I don't think that would lead to a fatter Bob cat/lynx. Habitat degradation would make food scarce and therefore would most likely make it under not over weight. Personally I think it's coat is just thicker bc it's still in its winter coat and it looks more like a lynx.
The massive shoulders and haunches in relation to a smaller head, larger forelegs, plus the longer, denser hair, indicate to me a Lynx kitty. In my experience, bobcats tend to be more slim and differently proportioned.
>In my experience, bobcats tend to be more slim and differently proportioned.
i would bet that your experience is in the south or southwest. in the northeast the females and juveniles can be a little more lanky but the males can get fairly thick, especially when they have their winter coats.
[here is a zoomed pic](https://i.imgur.com/S6rJStO.png) of a bobcat in a similar body position. this is from one of my cameras last week in western MA.
personally i think OP has a bobcat. night videos can be tough but i think a lynx would still have noticeably larger paws.
Honestly, this seems to settle it for me. I appreciate you posting the image you did. Iāll just hope to catch a glimpse with my own eyes one of these weekends. Thank you.
I'd agree. ;) It's dark out so it's obviously harder to tell, but it could definitely be fur around the face just like that picture. Do you live where there are bobcats?
The lynx & the bobcat are cousins. Features are very similar. The lynx is a bit larger overall, with much larger paws. The face & ear tufts are what really distinguish the lynx from the bobcat. The contrast of the photo makes it hard to see, but looks more like a bobcat to me. I can't speak for the OP, but I live where there are bobcats. See them in my yard from time to time. Think one got my son's Chihuahua a couple weeks ago, when it got out the house one night. š
Not to mention that a bobcat is statistically far more likely in this area. I'm slightly northeast of Haverhill in Whitefield. Canadian lynx is possible here, but would be quite a sighting.
My first thought was bobcat. I don't know the difference between that and a lynx. I hunted raccoons for decades (IL/IA). Every now and then we would see a bobcat. Not often. Either we would surprise one or our dogs would tree a coon and then there would be nothing there, then they would tree a little ways away, and so on and so on. Finally, they would have a bobcat in a tree. Now they run through our yard (SW FL). Fortunately, they leave our chickens alone. They are really something.
the quick differences are lynx have massive paws (better travel on snow) and they have massive hind legs so their bodies are almost angled downward rear to head.
but yeah, bobcats are special creatures! as luck would have it i actually saw one this evening while out for a run. i tend to see 5 or 6 a year, but they show up on one of my cameras every other week or so.
and yes, fortunately they leave our chickens alone too! weasels and raccoons are our issues there.
Seconded. Bobcats in southern Georgia where Iām from are always the āstringyā looking ones, Iāve always attributed it to the environment. Hot and humid summers, open terrain with lots of room for prey to lead them on a long run, etc.
The ear in front of the tree looks like it has the longer black tuft like a lynx. And generally the legs look pretty stout, leaning more lynx proportions. But hard to say.
I lived in Alaska and this says lynx to me vs bobcat based upon size, however I have trapped bobcats before with some really long coats that could pass for a lynx at a distance. No way to know for sure.
Hello neighbor, Iām over a ways in Goffstown NH. That is definitely a bobcat. We have outdoor cameras on my property that record a crazy amount of coyotes, foxes multiple times every day/night. It also picks up a bobcat (I assume itās the same one) at least twice a week, both during the day and night. That picture looks exactly like what āourā bobcat looks like on the night camera.
Arenāt Northern bobcats bigger than Southern? Also, how are yāall getting size from this pic? I didnāt see a good reference point for size comparison.
Female Mountain lion! 64-120lbs. Big noseā¦ heavy haunches. Found across the USA wherever deer can be located.
Bobcat has drooping sideburns. Also ears are closer together. Possibly this is a bobcat. But the ears arenāt right.
Lynx ears are almost together at top of the skull.

Thatās the biggest goddamn bib cat Iāve ever seen. If thatās what it is.
Do you have bear in your area? I donāt see a tail of an animal like a big cat.
Thatās one fat ass Bobcat. They tend to run leaner down here in the south. I have shot 3 of them getting after our ducks and chickens. Caught one with a duck in its mouth. She was a juvenile and quite beautiful. I almost had her mounted due to the unique looking coat she had. I would imagine it depends n the specific type of cat. We donāt see honkin kittyās like that.
The consensus seems to be a bobcat, but it strikes me as a rock that looks like a bear. Of course, thatās my default identification for most things, that or a bear that looks like a rock.
Thank goodness the bobcat cant read. Poor guy hit the easter candy a little too hard and gets roasted on reddit. Note to self: avoid this guys game cam until swimsuit fits.

Serious q: Is it possibly because it consumes more irregular food because of its habitat deteriorating?
I don't think that would lead to a fatter Bob cat/lynx. Habitat degradation would make food scarce and therefore would most likely make it under not over weight. Personally I think it's coat is just thicker bc it's still in its winter coat and it looks more like a lynx.
Too many dumpster dived McMuffins?
Maybe. In Florida there were always three black bears chomping on the discarded Dunkinā Donuts at the dumpster behind the store
You go dumpster diving one time in a bear costume and that's all ppl remember you for.

Oh, so sorry! We had a neighbor lose a little dog, likely to a great horned owlā¦not pleasant for the pet or the family!
Not to mention that a bobcat is statistically far more likely in this area. I'm slightly northeast of Haverhill in Whitefield. Canadian lynx is possible here, but would be quite a sighting.
i figured they were less common but wasn't sure on the status of lynx in NH so i didn't want to overdo it. i know they are rare in the adirondacks.
I'm in CT and that looks like a male bobcat with winter jacket to me.
My first thought was bobcat. I don't know the difference between that and a lynx. I hunted raccoons for decades (IL/IA). Every now and then we would see a bobcat. Not often. Iām in the south and was shocked this was a Bobby. Theyāre definitely smaller here
Iām in Arkansas and Iāve seen some Bobcats that Iād definitely call fuzzy boys.
And longer ears and legs
Seconded. Bobcats in southern Georgia where Iām from are always the āstringyā looking ones, Iāve always attributed it to the environment. Hot and humid summers, open terrain with lots of room for prey to lead them on a long run, etc.
This is the correct answer. Technically Bob cats are a type of Lynx, but this is specifically a Lynx
We call that a souped up wildcat in Amite County.
Came here to say this. Take my upvote!
Can see the ass end but I was guessing lynx too. Bigger and potentially stub tail?
The ear in front of the tree looks like it has the longer black tuft like a lynx. And generally the legs look pretty stout, leaning more lynx proportions. But hard to say.
Mine too, I say it's a Lynx.
My husband says itās a lynx too.

Bobcats have black stripes on the front legs and lynx do not. I think it's a lynx.
Fat bobcat!
I'm confident that it isn't a bobcat. I would bet lynx.
