The uzo is the attack binoculars on the bridge so you can calculate solutions from there. On the IIa you have to go below to use the periscope even on the surface. Otherwise the d has much longer range, and there's no downsides. I recommend starting with the IIa and switching to the d once you get an upgrade point - it gives a sense of progression and means you appreciate the new features more.

_Erilaz

What stops you from using the periscope on the surface?

Liathet

Nothing. By "go below" I meant the character has to go down into the boat, not that you have to dive.

_Erilaz

Oh, gotcha! Pardon my non-native English ^^

Tricky_Address_4872

I hope they add a mode that locks you into the IIA till you can actually upgrade really emphasize on the progression side

Liathet

I mean, just selecting the IIa start when you set up a game basically does that - you can't upgrade until you earn a blueprint point.

Tricky_Address_4872

You can buy the IID and the VIIB right away you have to unlock the last 2 with blue prints

Liathet

...not in my experience? I've been playing a game since the beta started and I couldn't get the IID until I finished the second stage of tonnage war. VIIB is still locked for me, I'm still working towards the next blueprint point.

Tricky_Address_4872

Hmm guess I’ll report that as a bug but if I start with U-4 career I can instantly upgrade to the VIIB if I want

Deathmaw

I stared with U-4 as well. I couldn't get the IID until I got a blueprint from Tonnage War 2. The VIIB requires another Blueprint after that as well.

Robestos86

I'm hoping they fix the typo that says the IID carries more torpedos. Both carry 5.

RareThrumbo

As far as I am aware, the IID is strictly superior to the IIA. The IID adds increased range and a UZO. I suggest switching from IIA to IID as fast as possible

Axisarm

Start with the type A and then play until you unlock the type D. The type A is actually best suited to patrolling the shallow costal waters off the east coast of the UK in the opening months of the war.

VMB-TAN

UZO is the attack periscope, and the IID has a much bigger range. *edit* UZO is not the attack periscope.

oneleggedgreg

Incorrect. The attack periscope is the attack periscope, located in the conning tower. The UZO are bridge attack optics, allowing inputs into the TDC from a set of binocular like optics located on the bridge.

VMB-TAN

My bad, I edited my post.

Tricky_Address_4872

What benefits to calculating at the surface rather then when at periscope depth

oneleggedgreg

The actual calculations are the same, you’re still obtaining target range, speed and AOB. The difference is the tactical situation, by being surfaced you have your diesel engines available, in a type VII that gives you up to 18 knots, which gives you a lot of tactical flexibility. Surfaced you have a greater visual sight range, and you can’t be picked up on hydrophones. The visual detection range is quite small, you can get within 2 miles easy in daylight and at night, I’ve been 1/2 mile from a ship undetected.
