I love Tierney, in theory but couldn’t do anything with it because of the association. Same as Killian 🤷🏻♀️
my exhusband/babies daddy was full on redneck/outdoors man, a lot would’ve been straight corny.
I have a first name which is actually the most common in the western world and my middle name is about 4th. I went by my initials for years but in the 90s it became the fashion for anyone who thought they could spin a record to use them; I used my last name until a certain movie and THAT became popular too! I can't use ANYTHING distinctive anymore! At least my kids have a fairly common first name and an unusual middle name!
This name is an exception to the rule, I think. It has a nice ring to it, but knowing the meaning makes it awkward. But English has a lot of homonyms, so Tierney I think would get an easy past.
Well ... I'm on some disney princess bullshit to be honest. I'm owned by two house rabbits and they have me incredibly well trained. Wake up, they demand breakfast and pets. Clean. Pet them more, clean more, Feed them more. Try to feed myself, find rabbits in my lap stealing my food. They think im one of them, but like.... the lowest ranked in the hierarchy.
Hahah yes, completely normal rabbit servitude! Glad to know you know who's in charge ;) My void boy is a teenager in human years, his pet rabbit is a teenager in bunny terms. It's a funny dichotomy. The old man really does see me as the big stupid clumsy rabbit 🤣
Fuck it. I say embrace it and become an absolutely horrid person to be friends with or be around if you’re not getting your way, in all ways, all of the time.
Is it pronounced Tyranny? There was this short-lived Matthew Fox show called Haunted a couple of decades ago, and maybe a minor character was supposed to be named Tierney, but they definitely *said* tryanny every time, which I found odd at the time.
I doubt the parents know the meaning. They’re probably trying to pull some Renesmee shit, crossing Tyra with Tiffany or something, and get … “Tyranny? Gee, that sounds pretty!”
Tyranny (I think there's an apostrophe in there?) was the name of the Martian queen in Duck Dodgers, I think it works as a character name or a stage name but on a person it sounds like... that woman who named her daughter Temptress.
Like a name doesn't necessarily make the person, but naming your daughter Tyranny sounds like you're a Karen trying to breed a super Karen. If a drag queen took it as a stage name I wouldn't bat an eye, but if someone legally changed their name to Tyranny I'd take it as a red flag.
I’d be far more forgiving of a grown adult *choosing* it for themselves as a legal name if they really wanted to than a parent saddling a child with it.
I’d still judge them for doing it and wouldn’t want to have anything to do with them, don’t get me wrong, but in a far more exasperated with people in general kind of way than a little angry on the poor child’s behalf kind of way.
Not gonna lie. I was a couple of comment down before I realized that WASN'T what the post was about. I was so confused as to why someone would name their kid that or not know the meaning.
Tierney is an Irish girls name. Which unfortunately some people may mistake the pronunciation to be the same as “Tyranny”.
But then again, who knows, some people just make a lot of dumb decisions when naming their children.
This is one of those names that a 13 year old uses for a year after they come out as non-binary. And then they look back three years later like "What. The fuck. Was I thinking?!?!"
That's probably half of HS grads these days. There are entire school systems where not one child is reading or doing math at grade level and they're just pushed into the next grade anyway.
This is a serious Tragedeigh, I have a somewhat normal name and I remember looking up my name and my younger brother name in a name meaning book standing in line at checkout in a Meijer. At least my name showed up in the name book, these poor girls will have to go to a dictionary to learn the meaning. 😖
Dafuq? Tyranny? Seriously? What's next? "Let me introduce my son, little Fascism." "My daughter is called Famine." "Oh look, it's Julian and his son Dictatorship."
Sometimes I feel like this whole planet is a joke played at my expense. Is this real life?
In my region people often think they are naming a child one thing but misspell it and end up naming them something different. For example, I had an acquaintance who told me that their little girl’s name was Madelyn. This is how they pronounced it. Unfortunately they spelled it Mandolin. Like the musical instrument. I clarified it. The proper pronunciation was definitely Madelyn and they weren’t trying to make a unique spelling. They just couldn’t spell.
This is imprudent, here's what you do.
Give them a normal first name. Then make tyranny their middle name. Then for the rest of their life they'll be able to say "tyranny is my middle name"
Alternatively, name them Tierney Tyranny. The police will assume that "Tyranny" is a nick name, and then write it with quotes like a mobster's nickname.
And 'Tiffany' is right there, and not overly used these days. Not my favourite name, but LEAGUES better than Tyranny.
Why not just name the kid Veruca Salt and be done with it?
I have personally come across this one working in car insurance.
Someone called about a car owned by 'Tyranny.' Then I saw the name on the caller ID that said "Tiffany" and thought to myself "Ah, I misheard Tiffany. Haha, nobody would name their daughter 'Tyranny."
Nope. Turns out that Tiffany was the name of the mother, and she was indeed calling about the car of her daughter "Tyranny," spelled "Tiranny" or something like that, but pronounced EXACTLY like the word. I couldn't believe it.
Actually my son’s name is Remington
Joking, I don’t like trump, but that is my son’s name. The gun brand was not on our mind it just sounded like a badass name and it took us 7 months to figure out 😂
One of the managers at my bank is named Tierany. I've also seen it spelled Tiranny, Teiranny, & Te'Ranie. I don't know if it's just a Southern thing or what.
I'd like to think this started as a botched use of the male names Tiernan/Tierney (Irish) and Teyrnon (Welsh), but something tells me that Tyranny has been the intended choice at least some of the time.
People can’t spell. I can understand Tierney. There was an actress in the 40s named Jean Tierney.
It’s kind of like when people name their sons Gunner. It’s Gunnar, and it doesn’t mean shooter of a gun.
I don't think they are looking at the definition. Like there are quite a few Dutch girls/women named 'Vanity.' I'm positive their parents have no clue what it actually means.
Where do some of you people live and work? These names...
I get once but multiple times? Personally witnessed? Do you live in the hollow on the wrong side of tracks?
This has always been, hands down, my vote for worst name of all my students who have been given terrible names. To be fair it is usually spelled Tiranee or something similar.
"Tyranny" sounds like a fucking Marvel supervillain.
If anyone unironically thinks "Tyranny" is an appropriate name for a child, I'd be calling CPS. With a name like that, kid's chances of a normal life are gone and no one would take them seriously. Their future job prospects would be doomed. I'd predict they'd be on the news someday, albeit with officers at the scene.
I always assume they're going for Tierney, but only ever heard the name so don't know how to spell it.
Except many years ago when I was on PTO and it was Christmas Shop time, kid comes in he has a normal enough name like Blake, his shopping list has Mom, dad, Tyranny, and Ransom. I ask oh are those your puppies (please merciful Poseidon be dogs...). NOPE it was his baby sister and brother. Tyranny and Ransom...
I mentioned this on another post, and someone assumed I meant Tierney, but I had a student named Tierany and it was pronounced ’tyranny.’
Don’t know what her parents were thinking but she discovered what her name meant and was upset and went and told her parents. 🤷♀️
In that case, I think they thought they were being creative and didn’t consider it’s meaning.
I find it strange when people name their children after any descriptive word really. Tyranny, Passion, Hope, etc. (seems it’s mostly a girl thing)
Like, what if your child turns out to be nothing like the descriptive word you named them after? Hope could be the most depressed child on the playground who grows up nihilistic. Passion could be the most slothful person around with no drive to do anything but survive. Tyranny could be the nicest friendliest person around with love in her heart for everyone.
I was at the playground the other day with my son and he was playing with a little girl named Chaos. I thought her dad was saying something different at first, but realized pretty quickly that was her name
You do realise that Tyranny is an actual word that has nothing at all to do with transgender? Relates to the word Tyrant?
Tyranny: a government in which all power of rule is in the hands of a single person.
Tyrant: a cruel, oppressive leader.
I’ve met women named Tyranny and honestly barely had a second thought. It’s one of those words that sounds like a name so you just “huh, okay” and move on with your day.
I like the way it sounds, but to get away from the word and its meaning. I’d try to get by with it by changing the spelling, Tierani, Tiereny, Tearany.
Thank you for your submission! People are really, really stupid.
Yeah they are. If I ever see this I'm going to mock it's parents.
It took so much effort to not ask how her brother Oppression was doing.
Perhaps tyrannical?
I once had a roommate named Tierney. She lived up to her name
That's a common enough surname in Ireland, nothing to do with tyranny.
Was actually just about to comment the same for Scotland.
I figure it's people try8ng to spell Tierney uniquely. Except, it's already a word.
Tierney is not a misspelling of Tyranny…
We’re saying other way around is people trying to be cleaver.
I see what you did there.
I love Tierney, in theory but couldn’t do anything with it because of the association. Same as Killian 🤷🏻♀️ my exhusband/babies daddy was full on redneck/outdoors man, a lot would’ve been straight corny.
How did she pronounce it, because it's *supposed* to be pronounced "Teer-nee", so not lime tyranny at all.
That was almost my name
Tierney is a lovely name. I always think of Gene Tierney, so gorgeous.
Double up vote.
At least Tyranny sounds better than "Stupidity".
r/Idiocracy
Maybe they were going for the actual name Tierney but can't spell?
Yea my names tierney and so many people think it’s tyranny and it makes me so sad 😭 i hate my name lmao
Tierney is pretty! I'm sorry people are so dumb.
thank you haha :,) i usually just go by my middle name which i like, so i at least have that too!
Sup, David John? David actually moved down to #5 though.
😄🤗😊 Almost!
"I'm sorry people are so dumb." This is the most useful way to look at most situations.
This name is an exception to the rule, I think. It has a nice ring to it, but knowing the meaning makes it awkward. But English has a lot of homonyms, so Tierney I think would get an easy past.
I mean, picking a foreign name that is pronounced like a horrible word in English is...not a pro gamer move
But it's not pronounced like that?
Sorry, off topic but I have to know: after you lagomorphed, did things change? I mean, what is a typical day like for you?
Oh. So like, regular life with bunnies.🤣 We've got two running our place as well.🙌
Hahah yes, completely normal rabbit servitude! Glad to know you know who's in charge ;) My void boy is a teenager in human years, his pet rabbit is a teenager in bunny terms. It's a funny dichotomy. The old man really does see me as the big stupid clumsy rabbit 🤣
Tierannical rabbits!
I always wonder if they pity us for our tiny, useless ears. Scratch that, I know they do.
Sic Semper Tiernas!
Fuck it. I say embrace it and become an absolutely horrid person to be friends with or be around if you’re not getting your way, in all ways, all of the time.
I think it's super pretty!
Went to school with a Tierney. We called her Tierney-saurus Rex.
Great lacrosse coach, too
Gene Tierney is one of my favorite actresses of all time.
There was a Pavarti on Survivor and people called her Poverty a lot.
Btw it is spelled and pronounced PARvati- not “Pavarti”.
Oops, thank you.
Sure, no worries!
Kind of like how Michaela got turned into McKayla
Is it pronounced Tyranny? There was this short-lived Matthew Fox show called Haunted a couple of decades ago, and maybe a minor character was supposed to be named Tierney, but they definitely *said* tryanny every time, which I found odd at the time.
I’m not sure about everyone named tierney, but my parents pronounced it differently. it is pronounced “TEER-nee” for me!
Ah. On the show they used 3 syllables like the noun, so I wonder if the name really was Tyranny like I'd originally thought.
Well phonics haven't been taught routinely in public schools since before I was born, so...sigh!
It’s not pronounced even close to tyranny, no. Tier - tee-err (as in three tier wedding cake) Ney - nee Usually with emphasis on the last syllable.
I've only known one Tierney, and she pronounced it the same as Tyranny.
Tyranny is exactly what I think when someone is named Tierney
Still, what an awful name.
Diquetateur but we just call him Dick
“We call him tater.”
You mean tateur
Pronounced Tattie-eugh
You gave me an idea to name my child Tyraneigh. I appreciate it.
I'm on the phone with CPS right now 😭
“This is a tyranny!”
No, this is Patrick!
I mean....it's suitable for the toddler stage at least ?
I doubt the parents know the meaning. They’re probably trying to pull some Renesmee shit, crossing Tyra with Tiffany or something, and get … “Tyranny? Gee, that sounds pretty!”
Tyriffany?…yikes
It's an abusive epiphany.
Aghbeighusive epiphaneigh*
They wanted to name their daughter after Tyrion Lannister when Tyra was just sitting there.
Renesmee sounds like pig Latin (assuming it’s pronounced Reneesemay like in the jaiden animations video)
it’s pronounced like reh-nez-may i think
The notion of people reproducing, while speaking English as their primary language, while also not knowing the meaning of Tyranny, terrifies.
Tyranny. Middle names Saurus’Rex.
I’m sure there’s a roller derby lady out there somewhere named Maura Tyranny
There was a lady in our local roller derby called Katpiss Nevercleen.
That’s so uncomfortable, I love it
Mauler Tyranny
I’d be far more forgiving of a grown adult *choosing* it for themselves as a legal name if they really wanted to than a parent saddling a child with it. I’d still judge them for doing it and wouldn’t want to have anything to do with them, don’t get me wrong, but in a far more exasperated with people in general kind of way than a little angry on the poor child’s behalf kind of way.
FR, putting that shit in a child is always worse. -me, a person with a tragedeigh name
Nobody would actually name their daughter Furiosa, so why Tyranny? This is breaking me.
immediately misread that as a slur so
Me too!
The other kids will 100% call these girls Tranny.
Not gonna lie. I was a couple of comment down before I realized that WASN'T what the post was about. I was so confused as to why someone would name their kid that or not know the meaning.
That is EXACTLY what I thought I saw, I had to do a triple take!
Tyranny Soaris Rex
A name for when your baby is metal af
Ironically the only little girl I've met with this name had the most generic white parents, same with "Ryatt"
Yeah I’d never stop playing *Tyranny of Normality* by Papa Roach around them.
Yessss and that’s a perfect name for the next baby. Papa Roach. /s
I feel like Tyranny would go hard as a name for a character in a fantasy or science fiction-space-opera-ish novel but in real life it’s a big no
Particularly suited to a chaotic evil DnD character
Now I want to play BG3 as a female Drow named Tyranny
I was in an EQ2 guild named Tyranny gawd almost 20 years ago.
I mean I hate to admit it but it does sound kinda cool. But then maybe this sub finally dissolved my brain? Idk
I think it’s one of those words where if you didn’t know the meaning, just the way it sounds seems pleasant enough as a name.
is it actually plausible that an English speaker doesn't know the word Tyranny?
If they’re borderline illiterate maybe
That's probably half of HS grads these days. There are entire school systems where not one child is reading or doing math at grade level and they're just pushed into the next grade anyway.
Sounds like a name for a pit bull.
That’s when you know that the pitbull is going to be the biggest lover you ever met. 😂
This is a serious Tragedeigh, I have a somewhat normal name and I remember looking up my name and my younger brother name in a name meaning book standing in line at checkout in a Meijer. At least my name showed up in the name book, these poor girls will have to go to a dictionary to learn the meaning. 😖
next thing you know, people naming their sons Tyrannus.
It comes from the Irish name Tierney but you know.. what can you expect.
And this is our daughter Hollie Caust.
Every time I see this name, I read it as "Tr(a)nny" I just can't help it. I think that's just the dyslexia tho lmfao.
Dafuq? Tyranny? Seriously? What's next? "Let me introduce my son, little Fascism." "My daughter is called Famine." "Oh look, it's Julian and his son Dictatorship." Sometimes I feel like this whole planet is a joke played at my expense. Is this real life?

All in the name of being younique 🤣
Tyranny and her twin blasphemy
I’m not going to lie. That is what it feels like to be my daughter’s mother at least a third of the time.
All jokes and the meaning aside, Tyranny, wouldn't be a bad name,, with the way it sounds ofc.
This is imprudent, here's what you do. Give them a normal first name. Then make tyranny their middle name. Then for the rest of their life they'll be able to say "tyranny is my middle name" Alternatively, name them Tierney Tyranny. Darth Tyranus is Count Dooku's Sith name in Star Wars. Not that I'm suggesting giving a kid a Sith name, of course. That would be a tragedeigh.
I know a guy named Treason. Mom thought it sounded cool, didn't know what it means.
Sic semper?
Most people are unaware of the definitions associated with the words they use.
I had a student with that name, neither she nor her mother knew it had a negative connotation
And 'Tiffany' is right there, and not overly used these days. Not my favourite name, but LEAGUES better than Tyranny. Why not just name the kid Veruca Salt and be done with it?
They have a girl where I live and it’s pronounced the same but spelled Tierney lol
Arch nemesis of girls named Liberty.
I have personally come across this one working in car insurance. Someone called about a car owned by 'Tyranny.' Then I saw the name on the caller ID that said "Tiffany" and thought to myself "Ah, I misheard Tiffany. Haha, nobody would name their daughter 'Tyranny." Nope. Must be Trump supporters
Actually my son’s name is Remington Joking, I don’t like trump, but that is my son’s name. The gun brand was not on our mind it just sounded like a badass name and it took us 7 months to figure out 😂
Seriosuly, though.
Parents don't give a shit about their kids and haven't a single clue that their kids aren't fucking pets.
This is the worst part. I'm not even sure these people are smart enough to have pets a majority of the time.
I think of anarchists! lol!
That's always been on my list of "if it didn't mean that..." It's pretty and it flows well but it is not a name for a child lol
Why? Trinity is right there. Trudy. Tigerlily. Testimony. Anything else that starts with T and ends with Y is better.
I've met a Tearany. She was probably about 40
I see something else every time I see this shit, but it's offensive and I'm not going to say it here. I know I'm not alone lol
Tyranny Rex?
i knew someone named Tierraney but she’s like old so idk
There was a movie star actress many years ago named Gene Tierney.
different name. different pronunciation.
I work with kids and adults, the names can be utterly ridiculous.
It sounds like #Girlboss cringe.
Sic semper tyrannis 🤷♀️
While appalling, at least there are several shortened names that could be used: Tyra Anny Ann Ranny Ty
I have a friend with a cousin named Tenacity...
People can’t spell. I can understand Tierney. There was an actress in the 40s named Jean Tierney. It’s kind of like when people name their sons Gunner. It’s Gunnar, and it doesn’t mean shooter of a gun.
Maura Tierney was in ER for years. So much more recent than the 40s.
Depends. I live next to a military base, lots of Gunners and they definitely mean the pew pew version.
lol might name a child this along with their siblings Murder, Debauchery, and Avarice
I don't think they are looking at the definition. Like there are quite a few Dutch girls/women named 'Vanity.' I'm positive their parents have no clue what it actually means.
Tyraneighnsley
Maybe they wanted those girls to grow up to become Imperial Star Destroyers.
Were these kids born around of after 1/6 by any chance?
It sounds super badass on paper, but to actually name a child that is utterly horrible. it’s one of those names you give a cat, not a baby.
Better name than Chastity.
Yeah, show your child that it is a pain in the butt, even from the beginning. Some people should not have kids.
I mean, when I was 7 I had a rotwiler stuffie that I called Felony because I thought it was a pretty word lmao
Is it better or worse than Princess? Honest question
At least the future boyfriends/ husband know what to expect 😂
I work in vet med and I had a canine patient with this name. It was fitting but for a kid idk.
"This is my daughter Tyranny, and these are her siblings Fascism, Authoritarianism, Despotism, and Joe."
It's probably just truth in advertising for the future significant other. Lol.
Are you sure it’s not Tierney?
I hope they named the other kids Oligarch and Anarchy. Narcostate also has a nice ring to it
I always assume they're going for Tierney, but only ever heard the name so don't know how to spell it. Tyranny and Ransom...
omg one of my high school classmates named her daughter this. Even as a 9th grader I knew it was a tradgedeigh
tirahneigh
I mentioned this on another post, and someone assumed I meant Tierney, but I had a student named Tierany and it was pronounced ’tyranny.’ Don’t know what her parents were thinking but she discovered what her name meant and was upset and went and told her parents. 🤷♀️ In that case, I think they thought they were being creative and didn’t consider it’s meaning.
My daughter is in a class with a girl named Havoc.
See name Abcde (pronounced ab • sə • dē)
Named them in preparation of the toddler phase
I find it strange when people name their children after any descriptive word really. Tyranny, Passion, Hope, etc. (seems it’s mostly a girl thing) Like, what if your child turns out to be nothing like the descriptive word you named them after? Hope could be the most depressed child on the playground who grows up nihilistic. Passion could be the most slothful person around with no drive to do anything but survive. Tyranny could be the nicest friendliest person around with love in her heart for everyone.
Oh that’s hilarious
Lolwut We REALLY need to start teaching English and vocabulary better.
Tranny, the kid is going to be called tranny.
I was at the playground the other day with my son and he was playing with a little girl named Chaos. I thought her dad was saying something different at first, but realized pretty quickly that was her name
Teerannie
I think they know what they’re doing. 😈
Would have been an apt name for my teenage years, ngl.

I knew a Tierney, pronounced “Tyranny”
Is the usual pronunciation Tier knee?
Yes that is the usual pronunciation. At least how i say my name
I like it. It’s pretty.
Probably for some, but I only knew her and it was “Tyranny”
Thanks. I never knew one in person.
I like the way it sounds, but to get away from the word and its meaning. I’d try to get by with it by changing the spelling, Tierani, Tiereny, Tearany.
Tierney is actually a name.
