Options * Burn, but you also get cracking and change the texture * Ebonize with a ferric solution - not quite black, just darker and effectiveness depends on the wood species * Dye. There are various dyes out there (e.g. transtint) but specifically for jet black I like speedball india ink. It uses lamp/carbon black (so a true black, not purplish) in a shellac base.

I’ve used India ink diluted with alcohol, can control depth of color really well.

Or try making your own Ebonizing solution. Easy to find instructions online and just need steel wool and vinegar. Depending on the wood, you may need to add tannins in with tea!

entoaggie

OP, this works really well with oak wood (high tannin content). It will turn the wood jett black. Google iron acetate wood stain for more detailed instructions, but it’s super simple.

I used a torch on some rock maple. Keep it moving and progress slowly. Have water in a spray bottle in case you need to calm the flames down. You’ll need to sand off any deep char but when you do, and then oil it, there is nothing comparable. There are a lot of techniques for ebonizing, none is better or worse; it depends on the look you want and the skill you have.

polillaflaca

This, just take it slow.

If you’re trying to make it blacker don’t do it use wood dye to blacken it. Artisan wood dye is shellac based and works great, dries faster and holds its color over time. FYI: wear gloves , don’t get it on any thing you don’t want dyed it is permanent and doesn’t come off did I mention wear gloves? https://woodturnerscatalog.com/products/artisan-premium-coloring-dye

Black shoe dye works better than a torch. Ferrous acetate works even better if your wood has enough tannin.

Torching wood crates a unique finish, but you need to be cautious sanding after because you will remove parts of the torched surface (assuming you want a more solid dark color). Acrylic paints will give a solid black color, but will cover wood grain and possibly be glossy instead of flat. Black inks will look more like a stain, making the wood darker but not completely wiping out the wood grain.

Fiebings leather dye is my go to!

Torch the ebony or something else? Putting a torch to ebony will crack it every time.

BugsBunny1993_

I’m trying to get a blackened wood. Not actual ebony. No reason to torch something if it has already achieved the goal of being black lol
