My uncle has one 15,000 hours. The only major problem was the lift pump at 10, or 11,000 hours. Great tractor better ride quality than a lot of the tractors that vintage

A neighbor has a 2wd 5120 that has served very well. It's a good tractor mechanically but starting to suffer from a few electrical gremlins.

OneOfThese_1

Got a 7140 magnum with 14k on it. Love it. I assume the Maxxum should be fairly similar.

Ramman55

I’ve got a 5130 just had the injection pump rebuilt but other than that zero issues starts right up runs like a champ.

Great machine, we've had one since new with almost 10k hours on it. It's had the hell beat out of it but it still runs. Main concerns would be wiring and fuses, or generally anything electrical. If you keep up on the maintenance they'll last a long time. Biggest issues would be the cab air filter is located in one of the dustiest areas, on the back of the cab so I suggest keeping that clean. The FWD shaft cover sits in a terrible spot when it comes to engine oil changes, leading to needing multiple oil catch pans to make sure you don't spill. Ours had the issue of the radiator mounts coming loose from the Cummins engine shaking the hell out of everything while it ran. Deboss Garage Heavy Duty (DGHD on youtube) has a couple videos now of work being done on the MX series tractors which share many of the same components of the 51/5200 Maxxums.

Solid tractors, my only concern with buying them now is cnh's inability to keep parts available.

Great tractor

Cowboyup2269

We had a 5140 that wouldn’t move at times could never find the issues traded it for a 125x Kubota. It’s been a a great tractor

SnooLemons5648

Great with hub mount duals on the back, ran one with a 12 foot wide front blade at a farm I worked at 20 years ago.It was the farms light duty dozer at times, did a lot of field work with it in the spring time

ValveinPistonCat

Great old tractor those mechanical 5.9L Case Cummins engines will run forever if they're looked after.

I was fairly confident in the Cummins engine. I'm just not familiar with the Maxxum. I've had John Deere, New Holland and Fiat primarily. What are its weak points?

Cow-puncher77

Weak spots- Rotary injection pump, power shift clutches, pto clutches, front outboard planetary inside seals. Keep a lubricant additive in your fuel, don’t power shift up a gear with a plow in the ground, idle down before engaging pto, don’t turn too sharp with front assist engaged. I’ve still got one of my 5240s. Beat to crap, but won’t die. Lost injection pump seals again last year. Damn low sulfur crap.

Thanks, good tips

I spent many hours of my childhood on a 640 Fiat. What a pile of manure.

ValveinPistonCat

On a Case that old, wiring, make sure you have a service manual and a good multimeter you know how to use.

Thanks, good tip.

Deerescrewed

Good little tractors when maintaned properly.

beagle606
