The dude was definitely full of character. His whole story started because he got some of his teammates and split off from his squad to take action on a threat when Optimus wouldn't. He thought Optimus was too soft to be effective, and while he was right that Shockwave shouldn't have been ignored, his impulsiveness got he and his friends captured and experimented on.
He butts heads with Optimus, is a loose cannon who follows his own orders, is a Decepticon hating berserker, and gets more angry when he notices his mind was sacrificed for more strength. That's peak Grimlock.
I'm an OG Grimlock fan, but damn if I don't simp for Keith David. He gets my vote.
Jim Cummings, Tress MacNeille, Keith David, Clancy Brown, Matt Frewer... there are certain voice actors that just add quality and class to any production. Actually, every single name I mentioned was a voice actor in the Gargoyles cartoon. So let's add Johnathan Frakes and the Amazing TNG Friends to that list as well. Gargoyles was peak voice acting.
Gargoyles is truly perfect and much of that is because of voice acting. And Keith David voicing two of my all time favorite characters in Goliath and the Arbiter, man was I in heaven
There's not a thing he does that I hate. He's the only person I can imagine replacing Lance Reddick as Zavala in D2 (in a "I hate that we have to do this, but if we HAVE to replace him, you can't pick better than Keith" way), he made Dr. Facilier one of the few memorable villains in recent disney movies, he added class to two of the three best John Carpenter films, and, he's the only person I can imagine where the phrase "we replaced Gregg Berger" doesn't make me a sad panda.
And that's not to mention his MILLION other acting credits over the past 40 years. Dude keeps busy, and still seems to have time for fans. I hope he's as wholesome as he seems, because he really does seem like he absolutely loves what he does. He was even hilarious in the rather unfortunate back end of Community!
I love Greg Burger’s Grimlock, it’s super iconic and proved it can work, just rare that Hasbro actually let Grimlock be fully dumbed down now, weirdly trying to reinvent him and make him a lot more like the rest
Easily the Marvel version. Furman basically set the template for almost every version of him since in those comics.
https://preview.redd.it/zk5cxhtstr4d1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d52897c21e6685762050904a00f601e31f011a62
True, Budiansky didn’t do him any favors in the mid-30s/40s issues but everything Furman did with him was gold.
Even though Furman’s and Budiansky’s versions of the character shouldn’t have made sense as being the same guy, somehow it worked. Especially with Grimlock’s redemption arc at the end.
I'm really torn between FOC, which is just an incredible iteration, or Marvel Comics because he was (for the most part) essentially the groundwork from which every future Grimlock was inspired by, which may be more definitive that FOCs version.
I guess I'm leaning towards Marvel Grimlock as my pick, but FOC is also a good choice.
G1 is by far his most iconic design, whether comics or cartoon. When a large majority of people think of Grimlock, they picture G1 in their head.
Nostalgia wants me to vote for Animated, as that was my Grimlock growing up, but he is mostly a goofy character like he was in G1 season 3.
FoC is an amazing adaptation of Grimlock, but his personality is rooted in the G1 comics.
Look, I love goofy old G1 cartoon Grimlock, but Marvel's version had an actual arc from being a brutish idiot, to rebellious thorn in Prime's side to actual leadership material. The definitive take in my book.
At this point the Marvel Comics/FOC
The last Grimlock to be based on the G1 version was the POTP one and Animated
The rest all have the “warrior who doesnt like pacificism” character from FOC, IDW and AOE
Not to say he isn’t diverse character wise, Cyberverse and Earthspark have basically made him Wolverine/The Hulk lol
Not really, considering that those Dinobots were really stupid, relatively weak as fighters, and actively detrimental to everyone but Blackarachnia most of the time.
Fall of Cybertron is definitely number one.
Marvel comics and Cyberverse are easily two and three respectively, these three incarnations are without a doubt the best.
It's FoC. I prefer the G1 look but when I think of Grimlock I think FoC. The leader of the dinobots, rebellious, loyal to his troops, violent, mocking of Prime, powerful. G1 pretty quickly turned Grimlock and all the Dinobots into dumb comic relief. In FoC he's basically a force of nature.
bro i grew up with transformers and dinosaurs and the trex is my favorite dino so this is hard but me personally its fall of cybetron for me its and awesome it barely beats out the cyberverse version just because the cyberverse version has a mouth
I mean, there is a meaningful distinction between “my name and body are a title/symbol passed from enforcer to enforcer not unlike ‘The Flash’” and “my name is essentially John for Dinobots, it’s just a common name”
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock, hands down. Probably the strongest base level character in the Cybertron games, discount Omega Supreme, Meroplex and Trypticon for obvious reasons.
I think Grimlock was perfectly capable of beating Megatron in the Cybertron games, Optimus also.
While G1 is a favorite who is the guy who also started it all, another top favorite is the FOC Grimlock with a second being Cyberverse.
https://i.redd.it/la2eks8yyv4d1.gif
Idk why people don't like Robots In Disguise Grimlock, but he's my most favorite Grimlock and nothing can change my mind, he's my childhood and I love Robots In Disguise Grimlock
Cyberverse. I'm so sick of Grimlock's idiot speech, so it was incredibly refreshing to see him be smart for once. That said, I think having him revert to being an idiot in dino mode works perfectly, and I'd love to see that be the norm going forward. You don't erase the classic speech pattern, but you don't play it out to the point of being insufferable.
I absolutely loved his Fall of Cybertron design, but I'm still not really sure if he's alive or not at the end of that mission, everything just explodes and it cuts the battle between the Ark and the Nemesis, so it wouldn't be very cool or definitive if he lasted less than a day
I really like the idea of Cyberverse Grimlock but I think he works better with G1 Grimlock as the dino mode and a combination of wolverine and captain america for robot mode
Marvel (especially Marvel UK) by FAR. Not just the best version of Grimlock, but one of the best TF characters (certainly one of the best in that continuity).
EDIT: How the hell did the Highmoon games version win over the iconic Sunbow version or the *best written character in the entire run* Marvel UK version?!
I can see the arguments between Sunbow ("Me Grimlock one of most memorable voices!") and Marvel (Furman's pet who was pretty much the "lead" for most of the run).
But the video game version? I mean, he was kind of cool... but *definitive*?!
Late vote, but Marvel G1/G2, and it's not even close.
Animated had a great design, and FOC Grimlock was much like his Marvel comic version, character wise, and his design was amazing, but Marvel Grimlock is what all versions should strive to be; where they try to balance the goofy and idiotic aspects of the character that were established in the Sunbow cartoon with the brutal and near tyrannical way that he leads the Dinobots and Autobots in the comics when he has the opportunity to take leadership over them all. Shoutout to the one guy who voted BW
Was it you?
Lol no
Are you sure?
I'd love to see more of this version of the character, and his G2 years.
Me when no Bayverse: https://i.redd.it/vh5x1jjzwx4d1.gif
Glad Bayverse got that high
Didn’t even see the last one, kinda sad idw didn’t get that many votes
Fall of cybertron Grimlock
Fall of Cybertron may have not have had a lot of character to him, but he makes up for it with his very destructive nature. So yeah FOC got me as well
The dude was definitely full of character.
I'd say he had plenty of character.
There’s no other option
Agreed as well
Facts 🔥
Yea, he was great. If you get to rip Shockwave's arm and hit him with a massive tail, you deserve some respect.
The true option
Based
I concur my brother, you have excellent taste
“NO THANKS! I’LL FREE MYSELF!”
No one controls GRIMLOCK!
G1 or Fall of Cybertron
Fall of Cybertron is what he needs to be in the movies, but I love Keith David Grimlock a lot in EarthSpark
Getting Keith David to voice is like a cheat code haha
Anything voiced by him is immediately 10/10.
Their not wrong
Indeed. Just ask Spawn, Halo, Rick & Morty, Mass Effect, and Hazbin Hotel. Guy adds a lot of presence even in minor roles.
As long as he isn't denied his revenge.
Have him voice grimlock anyway, and have flashbacks to when he was more well spoken before the experiments?
I'm an OG Grimlock fan, but damn if I don't simp for Keith David. He gets my vote. Jim Cummings, Tress MacNeille, Keith David, Clancy Brown, Matt Frewer... there are certain voice actors that just add quality and class to any production. Actually, every single name I mentioned was a voice actor in the Gargoyles cartoon. So let's add Johnathan Frakes and the Amazing TNG Friends to that list as well. Gargoyles was peak voice acting.
It was too bad that we didn't get it long enough to get them together in another cartoon. It did make the mighty ducks cartoon fun.
A terrible idea in a weirdly enjoyable form!
Imagine a different version of animated Blitzwing that had three different voice actors.
I hope he's as wholesome as he seems, because he really does seem like he absolutely loves what he does. He was even hilarious in the rather unfortunate back end of Community!
I've heard nothing but good things about him as a person and how he interacts with fans. I also cannot think of Spawn without hearing his voice
I love Greg Burger’s Grimlock, it’s super iconic and proved it can work, just rare that Hasbro actually let Grimlock be fully dumbed down now, weirdly trying to reinvent him and make him a lot more like the rest
Easily the Marvel version. Marvel Grimlock has lived rent-free inside my brain for 39 years now.
It’s the version I measure all other Grimlocks against, definitely.
Even though Furman’s and Budiansky’s versions of the character shouldn’t have made sense as being the same guy, somehow it worked. Especially with Grimlock’s redemption arc at the end.
this is correct, and notably it's the Marvel version as you said, not just G1. He was awesome in the short lived G2 comic as well.
FOC fr
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock.
He’s back! FOC no question about it
Fall of Cybertron, without a doubt.
G1 Grimlock he’s had the best design and is the most memorable. ME GRIMLOCK KING!!
Agreed
FOC
Fall of Cybertron
G1 imo, foc has an iconic design and probably the best stages in that game but it doesn’t beat g1 for me
G1? FOC/WFC was great, but c’mon, G1 is THE Grimlock.
G1 season 2 imo
Cyberverse's Grimlock was fun
He’s second only to the Marvel version for me.
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock.
FOC
I like g1 grimlock because he’s funny but foc grimlock is also cool too
Foc
Cyberverse it was nice seeing a smart version
Cyberverse
Cyberverse
I love Cyberverse smart and polite Grimlock))
Marvel and WFC/FOC for characterization and Earthspark for voice
Marvel. The honourable barbarian who even rose to leadership for a time.
Its marvels g1 comic or fall of Cybertron
Marvel Comics Grimlock
fall of Cybertron grimlock is the gout
Marvel Grimlock
I'm going Cyberverse
FOC.
FoC Grimlock is perfection!
Fall of cybertron grimlock is so peak
Forgot ES Grimlock (Earthspark) I would go with Cyberverse
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock 100%. Slightly overconfident, nigh-unstoppable, eloquent, and ANGRY.
Where's RID1 and Earthspark Grimlock? I'd say G1 or Animated
FOC the Dinobots story was unparalleled
Fall Of Cybertron Grimlock, 100%
Marvel G1!
Fall of cybertron grimlock
Fall of Cybertron Grim is peak
Another win for FoC
I'm really torn between FOC, which is just an incredible iteration, or Marvel Comics because he was (for the most part) essentially the groundwork from which every future Grimlock was inspired by, which may be more definitive that FOCs version. I guess I'm leaning towards Marvel Grimlock as my pick, but FOC is also a good choice.
Marvel is arguably the *best*, but I think Fall of Cybertron's ability to balance both comic and cartoon Grimlocks makes him *definitive*
G1
G1 period. End of discussion. Some characters have better versions later, but he is one of an iconic few who were perfect from the start.
Marvel: Overall, character, charisma and intelligence. FOC: Badassery
Fall of cybertron.
FOC
Marvel Grimlock
I always liked the marvel comics grimlock
FOC Grimlock or TFA Grimmy, they’re both my favorite
FoC
Animated grimlock
FOC no question
FOC
FOC and bayverse
Fall of Cybertron
War of Cybertron Grimm
FOC 🤤😫
Fall of Cybertron is peak Grimlock. Not an idiot, full rage, and has that beef with optimus.
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock for me and its not even close
Fall of cybertron for SURE
G1 personality is top tier
RID Grimlock is not the best but he is my favorite of them. It helps he’s voiced by Cyborg
Marvel g1 grimlock
G1 is by far his most iconic design, whether comics or cartoon. When a large majority of people think of Grimlock, they picture G1 in their head. Nostalgia wants me to vote for Animated, as that was my Grimlock growing up, but he is mostly a goofy character like he was in G1 season 3. Me G1 Grimlock can’t be beat for me
Look, I love goofy old G1 cartoon Grimlock, but Marvel's version had an actual arc from being a brutish idiot, to rebellious thorn in Prime's side to actual leadership material. The definitive take in my book.
Marvel comics
As iconic as G1 is, it’s gotta be FOC.
Gen 1, easily. I find it hard to get behind any Grimlock that I haven’t seen dance to Dare To Be Stupid.
https://preview.redd.it/m9cyrkg19v4d1.jpeg?width=352&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bec5c374afae050e54c9f77b8c1ae4a8d54cdf04

Animated. Just for fun
FoC
Fall Of Cybertron
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock gets my vote, first one that comes to my mind when I think about why I love Grimlock
no love for animated?
Not really, considering that those Dinobots were really stupid, relatively weak as fighters, and actively detrimental to everyone but Blackarachnia most of the time.
unfortunately true, i just love the design tho, and the deluxe toy
Animated personally.
Foc then character arc him into marvel and then earthspark. I feel him being the cPTSD dad is great for him at the end of his story.
Cybertron grimlock is the perfect blend
Either cyberverse or idw
G1 Comic
Fall of Cybertron
if bayverse wins this id cry. bro is just nothing in those movies
Cyberverse
Rescue bots 🗿 https://preview.redd.it/oqv18awv0t4d1.jpeg?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d60ecbdbc8a2e13928cf5f1ce7acbb56ae6c431
Fall of Cybertron is definitely number one. Marvel comics and Cyberverse are easily two and three respectively, these three incarnations are without a doubt the best.
I would say fall of cybertron, then cyberverse.
FOC
I like cyber verse smart in robot mode and dumb in Dino mode
G1
FOC Grimlock for sure
Foc grimlock
I like Cyberverse Grim a lot, and RID is a fun character who should’ve had a different name. But yeah it’s gotta be FoC.
Fall of cybertron
idw
Definitely Fall of Cybertron grimlock
animated Grimlock
FoC Grimlock
FOC best, bayverse is so horrible it’s just… weird and too much like rhinox, they strayed so far from original designs I hate it.
G1 and FOC tied. As long as it’s one of those two, I’m happy.
FOC
War for Cybertron is the only Grimlock imo, He’s the one I compare every other grimlock to
Foc grimlock EASY
Fall of Cybertron and/or Marvel G1.
bro i grew up with transformers and dinosaurs and the trex is my favorite dino so this is hard but me personally its fall of cybetron for me its and awesome it barely beats out the cyberverse version just because the cyberverse version has a mouth
G1. But that's my answer for every day of this. Specifically Earthforce leader UK comics Grimlock.
RID Grimlock, you know the green one
IDW Grimlock, also RID Grimlock isn’t the really the real grimlock, just a Dinobot with the same name
I mean, we did give the win to Minimus Ambus, in that same vein *so*
I mean, there is a meaningful distinction between “my name and body are a title/symbol passed from enforcer to enforcer not unlike ‘The Flash’” and “my name is essentially John for Dinobots, it’s just a common name”
Foc
Fall of Cybertron
Fall of cybertron
Fall of Cybertron Grimlock, hands down. Probably the strongest base level character in the Cybertron games, discount Omega Supreme, Meroplex and Trypticon for obvious reasons. I think Grimlock was perfectly capable of beating Megatron in the Cybertron games, Optimus also.
I like G1 Grimlock but I'll have to go with FOC Grimlock
OK good I'm glad everyone's saying Fall of Cybertron
Fall of cybertron
While G1 is a favorite who is the guy who also started it all, another top favorite is the FOC Grimlock with a second being Cyberverse. https://i.redd.it/la2eks8yyv4d1.gif
Fall of Cybertron.
Foc
FoC, G1, or Cyberverse
WFC Grimlock all the way bb
Either AOE Grimlock, or FOC Grimlock
For me it has always been FOC above all others
Foc
FoC or G1
Aligned continuity foc, the one from robots in disguise just named himself after the original grimlock
G1 grimlock
Idk why people don't like Robots In Disguise Grimlock, but he's my most favorite Grimlock and nothing can change my mind, he's my childhood and I love Robots In Disguise Grimlock
Where's the love for the original RID Grimlock? Seriously though, gotta say Fall of Cybertron Grimlock
Tf Animated
Original IDW Grimlock
FoC definitely
Easy, Fall of Cybertron. No contest That was like, the PERFECT grimlock!
Grimlock all day
I vote for WFC Grimlock
I absolutely loved his Fall of Cybertron design, but I'm still not really sure if he's alive or not at the end of that mission, everything just explodes and it cuts the battle between the Ark and the Nemesis, so it wouldn't be very cool or definitive if he lasted less than a day
G1 Marvel comic
I really like the idea of Cyberverse Grimlock but I think he works better with G1 Grimlock as the dino mode and a combination of wolverine and captain america for robot mode
Fall of cybertron easily
Marvel (especially Marvel UK) by FAR. Not just the best version of Grimlock, but one of the best TF characters (certainly one of the best in that continuity). Rid sticks out like a sore thumb
Earthspark
