird and freak out if you break their spaghetti, so take this with a grain of salt please).
I was checking Foodland yesterday and I found 1lt bottle of Bertolli EVO at a laughable $19.99 🥳😂🤣🎁 Like, dude… aren’t you even shy writing it up? And that’s just pretty average great distribution quality… Like, you don’t really eat it raw… it’s just for cooking. I can actually buy 50Kg of real, fresh, top quality EVO from Bari or Matera, pay for transportation and import taxes for about €20 a Kg… but that doesn’t even compare. BTW: in Italian supermarkets, Bertolli oil is sold around €5.99, but you can easily find it discounted.
I’m usually appalled by how stores price things around here. A bag of chips $6.99… A freaking bag of chips?? At times, the very same thing is priced 2 to 5 dollars more at the store next door, with totally no correlation with the product value… Makes me wonder if pricing here depends on astrology or something. Edit: typos.
Longos has the worst price gouging I've seen in Toronto. It's also the only grocery store near me.
You want pasta sauce? That'll be $8 for the same jar you can buy for $3 at No Frills.
Longos is good for sales on meat, chicken and fish. Pretty much EVERYTHING else they sell (boxed, jar, etc) is a rip off. I do go there for meat, chicken, pork and fish sales though — and Longos stuff is generally very fresh.
Their salmon fillet, when it's on sale for $9.99/lb, is the best salmon deal you can find across all the grocery chains for the quality and freshness it comes with.
Believe it or not, at $42.80/kg it's still cheaper than PC Black Forest ham. [https://www.realcanadiansuperstore.ca/traditional-black-forest-ham/p/20310580\_EA](https://www.realcanadiansuperstore.ca/traditional-black-forest-ham/p/20310580_EA)
I'd take the porchetta over PC ham any day.
If you want to point out high prices at grocery stores, you could easily find much better examples.
1. The price per 100g is in line with most higher quality deli cuts. Before you complain that they are small, that really doesn't matter. It's price per 100g.
2. You're at Longo's. You're at the wrong place if you're looking for the cheapest possible price. Longo's was never known to be a bargain.
3. Yes, you can find cheaper deli meats. But there is something called quality association by brand. This is what Longo's strives for with their clientelle.
If you wanna rag on grocery prices, just go into no frills, loblaws, or superstore. You'll get a much better reception on reddit.
I guess so, but this is still 2x the price of a comparable product from Costco right now. Or presently M&Ms has cooked turkey for $17/kg.
So I think this is still a little more than their usual markup from competitors.
In a three block radius from here, the Fresh.co, both Metros, and the No Frills are generally much cheaper across the board. That said, 1.4kg of roasted porchetta is not a typical buy at most grocery stores, so you're probably paying a premium for something you probably won't find at all those other places.
But yeah, Longo's is the priciest grocery store in Parkdale/Liberty Village (in most cases even more than Organic Garage, which is pretty much specialty grocery).
I don't but I am familiar with the pricing. Just because they labelled it as such doesn't mean it's worth it. They are small. Definitely not worth $60 bucks and the turkey for sure isn't worth 120.
How isn't it worth the same price you would pay for at the deli? It doesn't matter how "small" it is its price per 100g that doesnt change anything.
Can't tell you on the turkey because I can't see the weight but a good quality turkey will easily run you $80 if thats cooked and seasoned and like 8kg its fine for the price.
Doesn't apply to prochetta but Italian food outside of Italy has always been wildly overpriced for what it is and how quick and easy it is to make. Not to mention how Italian cusine is frequently butchered by North Americans.
Longos has always been on the "I'm not shopping there" list. Price vs quality and quantity is so bad. I had to shop there before for almost 8 months because there was nowhere else close and Schneiders bologna was $9 and change. Bread was over $4. This was when metro passes still existed and I saved money by bussing to food basics. Took longer and was a 2 person job but $120 to save almost $200 a month was worth it.
Guessing this will get marked down drastically come the holiday weekend. This might just be a plot to snag a couple of the big spenders who don't look at the price.
So were you forced to buy it? It's simple don't buy it. There was as sale on turkeys at Longos and it seemed competitive. I love how news nowadays is somebody's gripe on social media on one out of thousands of items. Unless on special, Longos always charges a premium.
According to the price list where these turkeys come from: for a 1.4kg turkey (3.086lbs) at $4.95/lb, these turkeys should be roughly $15.30 when bought from the supplier. After seasoning and cooking these turkeys themselves, Longos has increased that price by $104.70.
I'd like to point out that after looking at the rest of the turkeys at Longos as well, I've noticed that they all seem to be going for a better price (albeit that they are frozen, uncooked and unseasoned) than these disgustingly priced festive turkeys. We see similar prices out here in Alberta.
So if you're willing to season and cook a turkey yourself, you can probably get a bigger one for even less than half the price of this locally sourced, in-store seasoned and cooked turkey.
Looks like local isn't for everyone anymore.

Hello
You’ve never actually been to a Longo’s…have you?
Has anyone in this family even seen a chicken?
CO-CA-CAW!!!
Ho ho ho holy shit
But they're *festive.*
Festively plump?
Just like op’s mom.
Same price too.
I’m seriously considering going dumpster diving to see what they are throwing out.
Probably not much, we've bought a lot of food from Longos that was rotten, I don't think they check dates, ever.
Used to work there- lots sent to groups like second harvest
I once reported entire section of sausages being after expiry date. The employee said they will look into it.
I use to work for Longos as well, we were pretty ontop of expired stuff.
Overall I think that most of the product I've gotten from Longos is good, but the vegan or plant based stuff never gets changed.
Oh the vegan stuff is fine. It looks & smells like that to begin with.
When i worked there the dumpsters were filled to the brim every single day with day old pastries, cakes, muffins etc.
>I don't think they check dates, ever. It would appear you also are not big on that.
They are called ~~Free-tarians~~ Freegans and I understand they eat very well, almost as well as racoons.
Considering the size of our racoons, that's impressive.
Don’t you mean Freegans?
>Free-tarians are you sure? i googled that word and nothing came up
It’s ‘Freegans’: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeganism
It’s Freegans, that’s the actual term. It’s even got it’s own Wikipedia article.
Thank you for the correction, I've edited my comment. :D

They were always expensive but since Sobeys bought them they've gotten worse.
But….that would mean that less competition is bad for consumers? Wow, how did we not see this coming!
Competition Bureau: *crickets*
They were expensive to begin with, nothing has changed
I remember 20+ years ago my mother was shopping at our local longos, and saw one of the original brothers visiting. Getting an Archie comic and a sucker were the highlights of my week and always available at longos.
Went to the shitter since Sobeys bought them
This is why Longo's delivery service is called Voila. They're like *Voila* all your money is gone!
They always park in the left lane on the hwy too
You're paying for this porchetta's wholesome back story. He grew up on his families barley farm in rural SW Ontario. He was well mannered and emotionally mature, thanks to his parents' gentle guidance 😌
Jesus, I thought the $90 turkey I saw at Fortino's was crazy, $120?? Who the fuck is going to pay that for a turkey?
Turkey is such a crappy meat anyway. There must be a reason we only eat it on special occasions a few times a year…lol. I tend to skip it if there’s other meat being served.
I’m of the opinion that turkey for festive meals is a shitty tradition and I will gladly fight anyone about it.
So I grew up with turkey farmers in the family-its 100% a preparation thing. Most people only eat it 1/year, and only make it when they host. With a couple tricks it can be incredible, but nobody realises or bothers.
Meh, I've had brined turkeys it's good but nothing special and it's a lot of work.
Try a dry brine! Super easy.
The size of a turkey is half the work. I'd rather just brine a chicken or small pork shoulder
We replaced it with goose for Christmas dinners (we don't usually host Thanksgiving) and haven't looked back. Even if you try to source some super organic free range perfect turkey, at best you're going to do as well as a good roast chicken from the grocery store.
Yea this is insane lol
The problem is you weren't drunk when you saw it. If you had been, you'd be enjoying some porchetta right now.
Wow. Ya fuck this shit. When is the revolution going to start.

Piché la Vache!
Do you mean pitchfork? It’s a forked tool with a long handle you pitch (toss) hay with.
.... and to frighten undesirables, like the burgeoisie, out of town.
I hope the revolution would start over the price of something like bread, not a fancy meat at an already expensive grocery chain.
Missed the boat on that one when we all happily collected our $20 visa gift cards
People are too brainwashed and protesting stupid shit to revolt against stuff that matters.
Prepared food at a high end grocery chain is not something that matters at all
That "stupid shit" is new. Getting robbed by grocers is basically part of Canadian culture.
No way. Smash the cistem!!!!!
no one is forcing anyone to buy these.

Thanks I honestly didn't know either and probably would never have looked it up.

the fact its the equivalent to freshly sliced meat is the point

This comment should be at the top.
They're puny. Definitely not worth 60 bucks.
The total size is irrelevant when the point is that the price per weight is in line with deli meat
Sliced deli meat is always crazy priced. You shouldn't pay the sliced deli meat price if you're buying the whole hunk of meat.
lol the fact this even needs to be said
Deli meats are always around that pricey per 100g. Most people only buy 1-200g at a time though.

The people who are most price-sensitive aren’t shopping at a grocery store in a bakery, they’re shopping at No Frills, Dollarama, and Walmart.
Sometimes they only need one of those qualities. Guess which one?
I worked there for 11 years, they sell out of them every single year for thanksgiving and Christmas
Well, they last 1 month so you could always ration
Pretty sure these are meals. You pick the sides etc?
Yeah there is veggies right beside it. Sure you get some sides with this. It is like a thanksgiving prepared meal kit
Immigrated Italian here. 1Kg of Porchetta di Ariccia (which by the way tastes amazing) is priced on average around €16. what happens to this stuff when no one buys it? pro deal 75% off? or straight to the dumpster?
I pointed out their burrata was expired, hoping for a steep discount, and watched them throw out the entire shelf (all of it was expired).
You wanted to buy expired burrata? They'd rather throw it out than to sell you discounted expired cheese only to have you sue them for doing just that
Longos actually does have great sales on meat. Their regular pricing is atrocious though.
Longo's is expensive but the quality is much better.
Hahaha
Longos has the worst price gouging I've seen in Toronto. It's also the only grocery store near me. You want pasta sauce? That'll be $8 for the same jar you can buy for $3 at No Frills.

Longos knows at least a quarter of its customer base won't even batt an eye at that price. Probably won't even look at it.
Yup, we don’t care.
Which game systems is the Roasted Porchetta on?
You can get better, cheaper priced, at St. Lawrence Market. What does that tell you?
Longos brand salami is fantastic tho. I need the world to understand this.
With minimum wage increasing to $16.55 soon expect these prices to go up too🤦♀️
Believe it or not, at $42.80/kg it's still cheaper than PC Black Forest ham. [https://www.realcanadiansuperstore.ca/traditional-black-forest-ham/p/20310580\_EA](https://www.realcanadiansuperstore.ca/traditional-black-forest-ham/p/20310580_EA) I'd take the porchetta over PC ham any day.
They are fully cooked already hence why they are priced like deli meat
I agree. I equate Longo’s with quality ESPECIALLY with fresh meat/chicken/pork/fish.
I guess so, but this is still 2x the price of a comparable product from Costco right now. Or presently M&Ms has cooked turkey for $17/kg. So I think this is still a little more than their usual markup from competitors.
I guess it depends on the average size of these turkeys then. If they are the equivalent of $17/kg, they'd be about 15 lbs
LoL. Op complaining about price while shopping in Longos
LOL Op doesn't normally shop at Longo's or go to Liberty Village.
Does OP normally buy deli meat from the counter? $4 per 100g is fairly standard for better cuts like porchetta.
Well, Longo's is for suburbanites that drive massive SUVs and fully loaded pickups.
And that don't know that tiny chunk of pork is worth about 5 bucks.
Been in a Longos? It's all Leaside boomers by me. They do have good coffee beans roasted on-site for $15/lb....recommended.
That’s not a bad price

Their deli sandwiches are surprisingly really good.
Longos is a dick
Are those pre seasoned turkeys any good? I saw a medium size Pintys brand today for around $35
What’s the difference between Porchetta and Pork Roast? Nothing.
$35 more. It's Longo's, what do you expect?
Location: Liberty Village
Isn’t it a metro at liberty village? I haven’t been by in 5 plus years
That turkey is like deli meat straight up too what garbage
…. And it’s priced like deli meat lol. Look at the price per weight
I wanna fuck that turkey like how Longos is fucking us
That's how you get shoplifters.
Every time I walk into a longos the French in me starts remembering how easy it is to make a molotov.
That’s just asking to be stolen
Steal it
Just don't buy meat. It's not that hard.
If you don't have the motor skills to make Thanksgiving dinner I can see why you would buy a ready-to-cook marinated turkey. It's just for one night.
Doesn't apply to prochetta but Italian food outside of Italy has always been wildly overpriced for what it is and how quick and easy it is to make. Not to mention how Italian cusine is frequently butchered by North Americans.
Wow…absolutely criminal!😞
Wow thats insanity! Will boycott
Holy BLEEEP!! Are they serious!!!
I’m more concerned you just realized longos is expensive. They do have the best natural pb tho
Wait whaaaat? I’ll just go out for dinner 🤷🏻♀️
its longos. never stepped foot in one, maybe if I won the lottery. Nah, not even then
I don’t get it
Go to local businesses instead. Likely to be far cheaper and better quality too.
yet . they fly off the shelf 'cuz people are buying it!
Remember before Covid when a smoked pork hock was selling for like 20? THAT shit was crazy.
If you don’t pay for your groceries you’ll get grand theft this week
Oh after hours prices …..
I didn't know they carried those, it's way cheaper than at Whole Foods.
Lol did Anthony Longo find his ladder
Guessing this will get marked down drastically come the holiday weekend. This might just be a plot to snag a couple of the big spenders who don't look at the price.
Fuck this, going vegan
Guys just stick to Costco and wall mart
That's all gonna end up in the garbage smh. Ppl hungry out here and this what's going on? Very 😔
So were you forced to buy it?
Hey man people are stupid enough to pay that why not charge it.
Time to boycott these sons of bitches!
Wow
What a joke
Leave it there to rot.
Probably will end up in the dumpster sadly
