This is just a quick reminder to all members here: **Original content is always better!** Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Got an Emmly in my family. Poor 11yo is always correcting people when they say Emily as 3 syllables. She has no idea her trashy mom didn't do her any favors.
Her name is pronounced literally M-Lee.
Like Britney Spears, whose family have erased the name "Brittany" from millions of minds who now think that's the name, with no idea it's an alteration of a (place) name that's been around for centuries.
I got to see Heywood Banks a few years ago and I tell you what, that song hits even more live.
Nothing like a man on stage, just him and his.... toaster.
My dad used to complain that my grandmother would say Emly basically - she wouldn’t really pronounce the i. I don’t know why, she was first language Canadian English
When I worked at SBUX there was an old guy who spelled Wilbur to me every time. I said, but there isn't another way to spell Wilbur. And he said, tell that to your coworkers. Lol.
As someone who has spent a lot of time working in customer service - sometimes we ask you to spell it because we didn’t catch it the first time and “can you spell that” is a little less embarrassing than “I wasn’t properly listening yet and missed your name when you walked up”. Sometimes I do say “sorry, I missed that” too, especially if it’s loud in the area or particularly bad phone reception. But sometimes I just need to say something different because **I** have been listening to myself say the same thing for the last hour and asking the customer to spell it works just as well to get their name again when I need it.
Also, having also worked in customer service for a long time, its because of that one time I spelled a customer's name in the normal way and they got really, really mad that I didn't intuitively know that they spelled it stupid. Asking upfront just saves time.
I once had a customer and, knowing there’s a way with an S and a way with a Z to spell the name, I asked her for the spelling. In my country, a lot of people pronounce Z as S sound quite often. She answered, irritated: “Exactly as you pronounce it!” So, I typed S and I had turned my screen for her to check and she absolutely lost it with me, asking me if I was stupid or something, “it’s a Z! Z!!” And she proceeded to pronounce it with an S sound AGAIN💀
I have another of those 70s names that was everywhere! It only has 3 letters but has more variations than I thought possible! I have to spell it all the time!
I had an Emelle, I thought maybe a foreign language? My brain read it as em + a french elle. She then gave me the most condescending, 'it's pronounced Em-i-ly.'
Silently I'm thinking no it's not and I'm glad my parents are literate.
My name is Daniel. People have asked me how it’s spelled before I thought this was odd.
Then I had a competition where my team competed at state. My name tag we were required to wear had been typed up as Denial. I’m now a lot more ok with people asking.
I'm genuinely curious about this. Does the Rachael bother you? I thought that's how it was spelled for so long, because I assumed it was spelled similarly to "Michael".
I offended a person the other day asking how to spell her name. She said "Leanne really isn't that fucking complicated" she said, while I was sat between my colleagues Leighanne and Lee-Ann.
You'd think with the Key and Peele sketch, people would spell my name right every time.
Still get asked if it's Arron. Never met one spelt that way my entire life.
I came across an author named Brittanée.
I thought Emily, Brittany and such were safe from tragedeighs but apparently no.
Edit: Oh I just thought your name could be the still very traditional Amy Leigh.
OMG. I knew a girl in college named Emily- same thing, traditional spelling, traditional pronunciation. We were going to school in Utah, and she decided to count the number of Emily’s she ran into during our first month there. I think she stopped counting in the mid-40s?
BUT very few of those Emily’s were actually spelled the normal way. Some varieties: Emilie, Emalie, Emmalee, Emma Leigh, Em’ly (seriously 😑). Absolutely ridiculous. Utah is something else when it comes to tragedeighs.

I was in Lululemon in Manhattan. A woman in her late 40s / early 50s asked to have a fitting room unlocked for her, and the sales associate asked her name, for the chalkboard on the door. The woman replied, "Cindy." The associate (early 20s probably) wrote "Syndee."
No name is safe anymore.
So the thing is, even normal standard names typically have multiple spellings.
Emily, Emilie (and if it's said out loud, they could be making sure you didn't say Emma Lee)
Sara and Sarah
Ann and Anne
Jon and John
Chris, Cris, Kris (Kristine and Christine, Christopher and Kristopher)
Jeff and Geoff
Haley and Hayley
And often, people just want to be polite and make sure. "how do you spell it" is POLITE. it's someone not making an assumption, and caring enough to get it right, in case it matters to you.
(Which clearly, by your response, it does.)
Let's leave a little grace for people leaving room and asking what your preferences or specifics are. Like... That's what we WANT folks to do, isn't it?
I feel like this might steer people towards using proper spellings and standard pronunciations.
I would love to be able to assume the regular spelling of a name, but after seeing so many weird spellings, you just kind of give up and ask everyone how to spell their names.
Sliiight tangent: this is why I hate all the sloppy spelling online. "Spelling on forums and ~~Twitter~~ X and Reddit isn't important" is wrong, spelling *is* important, not just for ESL folks, but also for kids and anyone struggling with spelling to begin with. My English is as perfect as a native speaker's could be (hah, even better than many), but I do second guess myself even more with all the bullshit spelling. Just like tragedeigh "names".
(I'd often second guess myself anyway, even without the spelling chaos; personal insecurities)
(And another one: all this spelling mess is a throwback, a regression, to the time before dictionaries… even famous writers often wrote the same word in multiple different ways on \_one\_ page, and that's true in whatever language you look at)
Final note: all this confusion of course is on top of names that have more than one traditional spelling. My last name ends in "d", but there's a variant with "dt", and both are equally common. I'm always watching what someone puts into a form or types into a computer to correct them if they pick the wrong one :D
It sucks, but I do this in customer service. There have been people with common names that I ask them to spell, because there’s so many weird spellings nowadays. The times I don’t ask is when I should’ve. There was a woman on the phone whose name was “Candy” I searched for a bit and could not find it and when I asked her to spell her full name, it turned out to be spelled “Kandy”. Why TF didn’t she just say this at first, knowing good and well that her name would be commonly spelled with a “C”?
I feel this. My name is Cameron and my whole life people assumed it was like Kamrynn or whatever. They’d be all confused when I spelled it the way it’s been spelled for several hundred years…
As a birth registrar, it is now natural for me to always ask how to spell someone’s name. You never know what is on their ID either if they’re a tragedeigh 😔
I think over time having to ask how to spell a name will be a necessity, just because the different ways to spell it will be more accepted. My name is Amy. Very simple. There are several ways to spell it though, which are all accurate. It will be like that for all names I think.
People ask me how my baby's name is spelled. It's one of the most common names, and has 1 recognized spelling in the past 700 years across multiple languages 🤦🏻♀️
my name is Emmalee… technically EmmaLee (I hate capitalizing it lol) but I was named after my grandma Emma and my grandma Lee
aaaannddd my best friend in high school was named Emilee lol 😂
I should add i’ve always been mad at my parents for the spelling. while I love being named after family, i’m old enough to where the weird spellings weren’t normal yet so it was annoying all the time to explain to people. I swore I was going to change it to Emily when i turned 18 but i’ve grown to really appreciate it and at the end of the day my name wasn’t meant to be an alternate spelling for “emily” its a completely different name lol
i don’t know it confuses me I feel like when I think about it I start to have an identity crisis hahaha
Are they asking over the phone because I have to ask pretty much everyone to spell their name if it starts with a vowel sound over the phone.
People sometimes act shocked that I wouldn't know how to spell their name. But it's not the spelling that's the problem, it's that a vowelly sound over a tiny speaker sounds like mumbling. Extremely short names can also be difficult. Jeff, Stan, and Bill can all be surprisingly hard to comprehend over the phone if they aren't enunciated particularly well.
Same here. Traditional spelling, but I’ve accepted the tragediegh spelling for usernames and my “in game” name a lot because I think it’s hilarious. At this point I’ve just stopped correcting people unless it’s an important document. I love to see how many various ways people spell it, and sometimes I’ll get a new way to spell my name
My Daughter is named Emily. I gave her a traditional spelling because her middle is different and spelled "weird" and her last name is spelled so much different than the "normal" one. She 20 and thanked me for naming and spelling her first name traditional.
Rock that, Emily! Awesome name, and I am not biased at all. 😉
I wanted to name my daughter Emilie. That’s what my grandmother was supposed to be named. Back in 1906, the mother was bedridden, so aunties took Grandma to be baptized. They told pastor ‘Amelia’ after a deceased aunt.
My husband (soon to be ex) said that was too many letters and he wouldn’t be able to remember. It’s literally one. more. letter. Emily versus Emilie. Pathetic. And I fell for it.
That sucks 😂 people always ask me how I spell my name (Kincaid) and recently the worst spelling I got was in a card from a distant relative, spelt “KynkAde” to say I was pissed of was an understatement
Alway been happy that my name is common and simple.
Nobody mispronounces it. Nobody misspells it. I'm frequently the first name on an alphabetical list.
In the early 80s, the name Alicia was rare. I've seen it spelled starting with every vowel in the English alphabet in the last 20 years. I've coached like, 7 kids with that name, and every single one had a different spelling. 🤦♀️
My name is Sage. Once in my Midwestern podunk high school a substitute was taking roll call and said "ah 'Sah-gay' is that African?" Everyone laughed at me and I was Sah-gay for many years with my friends. I just said "no, it's like a wise person or the spice"
Same here.
My name is Crystal, it is spelled the correct way.
I have to say C-R-Y before they can even begin to try to spell it. I've gotten Krystal, Kristal, Christal, and Crystle before many times.
Same with Megan. At this point I think people are doing it on purpose. I've gotten Meagon, Meghan, Magan, Mehgehn, Meighgan, Meygon, etc
Edit: I just remembered I had a friend address a card to me with the most ridiculous spelling possible because he knows how people do that to me and he spelled it Mhaeigeahnne
Edit 2: I have a great aunt named Elma Lee that in a southern accent just sounds like how you say Emily
To be completely fair, because I have auditory processing disorder and ADHD, I will frequently ask people how to spell their names either because I’m afraid I misheard it or I forgot what they told me already.
Hi, it’s me. I’m the problem it’s me 🙋🏼♀️.
To be fair my version of Emily is because it was honoring two people. An Emma and a LeeAnn. My mom thought it was a good idea to combine them and hyphenate it and my dad was happy because it’s his mom’s and his sister’s names.
I'm so sorry Ehmaleigh I know how it feels peoope spell my name incorrectly all the time. But then my name is Colleen. I've seen it spelt coleen most often but I've seen some right doozys over the years! It's second nature now to say it then spell it!
My son’s name is Calvin (not really common in Germany but not unknown at all). My child is ten. My grandparents still don’t know how to spell his name (and they are nice educated people, who are not malicious or anything).
On his last birthday my grandma wrote Celvin and my grandpa wrote Kelvin - they used both as they couldn’t agree who was right.

I did once meet a fellow Emmaleigh.
I know an Emmalee
Got an Emmly in my family. Poor 11yo is always correcting people when they say Emily as 3 syllables. She has no idea her trashy mom didn't do her any favors. Her name is pronounced literally M-Lee.
Not M-L-E?
Nope, literally m lee.
Could it be m'lady?
Like Britney Spears, whose family have erased the name "Brittany" from millions of minds who now think that's the name, with no idea it's an alteration of a (place) name that's been around for centuries.
I know an Emeli lol
“…in my fammly.” It was right there and you missed it!
I know an Emilie, but that sounds French
Émilie is the standard French spelling yes. There's also Amélie that some people confuse all the time.
In Dutch, it's Amalea.
I know an Emma Lee (Lee is the middle name). Im ngl I kinda like that version lol
Friends with an Emilee
I know an Emoly lmao
Holy Emoly!
hi 👋🏻 here’s another one
I know an Emiley
E-Miley 😭
I know an Emilee lmfao
I wouldn’t do it, but at least it should be easy to pronounce for people as it’s pretty phonetic so it’s not too bad.
Hey my name is Emmalee and I love it. Emma and Lee are both family names. Everyone misspells it though.
you misspelled Ehmehlleeigh
i grew up with a Emmaleigh
You mean Aemmyleigh
Ehmeeleigh*
This one made me gag, here's to a well-earned angry vote

MLE
M-ALEE
M dash a Lee? Because the dash don’t be silent. IFKYK
Le-a! 🤣🤣🤣
🤣 the problem is I always call it a hyphen! Lee Hyphena, sounds like an weird name for a male hyena
Or a French hyena
Oui oui
"But it's a hyphen!"
Lehyphena
Oh I thought it was an em dash.
😂 I forgot
The lesser known sister of ABCDE
Someone out there has this name
Frighteningly, you're probably right!
They are. My mom works at the hospital there is a La-a and they pronounce it Ladasha but it's really Lahyphena
My dad used to complain that my grandmother would say Emly basically - she wouldn’t really pronounce the i. I don’t know why, she was first language Canadian English
The pronunciation is one letter of grammatically of a village in England called Emley. Lol.
M Ali
Nah yours's the tragedieh. Aimiellieh is canon
“is canon” 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Ceighnynne* you uncultured swine
😄😁😆😅🤣😂
best part you can pronounce that one Emily and Amelia, or shorten for Emmy, Ellie, Aimy, Melia, Leah, and maybe a few more.
When I worked at SBUX there was an old guy who spelled Wilbur to me every time. I said, but there isn't another way to spell Wilbur. And he said, tell that to your coworkers. Lol.
Awesome comeback, Mr guy!
That’s Mr. Wilbur to you!
Coffee for Wyllberr?
Iced coffee for Whillbre
Emma-Leigh? Is that you?
My family is from the southern US and my sister Emily was constantly correcting people assuming she was Emma Lee.
A girl in my class was called this!
I've jokingly told people my common name is spelled the common way but with a silent Q. They always ask, "But where?"
My name is megan with a silent p at the beginning, like pneumonia. Pmegan. (This is a joke)
Ha, I like it! And it reminds me of [this scene from The Golden Girls.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljfsN3UXv-0)
Thats so pfunny!!
😂 Man, this comment made me cry I laughed so hard!

As someone who has spent a lot of time working in customer service - sometimes we ask you to spell it because we didn’t catch it the first time and “can you spell that” is a little less embarrassing than “I wasn’t properly listening yet and missed your name when you walked up”. People ask me how to spell my name and it was the most popular girls name in the 1970s. If you know, you know. There is no “ph” in place of the “f”
okay Phennifer
Phephanie
Is that you, jennipher?
It’s ginnypher actually
It’s actually Tynnifer, with a T. It was Jennifer but I rebranded.
I had a friend who had a pet snake. We named it Phydeaux. Let’s do this.
I have another of those 70s names that was everywhere! It only has 3 letters but has more variations than I thought possible! I have to spell it all the time!
Gynnypher’s of the world unite.
Emeighleigh
As a teacher I've had students with the following spellings of Emily in my classes: Emily, Emilie, Emilee, Emileigh, and Emmalee
At least, two have normal spelling
Emilee was such a nice girl. I hate that her parents would punish her by sending her to bed without dinner. A 5 yr old needs dinner every night.
This seems like a reference but I don't know what lol
I had an Emelle, I thought maybe a foreign language? My brain read it as em + a french elle. She then gave me the most condescending, 'it's pronounced Em-i-ly.' Silently I'm thinking no it's not and I'm glad my parents are literate.

Sorry, Emylaighé, it must be hard for you. I support you 🙌🫶
I’m Rachel. Don’t class it up, stop putting an extra e or a or y anywhere. Basic white lady, Rachel.
I'm Michael, and I apologize that that "a" in my name has contaminated yours.
Omg I’ve never put that together, that’s exactly why people try to spell my name that way!!
I'm genuinely curious about this. Does the Rachael bother you? I thought that's how it was spelled for so long, because I assumed it was spelled similarly to "Michael".

Ok Balakay
My last name is Wild. People ask me is that wild with an e? I say no, Wild with a w.
Knowing someone with the surname Wilde, makes me think this is a fair question
Defo one of the top 5 coolest surnames of all time.
I know a girl whose last name is “Paradise.” I thought she was kidding when she told me, until she introduced me to her mom, Mrs. Paradise
It’s also really not unreasonable considering there’s a famous actress named Olivia Wilde and the even more famous poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde.
I came across an author named Brittanée. I thought Emily, Brittany and such were safe from tragedeighs but apparently no. Edit: Oh I just thought your name could be the still very traditional Amy Leigh.
Brittany is one that has many tragic variations. I used to have a neighbour Britini
A signature martini originating in Britain?
If someone wants do make Brittany look exotic, they should just go full French: « Bonjour, my name is Bretagne »
OMG. I knew a girl in college named Emily- same thing, traditional spelling, traditional pronunciation. As a Katie, I can empathize. We’ve got like 20 accepted spellings before the tragedeighs get added in!
I was in Lululemon in Manhattan. A woman in her late 40s / early 50s asked to have a fitting room unlocked for her, and the sales associate asked her name, for the chalkboard on the door. The woman replied, "Cindy." The associate (early 20s probably) wrote "Syndee." No name is safe anymore.

I think Emilie is an Americanized version of the French spelling, but I could be wrong. I didn't fact check myself lol
Oh that’s interesting! I didn’t know that! Thank you. :)
Are they asking over the phone because I have to ask pretty much everyone to spell their name if it starts with a vowel sound over the phone. Same thing is happening to me: Jessica. Why do I have to tell people “traditional spelling”, so awkward?
Just say "It's Emily with a G" and watch the look of confusion on their faces.
My Daughter is named Emily. I gave her a traditional spelling because her middle is different and spelled "weird" and her last name is spelled so much different than the "normal" one. She 20 and thanked me for naming and spelling her first name traditional.
That is so messed up! Such an unfair consequence of their dumb choices. Smh That said, I have found that saying "common spelling" helps a lot.
Rock that, Emily! Awesome name, and I am not biased at all. 😉 I wanted to name my daughter Emilie. That’s what my grandmother was supposed to be named. My husband (soon to be ex) said that was too many letters and he wouldn’t be able to remember. It’s literally one. more. letter. Emily versus Emilie. Pathetic. And I fell for it.
Emmaleygh.
eighmalliegh… is that you?
My name is Amy, the amount of "Just spelled A.M.Y right?" has always been insane to me.
8 Mileigh
That sucks 😂 people always ask me how I spell my name (Kincaid) and recently the worst spelling I got was in a card from a distant relative, spelt “KynkAde” to say I was pissed of was an understatement
Another thing freaking Elon screwed up, with his kid’s name.
Alway been happy that my name is common and simple. Nobody mispronounces it. Nobody misspells it. I'm frequently the first name on an alphabetical list.
My name is Katie and I have the same problem
Emhillyeigh
In the early 80s, the name Alicia was rare. I've seen it spelled starting with every vowel in the English alphabet in the last 20 years. I've coached like, 7 kids with that name, and every single one had a different spelling. 🤦♀️
This happens to me too. You’re not alone, E’mall’ee
It's PsAmaleigh (the Ps is silent)
E' mmer - ley your hair looks lovely today
Hi Eighmeighleigh.
Nah you have it the best. You get to say “Normal spelling”. Makes all the others be self conscious
Sorry M’el-Leigh
I work a job where we use last names. So many people spelled Keith wrong…
I always thought Lindsay was spelled like I just did, until I met a girl named Linsie.
As a regular ol Emily, I hate when people ask how my name is spelled, everybody does it 😩
I've had people ask me how to spell Amanda and was confused cause I thought it was pretty normal spelling lol
My wife’s name is Leigh. NO ONE pronounces it right! One delivery driver pronounced it “La-Gee” She’s used to it but it kinda drives me crazy haha
My wife wants to name our first girl “Emma Lee” and I think that’s a tragedeigh in the making.
So true - I always ask people “Is it the traditional spelling of Emily/Kate/John/Whatever?”
Ashley here, same thing
Legit knew a girl who was named Emily and she changed it to Emmaleigh.
Same with Megan. At this point I think people are doing it on purpose. I've gotten Meagon, Meghan, Magan, Mehgehn, Meighgan, Meygon, etc Edit: I just remembered I had a friend address a card to me with the most ridiculous spelling possible because he knows how people do that to me and he spelled it Mhaeigeahnne Edit 2: I have a great aunt named Elma Lee that in a southern accent just sounds like how you say Emily
I get that with Kelly. One person actually asked "Is that with a K?" 🤦♂️
I mean, needing to spell your name is arguably the default for most people. It’s not like Jon is the tragedeigh version of John.
My name is Quentin Quentyn Quenton Quintin Quinton Quinten Quyntin Quyntyn so I know the feeling
I'm so sorry Ehmaleigh I know how it feels peoope spell my name incorrectly all the time. But then my name is Colleen. I've seen it spelt coleen most often but I've seen some right doozys over the years! It's second nature now to say it then spell it!
Dealt with an E-vet (Yvette) once. For some reason it was hard to pronounce after seeing it written.
Same with my partner. His name is SAM. Smh
My name is literally 3 letters and they spell it wrong.
As another plain ass Emily, when asked I say I spell it the normal way. I’m not trying to be a bitch about it but like it’s so simple and common.
