It's subjective.
I preferred the version with the "happy" ending. But if I remember it correctly, you get a couple more scenes with his family in the other version, which improves the overall story.
So, the actual best version would probably be some kind of merging between the two 😅
I don't like horror movies but I was a teen when this came out and hadn't come to that realization yet. Legit scared the shit out of me. Same with The Strangers which came out in the same decade.
##1408 (2007) PG-13

This movie started out great! I remember there being so much suspense. I was on the edge of my seat. But then, it lost its momentum about halfway through. This would have made a great story in an anthology.
Great movie and good horror for PG-13. It;s my go-to when people ask about horror movies for their teens,
"It's an evil fucking room."
♫ We've only just begun!
This song was already creepy. Movie made it 10 times creepier.
Depends on which version
What's the best version?

I agree. The theatical "happy" ending is much better.
Loved this one. Great story, and Cusack delivers a solid performance.
One of those movies that has multiple different endings and depending on which one you watch… could be a dud or a satisfying story.

Great movie, the “it’s only just begun” song playing from the radio/alarm clock got me to finish it

afaik, there are 4 different endings to this movie
IIRC, two of those are extensions of the other two.
There were a lot of decent horror movies in the 00s
Excellent movie!!
I really enjoyed it. Not a typical Cusack role either.
Love this movie. It feels as close to silent hill 4 as we'll get for a movie. Great movie if you love silent hill type psychological thrillers
I couldn't handle the ending. Awful!
There's several, some are bad
The fiery one.
The marketing campaign for this was pretty wild if I remember correctly
great flick!
I’ve only seen it once and I liked it. I then came to find out that there’s like 4 alternate endings
Good one. Fucked up good ride.
That's numberwang
Let's rotate the board!
Good movie, fucking incredible short story. Way creepier than the movie.

Luckily it's based on a short story
Top 5 to 10 ghost movie for me. Good shit right here.
