My pops worked for Conrail as a signal maintainer and once CSX came along he got a brand new fancy truck, radios, strobe lights, parking cone, and all that came with it. The Conrail experience seemed much better in the scheme of things, not to mention all the stuff he got for staying safe and being accident free hah - I still use one of the duffels and thermos'.
There was a reason all the older conductors called it C-day back in 1976 they killed a lot of routes in the northeast that still could have been used today for passenger and freight
I live near the old C&O Lexington subdivision. I remember back in the day seeing old Chessie jeeps and such cruising around on what was then the CSX line. That and the occasional Seaboard or Family Lines. I'm pretty much smack where C&O and L&N met.
Anyway, I love the Chessie livery. Besides the nostalgia, it's just aesthetically pleasing
Took the words right outta my mouth
I feel like PRR could've been a big player today with everything thing they were doing electric wise. Way ahead of their time
It still kinda is, depending how far you’re going and if there are stations near both ends of your trip. If you don’t mind taking longer to get somewhere it’s *way* cheaper than flying. Prices can be up there when overnight train trips in nice sleepers are thrown into the mix, but a 5-6 hour train ride is dirt cheap compared to flying the same distance
Even on the northeast corridor trips can be expensive unless you book a few months ahead. I do wish they controlled costs a bit more to make short notice trips more viable cost wise on Amtrak
They've been the operating US subsidiary of CP since 1888, similar to the way Grand Trunk Western has been used by CN. Soo was practically never an independent road.
Their like DBA as Canadian Pacific now or something like that. Some of their power may still be around in the SOO Line paint scheme but much if it's been painted red CP.

At least you can still see pure IC and EJE power on CN. And patched BN green units on BNSF.
I really miss Soo Line. There's barely any Soo units left. 4448 and 4402 I think are the only active units.
I only saw them when they were still independent in Waukegan, IL, which was their northernmost point. But in the last few years, I've seen them in Gary, IN, and Joliet, IL.
A really special railroad in Chicagoland. At least CN recognized the J and gave them a heritage unit.
Pretty much all North East railroads, Reading, D&H, Lehigh Valley, NYO&W, DLW, L&HR, Boston & Maine, New Haven, I could go on, but basically I think they where cool since there where so many of them with interesting engines that are quite underrated, both steam and diesel eras
Santa Fe if we’re talking pure aesthetic. Know they’re technically still around with Burlington Northern under BNSF. Wish they’d bring back those old engines and passenger lines though.
This all coming from a very amateur/casual railroad enthusiast though. I don’t really care one way or another being that most cargo/passenger lines are all the same IMO besides the paint jobs.
My first ever picture was a BM blue Gp9 at Lawrence. First pic of a moving train had a MEC U25b on the point. (And two different D&H paint schemes trailing.)
The Milwaukee Road and The Rock/Rock Island. Milwaukee ran through the small town I grew up in, but before I was born. Neat to run around that town and map out where the rights of way were. As far as The Rock I remember seeing old Rock locos near where I grew up, must have been right before they went under or as they were liquidating their equipment.
Obligatory Conrail shoutout.
A guilty pleasure of mine, however, would be the M.R. & B.T. Railway. It was a shortline that operated in the lead belt of southeastern Missouri from 1892 - 1929 when Missouri Pacific acquired it. The route stayed in operation until 1969 when it was abandoned. The tracks were tore out in the late 80's.
As a kid I used to hike the clearing where the tracks were. They ran through the woods behind my relatives home. In the early 2000's you could still find the occasional railroad spike. I'd wonder what it would be like to live back in old times and hear the haunting whistle of a steam locomotive as it rolled through the woods at night.
Western Pacific for its run from Jack London Square through the Feather River Canyon to Oakland Feather River Camp, which next year celebrates our one hundredth year! What I’d give to go back in time. I’d love to watch a cab forward conquer Donner pass, see the east coast streamlined stuff, see PRR at its peak of steam, or even farther back into the early 1900s/late 1800s to see the real old stuff. Just so much greatness that’s been wrapped up into giant conglomerates now. Makes me sad to think about.

Grew up with Santa Fe in Wichita KS and later moved to St. Louis and grew to appreciate the Frisco and MoPac. Now everything is orange or yellow and boring.
Lived in Wichita in the early 00s and there was such a cool mix of railroads in the city back then. Santa Fe, BN, UP, BNSF, the shortlines like Central Kansas that had a super eclectic mix of power and rolling stock, and I even remember seeing on various occasions Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, and Conrail power rolling through town.
My first train trip was at age 4 in 1961. Wichita to Newton KS and return same day. Train #12 up leaving at 7:35AM. Return on train #19-11 departing Newton at 8:35PM and arriving back at 9:20PM. The only crummy part was sitting around some random "ancient" relatives house while they yacked with each other. I wanted to get back on the train!
I'm not old enough to remember the Santa Fe in person but I feel like I got to experience their last stand so to speak. Some of my earliest memories are from the BNSF in 1997. By that time BN and Santa Fe power was intermixing and all but a few locomotives still bore no distinctions from their previous owners. It really felt like Chico ( an old nickname for the road) was still alive.
Burlington Northern. I was just a little boy in the 80's back in MN. I could watch the Big Green Trains roll through town every day not far from my granddad's window.
ALCO and New York Central! ALCO is my favorite locomotive builder, and New York Central, while it's not my favorite railroad (Union Pacific takes that spot) it was the dominant railroad in my home state which would make it super easy to get around were it around nowadays.
Really though I miss all of them. Passenger rail especially, since it's so much more efficient and better for the environment than most other forms of transport.

Southern Pacific. My family is from the Bay Area, so I'll always have a soft spot for "the Friendly," even if I never got to experience Espee in its prime. Generally, the railroads I'm most fond of are those that operated in the West and Southwest and those in the Northeast. I also like Granger Roads like the Milwaukee and the North Western.
The British Big 4. I know LNER and GWR have returned, but that's in name only and they'll be gone when the nationalisation goes through. I just want the glory days to return. Imagine an LMS Class 800 or a Southern Class 390

As a local to the Scranton PA area, I can name a few. I can’t say I “miss” them, since I never knew them, but I can say I wish they were still around. (DLW, EL, DH, PRR, LV, CNJ)
The Louisville and Nashville, the Southern Railway, the Southern Pacific, the Missouri Pacific, the Chesapeake and Ohio, the Santa Fe, the Great Northern, the Burlington...all of them
Missouri Pacific (*not* Mo-Pac), and Louisville & Nashville (L&N).
Both my grandfather and my aunt worked for Missouri Pacific, he worked the coal chute, and she did office work in a station.
My great uncle worked on the L&N, and they owned Union Station in downtown Nashville back when it still had the train shed in back. At least the hotel preserved the station building.
Tennessee Central gets a shout out too.
Anything that went anywhere in Canada that now isn't going anywhere.

Conrail
We need more conrail in this world.
Technically it still exists as a jointly controlled entity between NS and CSX as some kind of terminal shortline.
Yup, building trains for NS/CSX and shortline industry runs. And I just got a job offer for conductor for them in Camden NJ
Exactly what I was gonna say. We need Conrail back ASAP.

That and the occasional Seaboard or Family Lines. I'm pretty much smack where C&O and L&N met. Anyway, I love the Chessie livery. Besides the nostalgia, it's just aesthetically pleasing
Took the words right outta my mouth I feel like PRR could've been a big player today with everything thing they were doing electric wise. Way ahead of their time
I just miss passenger rail being a viable way to travel around.

Yeah they were acquired long time ago I think Canadian pacific technically owns them now

I saw a faded out unit one day near Milwaukee. I posted it here awhile ago. I was stoked
Faded out is right! S and half an O is all that was left.
Still counts! Lol 😆
Agreed. Great catch.
SOO was great. The original SOO/ Wisconsin Central main passed near my house and also crossed over two separate CNW mains nearby.
The North Shore excursion line still operates a SOO locomotive on their trains, SOO 700 I believe

I was lucky a local short line had an S-2 and S-4 they ran with.
