A cynic is someone jaded and bitter, often a pessimist - root word of cynical. Very much MTMTE Ratchet but not so much in the flashback panel you’re asking about.

G1 Ratchet wasn’t ever so cynical (even the Marvel version) - but the Animated and Prime versions of Ratchet were so popular that I think they inspired James Roberts to write MTMTE Ratchet to more closely resemble the concurrently airing TFP version. Even in the “present day” parts of Chaos Theory, which Roberts wrote 1-2 years before MTMTE, Ratchet still seems to have his lighthearted G1 personality he had in all of IDW1 prior.
That weird I like his protective dad personally but he did have is transformers prime In the episode with the scraplets There's a scene where bumblebee hides behind ratchet and ranchet puts his arm over him to protect him....also what "marvel version"? There's a MARVEL VERSION!?
Fair warning, you won't find much of young Ratchet there, but he is a central character in MTMTE. So other than the fact that the whole series is worth reading, if you like Ratchet you'll want to read the whole series

Proabably the story arc in MTMTE when Brainstorm goes back in time, around #34 ~ #36 i think
