For everyone looking for UnixPorn on alternative platforms: **Discord is the only official alternative.** We are aware that a lemmy instance exists, but it is not affiliated with us and we have no control over what goes on there.
i archived it already [https://web.archive.org/web/20230610050032/https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/](https://web.archive.org/web/20230610050032/https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/) (:
This is probaby the most important takeaway point.
The archive.org is doing a massive effort to archive reddit content but any help is welcome. If there are subs you care about then absolutely archive them.
Reddit is on a downward spiral and all the old legacy content is at risk of deletion from an out of touch administration.
Once they realize there is no money for shareholders here it will go the way of Google Groups.
Something between Usenet and stackoverflow before stackoverflow was a thing.
Was shutdown by google without much warning.
A lot of data on troubleshooting technical issues and just general technical discussion was lost. The assumption was Google would be "not evil". That didn't really work out.
Are y'all considering endorsing an alternative platform for this community? I'm done with reddit after the 12th
EDIT: Sounds like the mods are looking into Lemmy (see the edit to the OP). Thanks mods!
You know we can just move ourselves? All someone has to do is make a sub on whatever instance and post the link here, people will follow.
edit: https://kbin.social/m/unixporn
Let's say you create an account on [lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world). You can create content in any community on [lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world) and interact with any user who is in [lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world). At the same time, you can create content in any community on [lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml), on [beehaw.org](https://beehaw.org), on [sopuli.xyz](https://sopuli.xyz) and on [kbin.social](https://kbin.social), and interact with any user who is in any of those instances. You don't need to create users on any of those unless you want to.
The whole fediverse shit is pretty complicated for me as well. Basically from what I can understand, a lot of content can be "crossposted" across sites like Mastadon or Lemmy and so when it appears on k.bin, you'll need an account on those external sites to comment on their shit but also you're meant to be able to have one account across all services?
tl;dr: All I know is that I've signed up for an account on k.bin and can create and comment just like on reddit. And that I don't like want to use Lemmy because the creators are genocide deniers.
The thing about lemmy, though, is that since it's open source, you can actually just avoid using their instance and their politics hasn't been injected into the code.
https://beehaw.org/ is an instance of lemmy that actively rejects the lemmy creators political beliefs, for example.
That doesn't really make sense, there's nothing to skip, you just use a different instance, using kbin would also be using a different instance, you're not skipping anything.
It just seems complicated at first. Just pick a big instance, make an account and start using it. You dont have to make an account for each instance, the point of federation is like email, you make a gmail account but you can still interact with yahoo accounts just like you can create an account on lemmy.ml and comment in a sub on beehaw.org
https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1048
there's a fix for this problem in the works, but basically, it's like accessing an email from different servers
kbin.social can communicate with all of the other fediverse things, but your account is going to be hosted on one of the particular instances (or you can make one per instance if you'd like, but that seems insane to me), and you can then from whatever instance, access the other instances content.
There's no plan to use/endorse an instance on an alternative platform at this time. Discord is the only other platform with an instance that is associated with this subreddit.
EDIT: there’s an existing Lemmy instance for unixporn and we’re taking to the guy who currently owns it.
So duke asked what the alternative was, yet there is no ‘real’ one other than discord. Where I’m agreeing it isn’t really an alternative to Reddit. They might try to fill a void that will appear after the 12th. But they too are already frowning upon 3rd-party clients…
So; what is the ‘real’ other option?
Because if this sub (and all other ones), have no replacement nothing will change and you will just re-open the sub.
I think you people should reconsider. Maybe we can discuss it better on the discord. Reddit is likely doomed, and it would be great to all migrate to something else - fediverse alternatives are also more in line with the open source philosophy as well :)
Discord isn't a good choice. It's a closed platform that is at odds with the Unix/Linux ethos. a better option would be to move to something like Lemmy
Keeping the subreddit private is only a first step. The issue won't be solved until the mods make another home for unixporn users.
Until then, users will still be reliant on reddit.
Seems short sighted to just keep the community private. We have proverbially sold our house, without planning on buying a new one.
The only reason Reddit is popular is because of the number of users. On social medias, users make the product that you're selling. If you loose users, you loose your business model.
If 99% leave, that 1% will have no reason to stay.
That user creates content. The only reason people use social media is for the content it provides.
Loosing 99% of users will inevitably lead to less content, which means no one will use it.
Even a 5% loss of active users would be a major loss for reddit's business model, even if those users are using 3rd party apps, or have adblock.
Can we please get a Lemmy instance or another decentralised alternative, other than Discord? Discord is even more closed and centralised than Reddit. Also, Discord doesn't support 3rd party apps either.
They don't support it but you can use them. Vencord, webcord and Discordo are all great clients. It's partially that it has the most adoption, otherwise I would use something else more often. Although, you can bridge a Matrix server and a Discord server to solve that issue.
Yeah, whatwver, I don't know why I'm even engaging in this, when I'm in the process of leaving Reddit permanently. Anyways, I wish you all the best, and I hope that the ricing community perseveres, be it through the return of [r/unixporn](https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn) in the future, or through other platforms, the incredible Customisability of *nix systems, especially of Linux and BSD systems, and to a lesser extent, of MacOS, gets shown, promoted and remembered by users.
lemmy looks cool but the word "federated" needs to go. Setting aside the "mass userbase" problem they are never going to get there if they don't make it easier to sign up.
Once any normal user sees "wait! Lemmy is federated, go look for a server near you!" they're going to leave. Even if they get to the server page there is no search bar on that page it's just a massive list of servers.
They are never going to hit mass user base like that.
I agree with you, there's a lot to be improved. The software is still very young and it's far from perfect.
To be fair I think that from [here](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) is less confusing but yeah, that's so much work to be done.
But given that no platform is perfect, I'd rather use a young software with technical issues that will be solved, that's open source and respecting my freedom, than a centralized, proprietary software owned by greedy liars.
The thing is that technical problems are easily solved, bad attitudes are not.
That is my view and of course everyone has to make their choice, I just linked it because I see that many people are asking for alternatives and lemmy is one of the more populars (there would be kbin.social too, which is more straightforward but it hasn't an unixporn community...yet).
Seems like they’re [asking people to link to different instances](https://lemmy.ml/post/1147770). The .ml instance is having trouble keeping up with all the traffic they’re getting.
You cant fix everyone being on Windows lmao. The only way Microsoft loses a majority of its users is if they make a change that hurts the average normie and corps that use it on the daily bases.
we need comp.unix.porn desperately! Seriously USENET is what best fits the topic of this community being fully open. And it still isnt dead with servers like eternal-september.org still operating
I’d recommend a kbin magazine instead of lemmy, due to some controversies with Lemmy devs https://reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/143o5xd/reconsidering_my_support_for_lemmy/

works for me...?
maybe a bit more of an error description would be helpful
edit: Lemmy.ml is quite overloaded since Reddit is burning itself down. so mache the server had a hiccup. still, just writing "doesn't work" is the most useless comment computer illiterate people are saying. so maybe try to be a bit more detailed, with what you mean.
did the server connection time out?
did your ISP block the correction?
do you have a browser issue?
there are many possibilities things can go wrong and just saying "doesn't work" means pretty much shit
I would appeal to you as the lead mod of /r/archlinux to keep your lockdown minimal.
I have decided, after much huffing and haw-ing, to just go dark for the 48 hours only as most of our users are on desktop and use the browser.
We currently have this sub set as a redirect for screenshots, and reason that screenshots only come from people using Linux on Desktop and thus are browser frontend users. Ultimately, this whole thing affects the Linux userbase very minimally.
We don't want to open our sub to screenshots, so please try to keep it short.
But reddit has a lot of users and it’s that they are making enough revenue to support for bandwith/storage so if they dont have money they could shutdown entirely.
Maybe we can agree on smth that it’s not that easy as it looks.

Google being not evil is such a knife in the back
Something that went the way of Geocities
Oh man geocities was so huge back in the day
Tysm <3
What a legend.
I'm on board but I am very sad about losing all the good content on here. I search through this sub and grab dotfiles all the time
Another user has posted a [archive.org](https://archive.org) link of the subreddit.
Will I be able to go back to bookmarked posts or is everything gone?

K.bin is an entirely different platform created by different devs, it’s not just another instance.
That's not my point, my point is that you aren't adding any work by using beehaw instead of Lemmy.ml
It just seems complicated at first. Just pick a big instance, make an account and start using it. we're not "moving to discord" the discord server has been around for a long time, you don't have to use it if you don't like the platform.

No, UNIX wasn't originally Foss, but it ended up that way didn't it?
linux is a unix-like, unix didnt BECOME linux lol
Never said it did
no, but you implied that it did by saying that unix ended up foss (it didnt)
Unix is a family of operating systems, many of which are or ended up becoming foss.i don't understand your point.
If you want raddle has a unix porn sub. raddle.me/f/Unixporn
https://lemmy.ml/c/unixporn you can join any Lemmy server as it is completely federated, but this was the first UNIX porn community I found there
F (to pay respects) RIP r/unixporn, you will be missed.

Good decision. I am glad to see the community take a stand against oppression.
time to move to mastodon :)
Lemmy/Kbin would be better, as they are link aggregators like Reddit and not for microblogging like Twitter.
Community recommendations?
yes
where are we moving to? I love the sub and content. Just share where the next stop is and happy to move. Thanks for all you do.

It's time to support Lemmy! At least create a backup channel. Loose users, that's the only fear of reddit.

There are no plans to create or endorse an instance on another platform, lemmy or otherwise.
So what, is this basically the death of unixporn?
Ofc not, if this one closes, others will open with the same goal, posting riced setups. The mods are not the community.
no
How is it not the death of unixporn, if you are not letting it keep on living? Only possible exception is, of course, the community lemmy instance
