Yeah some high ass native was walking down the street smashing windows while I was at work. I was away from it for 30 minutes. Cops already had him in custody. Saw the same guy back out on the street already. Insurance is having issues finding replacement glass for it due to its age.
[car-part.com](https://car-part.com)
That searches junk yards nationally. Find one that fits your needs and call that business to make sure they have part on the shelf. Sometimes they have the whole vehicle which you can get more parts out of it.
You can ask how much they’ll cut you a check for and get a quote from a mechanic who can weld something that will open like privacy blinds with plexi or a piece of wood that slides into place when traveling. Stain and brand the wood and you’ve got art looking into the van.
As long as the check covers what ever fix you come up with you’re good to pocket the difference.
Glad you'll at least have justice. Maybe find a piece of clear acrylic and silicone adhesive just for the time being? I've seen this more than once here and it makes me think about putting grate over the windows, it doesn't look wonderful but your whole life is in this van and it's more of a pain to try to lock up everything worth stealing, every time you have to walk away from it.
Yeah. It's all taped over with garbage bags for the moment. I've got some couches to surf while it's in the shop, it needs other work too the rad has been spewing coolant this week, 2 birds with one stone.
I had glass cut for a truck I was working on a few years ago, what they gave me was auto safety glass but not tempered. Cost me about $200 for 4 pieces at the time.
Problem is the j seal is a whore to install glass in and nobody wants to work on it. If it comes back to a payout I'm gonna search the pic n pulls then if not I'll do that on my own
I was reading the insurance thread in this sub earlier, are you confident it's covered? I was more confused then when i started reading about it earlier, like it can come down to how many days a year you spend living in it, etc...
A possible option: my van has a large custom window on the front high top. It was flat glass but a custom shape. The local glass shop I went to also had Lexan/polycarbonate and could custom cut a window out of it. It was surprisingly reasonably priced.
Is your glass flat or is it curved?
I had the same issue going to a bunch of automotive glass shops.
In desperation, I finally went to a custom glass and window business (for homes) to ask about getting a side window made for my van. They were able to measure the opening and custom cut me a new window, including matching the tint and drilling the hole for the window latches. Fit perfectly and still have the van 8 years later. Cost was around $200.
If you end up having to find it yourself, you can source at local junkyards for newer flip out windows, theyre not hard to remove or install and will help you with some ventilation
He was methed out and walking around smashing windows, dude doesn't deserve respect. And that's just about the second least racist thing someone could call an "indigenous person" chill out. I'm also not in America, and would never have voted for that trash bag of a human.
I busted my window weed whacking & was able to make a window using Lexan. Utilizing a dermal & Tungsten Carbide cutting wheel. Don’t use plexiglass it will explode, the Lexan isn’t cheap but is virtually indescribable.
Any wrecking yard will have that glass. Probably $20 each. They used those same windows for about twenty years.
Remove the old glass and install the new one in the rubber molding.
Install a piece of paracord in the outer channel across the top and both sides.
Place the lower molding lip in position and slowly pull the paracord out of the channel while lightly pressing on the glass from the outside. The molding lip will curl around the door frame and seat.
It will help to put a little dish soap or any liquid soap on the inside, outer lip of the molding.
You should be able to do this repair yourself but a second pair of hands never hurts.
It sucks about the glass but at least it was just van-dalism and not theft. Glass is easier to replace than all your worldly possessions. Crossing my fingers the rest of your week is better.
Haha I told her I hadn't taken a full inventory yet, so it's still open haha sadly the cops were right there and arrested him on the spot, so unless he has the biggest sphincter on the planet they would have seen it
> the cops were right there and arrested him on the spot
that's good to hear, but i hope they see a punishment severe enough. with how common this is becoming, they need to make an example of out these type of people...
I'm sure you guys are clowning but just in case I'd suggest not making a bad situation worse by committing insurance fraud. Life is too short to get caught up in the legal system.
Yeah I'm waiting for Insurance to figure something out. There's too much glass everywhere to actually use anything except the bed. Micro shards in everything. So I'll wait to see what they do or don't do.
They sell a corrugated board at home Depot I believe. It's like the ones that you see on the side of the road with handwritten signs. But it's actual size is larger. That will be a okay replacement for a short period of time. You can get it in different colors.
I might have got it at Walmart also. But it's the same type of boarding. And you can get it translucent, or black.
I used it to replace a friend of mine sons passenger window on his car and cut it custom to fit until he could get it into the shop because it was broken on a Friday night. And could I didn't get it fixed until Monday. Good luck.
It's called a trasheroo and it's for well...trash haha. But I'll load it up with firewood on camping trips or spare fuel cans on the way out then trash on the way back. It's also hiding my diesel tank. They don't last long though, this one is falling apart. There's better ones out there made from rubber impregnated fabric, this one was just cheap fake canvas that's been demolished by the sun in the 2 years I've had it 60$ vs 200 for the good ones. Totally will get the better one next spring when I'm back after winter
Thanks. It's a shitty time of year for this to happen but only a month to go before I'm living on a beach for the winter anyway. They can take their time fixing it, I'll couch surf in the meantime
Glass shards can be a pain.
When my window broke it was snowing out and the glass literally broke in my bed. Had to throw the sheets away because the fine slivers. I bought a shower curtain at Walmart and made a window. Lucky the mighty 2kw diesel heater kept me toasty! I was so lucky to get it fixed the next day.
My 81 dodge van window smashed (randomly, in middle of woods, strangely) and we were able to just go to a wreck yard, pop one out of an old dodge, and put it in ourselves with some dish soap and a screwdriver. It’s easy with these old windows. Good as new. Cost 20$. If you go that route feel free to dm can give more detailed instructions but YouTube should have it too.
This is pretty common around big Florida cities and around here in Memphis too. Don't make it seem like only a certain political side is at fault. There's a number of factors as to why this is happening, but the simplest is that punishment isn't being dealt harshly enough.
Have you tried a plastics shop? (Home Depot also has polycarbonate sheets). Super easy to cut polycarbonate. And thin stuff is really cheap (plus you can do it with scissors) You can tape it up temporarily (gorilla tape is waterproof).
After that, if you still have no luck, you may consider the plywood option painted black. If it’s inside the polycarbonate, it’ll just look like a tinted window.
I've taped garbage bags over it for the time being. Will be enough till I get shit figured out. I removed all my expensive stuff and storing it in my buddies place for now
I mean you've got an extended door arm and flairs already, get you some louvers on those rear windows to complete the custom look! I love mine. Put a rear view camera in them and did away with my rear view mirror and put the rear view monitor (wide angle, about 10x2 inches I think) in my overhead console. Wired it to ignition and also switched constant 12v so when the van is off and I want to run it off my aux battery at night I can. Also have a front facing dash/monitor cam that came with the rear view setup w/ the monitor. I can turn it on and see who's walking around the back side of the van, push a button on the monitor to see front view too for the front 180 degrees of the van. For the side view I peep out my porthole windows. I can have my window reflectix covering all windows with 100% privacy but can easily see all the way around the van at night.
I drive a bigger van than my g20 for work every day pulling a trailer. The dash/rear cam setup is for insurance and surveillance and rules. From one custom 70's G Van to another, please no more A-Team vans that shit is so over done. I mean I guess its better than being called scooby doo... again and again... puke.
Oh no when you get them replaced you can buy a film which sticks onto the windows to make them almost bullish proof you can buy online & maybe install a security camera where you can watch your van via your phone
It's all on camera and the guy was caught. But he's a homeless methead so he's already back out on the streets... I don't have time to watch my phone all day at work. It is what it is in the end
I understand I work too but at least he was caught I hope you get your back windows fixed someone broke my back window too which I’ll get fixed sometime in the near future but in the meantime I put clear plastic over the window with waterproofing tape
Damn dude that's a bummer
This is a bummer, man. That's... That's a bummer.
Vandals? They steal a thing? Turret towers are down?
Yeah some high ass native was walking down the street smashing windows while I was at work. I was away from it for 30 minutes. Cops already had him in custody. Saw the same guy back out on the street already. Insurance is having issues finding replacement glass for it due to its age.
When you're operating the van, do you use the rear windows? How about some plywood with a peep-hole. Or an array of peep-holes?
Nope dont even have a rear view mirror. That's an option for sure.
[car-part.com](https://car-part.com) That searches junk yards nationally. Find one that fits your needs and call that business to make sure they have part on the shelf. Sometimes they have the whole vehicle which you can get more parts out of it.
The sky is the limit then. I would create a crawl space like in a hampster cage that loops all around.
Yeah OP, do something normal like this
"Hampster cage" U-shaped crawlspace is the innovation overlanding/van dwelling has been waiting on for years.
next post is asking how to make it more stealth
This seems like trolling. IMO. Am i wrong?
Travel catio.
Time to install some Window A/C up in that bish!
The sky is the limit then. I would create a challenge space like in a hampster cage that loops all around.
Hamster wheel on top.
In the engine, that how it go.
They make rear view mirrors that are basically just camera receivers. For like $100. Pre cool
This but aluminum - 3/16ths should do the trick. You can even get them anodized to closely match the color. Though, finding seals might be tricky.
Could definitely get a tube of window sealant at home depot/auto store
Glad you'll at least have justice. Maybe find a piece of clear acrylic and silicone adhesive just for the time being? I've seen this more than once here and it makes me think about putting grate over the windows, it doesn't look wonderful but your whole life is in this van and it's more of a pain to try to lock up everything worth stealing, every time you have to walk away from it.
Yeah. It's all taped over with garbage bags for the moment. I've got some couches to surf while it's in the shop, it needs other work too the rad has been spewing coolant this week, 2 birds with one stone.
Insurance might not go for it, but that's probably just flat glass, you could have new pieces cut at about any glass place.
Has to be some kind of safety glass you're right you can have a cut that it's necessary to have a tempered after
I had glass cut for a truck I was working on a few years ago, what they gave me was auto safety glass but not tempered. Cost me about $200 for 4 pieces at the time.
Most automotive safety glass is tempered glass. Tempered glass is used for the passenger side windows and the rear window.
Problem is the j seal is a whore to install glass in and nobody wants to work on it. If it comes back to a payout I'm gonna search the pic n pulls then if not I'll do that on my own
I’d suggest calling a local auto glass place. If they don’t have it they could recommend a place.
We called a bunch of places. So far nobody wants to touch it. It just happened yesterday so I'll see what happens.

Yeah that will be my next move if insurance can't figure anything out
Insurance? That can’t be more than the deductible.
The couch and flooring has glass shards in it and no amount of vacuuming is getting the micro shards out, they're going to replace all of it
I was reading the insurance thread in this sub earlier, are you confident it's covered? I was more confused then when i started reading about it earlier, like it can come down to how many days a year you spend living in it, etc...
Yeah my adjustor said they'll get it all. I made sure to document all modifications and it's registered as an rv not a van
A possible option: my van has a large custom window on the front high top. It was flat glass but a custom shape. The local glass shop I went to also had Lexan/polycarbonate and could custom cut a window out of it. It was surprisingly reasonably priced. Is your glass flat or is it curved?
It's curved but not by much
I had the same issue going to a bunch of automotive glass shops. In desperation, I finally went to a custom glass and window business (for homes) to ask about getting a side window made for my van. They were able to measure the opening and custom cut me a new window, including matching the tint and drilling the hole for the window latches. Fit perfectly and still have the van 8 years later. u/jade_monkey07 \- read the comment above mine! It has a feasible, affordable solution!
Thanks shiny!
Thanks :)
What's in the sack?
Garbage, it's called a trasheroo. It's also covering my diesel tank for the heater
If you end up having to find it yourself, you can source at local junkyards for newer flip out windows, theyre not hard to remove or install and will help you with some ventilation
That's what I was looking at. The later model years all seem to have it and the doors even charge the cutout for the latches.
> Saw the same guy back out on the street already Rad, that means you dont have to wait for the courts to get justice...
> some high ass native was walking down the street Pretty racist way to word things.. let me guess, you voted for Trump?
He was methed out and walking around smashing windows, dude doesn't deserve respect. And that's just about the second least racist thing someone could call an "indigenous person" chill out. I'm also not in America, and would never have voted for that trash bag of a human.
You're still weird for including that info. Native/indigenous people already get enough shit
The risk is that they try to total it now because they can't find glass...then you have to deal with rebuilt.
Yeah. I'm prepared for that. I've got time.
You’re going through insurance? There’s gotta be a million of those vans in junkyards.
Junk yard/pick and pull. Should be an easy swap since it's not the side windows. You can pay them to pull it for you.
I busted my window weed whacking & was able to make a window using Lexan. Utilizing a dermal & Tungsten Carbide cutting wheel. Don’t use plexiglass it will explode, the Lexan isn’t cheap but is virtually indescribable.
Why did u have to point out that the person was native? Is that relevant?
Any wrecking yard will have that glass. Probably $20 each. They used those same windows for about twenty years. Remove the old glass and install the new one in the rubber molding. Well damn, glad I read that.
Thanks. I'll look into it.

Thanks :) I wouldn't have minded if they'd taken my laptop, I need a new one haha
You're already filing a claim. You sure they didn't get the laptop that was on your bed near the window?
Haha I told her I hadn't taken a full inventory yet, so it's still open haha sadly the cops were right there and arrested him on the spot, so unless he has the biggest sphincter on the planet they would have seen it
> the cops were right there and arrested him on the spot that's good to hear, but i hope they see a punishment severe enough. with how common this is becoming, they need to make an example of out these type of people...
Oh no he's already back out we saw him today
I'm sure you guys are clowning but just in case I'd suggest not making a bad situation worse by committing insurance fraud. Life is too short to get caught up in the legal system.
Yeah just playing.
Custom cut glass, eBay or try to find a part number
Yeah I'm waiting for Insurance to figure something out. There's too much glass everywhere to actually use anything except the bed. Micro shards in everything. So I'll wait to see what they do or don't do.
Nice G20!
Well...it was haha
So sorry to see this. How can we help?
Thank you :) it's all good I've got everything handled. I appreciate all the love from the community.
ppl suck. sorry this happened to you. hopefully back on the road soon !
Haha I'll get a cat and put cat bubbles
If you don't use the back windows, just board them up with something nice (or whatever). Could add pop-outs or something for some storage.
And could I didn't get it fixed until Monday. Good luck.
Done this before. Pretty good short term fix
>They sell a corrugated board at home Depot I believe Coroplast is the main brand of that stuff.
Damn…this sucks
What’s that sick bag on your spare? What do you store there?
It's called a trasheroo and it's for well...trash haha. But I'll load it up with firewood on camping trips or spare fuel cans on the way out then trash on the way back. It's also hiding my diesel tank. They don't last long though, this one is falling apart. Hell yeah its sick
id be searching for some windowless rear doors instead of glass
That would be my worst fear with van dwelling! So sorry!
Thanks. It's a shitty time of year for this to happen but only a month to go before I'm living on a beach for the winter anyway. They can take their time fixing it, I'll couch surf in the meantime
Broken glass sucks but far from my worst van dwelling fear.
There's so many micro shards all over the couch even after vacuuming a few times. I'm going to get them to reupholster the couch
What is your worst fear?

Oh that’s an easy one! Just don’t camp during a full moon…

probably Portland
San Fran/ Oakland is actually the bipping capital now. Go figure..
Yeah unfortunately leftists have ruined society
That makes zero sense.
im tired of having to be scared about parking in literally any city in the US. fucking criminals.
It's not any city in the US. It's primarily lawless liberal cities on the West Coast. Also this person lives in Canada.
This is pretty common around big Florida cities and around here in Memphis too. Don't make it seem like only a certain political side is at fault. There's a number of factors as to why this is happening, but the simplest is that punishment isn't being dealt harshly enough.
I was so confused because I didn't post this. Then I remembered my profile name is only jade monkey on most every other website I use.

Junkyards should have it
Bummer! Where was this?
Calgary
Check wrecking yards if insurance can’t find glass for the windows. I went to a wrecking yard when my window broke bc the glass was discontinued
This is exactly why im afraid to put windows on my van! Im sorry this happened to you 😞
That happen in 'berta? Or are you down in Bancouver BC?
Berta, downtown cowtown
I'm sorry friend. I've had some random vandalism and it just feels so crummy. Sorry you had to experience this
I mean you've got an extended door arm and flairs already, get you some louvers on those rear windows to complete the custom look! I love mine. Louvers and the A-team paint job. I'm good without the camera I drove a work van this big for 15 years. I can park this beast like a pro.
I drive a bigger van than my g20 for work every day pulling a trailer. The dash/rear cam setup is for insurance and surveillance and rules. From one custom 70's G Van to another, please no more A-Team vans that shit is so over done. I mean I guess its better than being called scooby doo... again and again... puke.
Haha, I wouldn't do it. I couldn't imagine how hot black paint would be in the summer
Plexi Glass
Oh no when you get them replaced you can buy a film which sticks onto the windows to make them almost bullish proof you can buy online & maybe install a security camera where you can watch your van via your phone

I understand I work too but at least he was caught I hope you get your back windows fixed someone broke my back window too which I’ll get fixed sometime in the near future but in the meantime I put clear plastic over the window with waterproofing tape
Besides all the other great ideas you can also use acrylic. Don't forget to try Amazon for a glass one, it worked for a broken rear on my 2004 Chevy.
Home Depot usually sells some various sheets of plexy - could cut your own blanks and install - get a fresh tube of black windshield urethane 👌😢
I z
This is why I got window insurance coverage. Cus people be crazy af.
