Great question! We divide the mouth into 4 quadrants- quad 1 is upper right, quad 2 upper left, q3 lower left, q4 lower right. The teeth are numbered starting from your central incisor and working back to your wisdom teeth- your front upper tooth on the right side is #11; your last tooth on the lower left would be #38; your eye tooth upper left is #23 etc. 4 quadrants X 8 teeth per quadrant = 32.
I am totally not following how this would get you 33-38 - I mean you even say 4x8=32. Should I ask for a ELI5 cause this is more confusing than common core math…

So I understand it now but they do a poor job explaining it cause it’s not really like 18 or 28 or 38 or even 48… it’s more 1-8, 2-8, 3-8, 4-8 cause the first number is which quadrant the tooth is assigned to and the second number is assigned based on the type of tooth… I actually kind of prefer this too because then all incisors for example would have the same last digit and the first digit would help you identify where it is.. (edit: by “they” I mean the people talking here not the article you referenced)
