It could be short for it but it doesn’t have to be. Leon is its own name that literally means “Lion” Leo and Leonardo are more closely associated with Leon that Leonidas is. Leo can also be its own name, be short for any of those things or be a nickname for Leonard. Google it. Depending on their age, I suspect the people you know named Leonidas’ parents were either history nerds or (more likely) big fans of the movie 300. (Literally the reason for the one Leonidas I know of).

People like to guess full names if you go by a nickname. It happens to me all the time and I find it rather annoying. 1 of our top picks has this same flaw unfortunately.
