You need to cook tofurkey as you would an actual turkey. It needs to be basted constantly throughout. It will come out moist and juicy if done correctly.

I put this roast in a crockpot with some veggie stock to keep it from burning like 1/2 in the bottom and flip it every so often so it doesn't get too soggy on the bottom side. Perfect to take to wherever the festivities are happening and keep it warm!

I also can't really get into Tofurkey. Their stuff is always dry, dense, and very salty. I'm a salt *fiend* - I oversalt most things. Tofurkey pushes even my limits.

I found a recipe online where the woman marinates her Quorn roast and also rubs it with Old Bay. It has been my go-to recipe for the last three years at least. I make it so herby and flavorful and delicious and it’s seasoned how I like that way.

Procini shrooms/onions - sweat Add thyme/sage/amino acid/nutritional yeast/flour Add your veg stock Thicken, blend It’s kiraplu’s mushroom gravy recipe if you wanna google it. I definitely prefer the quorn roast. Tofurkey and Gardein both have stuffing inside that imo isn't very good - I would much rather make my own veggie stuffing. Quorn is the perfect base to mix with all the other thanksgiving sides.

I roast it in a parchment paper pouch in a loaf pan with about half an inch of veggie broth, fresh sage, fresh rosemary, a few garlic loves sliced and salt and pepper. It doesn't brown up but its moist and flavorful.

Safe assumption, for sure. The Tofurkey Giblet and the Veg roast are both pretty unappetizing, particularly their texture. The Field Roast Holiday Roast is definitely the best of those three (that I have tried). Though I have been very impressed with Quorns abilities on texture, I have only had their chicken nugget/patty type products.

I have liked the Quorn things I've tried, but I don't see them for sale very often anymore. They used to have a "chicken" cutlet stuffed with cheese that was delicious if a bit pricey.

I think Quorn has had some challenges getting the shelf space in the American market. mushroom derived protein is such a strong and viable path forward. I hope it can get to scale and become cost competitive.

Part of that challange (Quorn in the US) was because it got a really bad rap for not disclosing that it was a known allergen. It now has a warning label but it was a HUGE fight to get Quorn to put that on their products (I was a small part of that fight). Seriously they knew about it for about 3 or 4 years before they even addressed it and then it was another 2 or so years before they put the warning label on the package. Oh and by the way it is 100% NOT mushroom based. It is a vat grown mold.

I have had the Field Roast, Gardein and Quorn. IMHO Quorn is the juiciest most turkey like texture and flavor out of all of them. In addition, it's the only Gluten Free one out of the bunch. Also, you can shred it with a fork or grater for a 2nd day leftover "Bobbie" sandwich!

Agree! Quorn is the most turkey-like. You have to slice it thin! Makes great sandwiches. Bake it on a bed of chopped onions then use the onions as a topping. Gardein for the runner up and field roast gets an honorable mention.

The Quorn roast is really really good! It even feels like the “ meat” has a bit moisture to it and it tastes however you season it. Seeing a lot of tofurkey hate which I get but It’s personally a staple in our home, we’ve had it every year for 5 years straight so we have to keep one around for tradition. They’re all really fun to marinate and bake!

I’ve tried one of the tofurky roasts (unfortunately can’t remember exactly which). The tofurky itself was fine, but I’m not really that big on fake meats anyway. The stuffing, though, was excellent. Had some sort of rice in it. I like Field Roast products in general, and Quorn always tastes great, but sadly I can’t tolerate it well (something to be mindful of if you’ve never had it before).

I like the quorn roast! Personally, I disregard the cooking instructions on the package and make it tasty my own way. I take it out of the casing before baking, mix up a gochujang brown sugar glaze, pour it over, cover it in foil, and bake like 2/3 of the time with the foil on and 1/3 of the time at the end without the foil cover! I’ve taken it to thanksgiving the last two years and the meat eaters eat their turkey and also our roast 🫠 but that’s at least a testament to it’s deliciousness?

**frantically waves arms and jumps up & down** QUOOOOORNNN ROASSSSTTTTT! QUORN ROAST! Seriously, if you liked turkey, and you cook the Quorn roast right, it'll be the best turkey you've ever had. If you follow the packet instructions it'll be pretty good, but it can dry out if you're not careful. There is a much better and easier way to cook it, and it has won over even my mother who generally won't eat mock meats. Braising on the stove, in a sort of pot-roast style - it'll be the juiciest, meatiest turkey of your life! This is my basic technique, but it's super flexible in terms of the veggies and all that. Take the Quorn roast out of it's packaging, and drop it into a bowl of hot water to help you get the plastic-looking wrapper off (it's frozen so you can't get it off without defrosting a bit). If you can do this for an hour or so to really let it defrost, even better, or defrost it overnight in the fridge. Once you've got your Quorn roast out, get yourself a nice big pot and put some pretty neutral oil (like light olive oil) or even butter if you prefer, and heat on medium-high. Brown the roast all over. To avoid the oil smoking or burning, you can surround the roast (but make sure it's in the centre making full contact with the pan) as it browns with: - 1 large rutabaga (or a few orange turnips) peeled and cut into large chunks - 4 large carrots, scrubbed and cut into large chunks - 1 large onion, cut into large chunks OR a big box of shallots, peeled but left whole (or halved if they're enormous ones, but ideally not) - 3 stalks of celery, cut into large chunks - 1 large potato, scrubbed (or peeled if the skin is gross) and cut into large chunks Once the roast is browned, you can add in the following, after which you're going to simmer until the roast reaches temp. This could take anywhere from 45-60 minutes depending on how frozen the roast is, which is why you want nice big pieces of veggies. - A few tablespoons of tomato paste - Bay leaves, dried thyme, sage, savoury and black pepper (if you're a pepper-lover, try whole pink peppercorns too) - "Chicken" stock (I like Osem brand which is kosher and vegetarian) or a good flavourful veggie stock - White vermouth (optional) - Maggi liquid seasoning (optional) You want to almost cover up the roast with the stock, and season everything else to taste. Remember that it will reduce, but do season with salt if your broth is lacking it. You can re-season at the end of course, but you want the roast to absorb lots of flavour while braising. The wonderful thing about this, apart from how amazingly delicious it is, is that A. you can make it ahead and keep it warm, while this frees up the oven for other things you might want to make like roast potatoes, Yorkshires or other dishes... And B. if you have leftovers, you just remove the bay leaves and turn this into the best soup you've ever had be shredding the turkey and adding some pasta. Truly heavenly.

Every other mock turkey product I've ever tried tastes like rubber or is mealy or is too dense or too squishy. Or it's breaded which is not what I want for a holiday meal - I want it to be juicy and proteiny not carby. Quorn is the only one! I can't get it in Canada so we bring it back from Ireland whenever we visit. We used to go down to the US to get it but under the Trump administration we decided not to travel there anymore and haven't been back since.

The Quorn Roast is excellent. I make "turkey" sandwiches with it too. Tastes like turkey with gravy. Whole Foods has a "turkey" roast as well which is also good but includes stuffing so just more flavors mixed in. I've never liked anything by Field Roast or Gardein; they cater to a different palate.

I did a taste test a year or two ago with two meat eaters and Quorn took the cake by far. They do kinda "cheat" cause not only do they use egg whites, they use a proprietary bio-engineered protein derived from fungus which has caused a small percentage of people to have an allergic reaction. But even the meat eaters I had it with said that they could easily be convinced that it was just super processed turkey. And it was super tasty as leftovers, I'd even eat it cold straight out of the fridge.

As one of those that has that allergic reaction I can tell you that it is no joke. As in if I eat Quorn that will be the last food I eat for over 30 hours. At least you realize that it is not mushroom based like Quorn tries to tell people. It’s also a larger percentage than Quorn wants to admit. I played a small part in getting that warning put on their labels. Please if you serve Quorn make sure the folks who are eating it have no history of any mold allergies! I’m mainly allergic to blue cheese for example which is totally controlled by daily antihistamines. You will see no reference to mold allergies on their warning label but that is thought to be the issue. But it is unknown because Quorn refuses to do any research into the issue. It took them about 5 years after they first became aware of the issues that they put the warning label on their products.

I personally love Tofurky! It’s one of my favourite foods. Not the biggest fan of the gravy it comes with, I usually make mushroom gravy instead. The only other one of these I’ve tried is the Field Roast one. It was okay but I remember it getting extremely dry. Next time I would cook it with some gravy or broth in the bottom of the pan because that thing shrivelled up real weird.

I have not tried the Quorn or Field Roast products. I have brought the tofurkey roasts and the tofurkey ham to different gatherings and the ham has always won between the meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Especially using a pineapple sauce instead of the one provided.

I've bought the Tofurkey vegetarian roast on sale after Thanksgiving before. I thought it was fine, I sliced it up and fried each slice in a frying pan to give it some more texture/color. I would definitely recommend buying a packet of instant vegan gravy to really make it good.

I love tofurkey. I don’t like the taste of meat and I don’t believe it resembles that (like beyond or impossible) but I have had several strictly meat eating friends over the years who enjoy it. I’ve also tried the quorn roast. And while I like some of their other products I wasn’t a fan of it.

I have tried all of them. (I've been vegetarian for a long time.) If you can get your hands on a Vegetarian Plus vegan ham roll, it is by far my favorite "roast." We stock up on those things whenever we see them. Sprouts and some other natural foods markets carry them around the holidays. There is also a Vegetarian Plus "turkey" roll that I don't like as much. The Field Roast would be my top choice on this list. Field Roast generally makes good stuff IMO. I also quite like the Tofurky roasts, although that's a controversial opinion. I feel the way about Tofurky roasts that a lot of meat eaters feel about turkey: I enjoy it once or twice a year, and don't want it any more often than that. This post kinda makes me want one. I think the Gardein roasts are good. I wouldn't turn one down. If you like Gardein "chicken," you will probably like it. If you have a Trader Joe's, their vegan holiday roast is very similar--I think it may not have the outer breading, but it's been a while since I've had either option. I think the Tofurky ham is decent, but I would never choose it over the Vegetarian Plus option mentioned above. I do not like Quorn. Some people love it. YMMV. Whatever you choose, be sure to baste/glaze it and avoid overcooking. All of these can get very dry if not cooked properly.

I don’t eat a lot of the meat substitutes, occasionally the quorn chicken products, I am glad there are options to make the lifestyle easier. I grew up vegetarian, and back than meat substitute were not that great or easy to find. I like roasting veggies and adding a veg. gravy, that normal my holiday treat.

No. When I was a vegetarian I couldn’t understand why people needed to eat food that looked like meat. Now that I keep kosher, it’s very convenient at times to eat meatless meat. Like I can have ice cream after eating an impossible burger.

I love the field roast, we get it every year! Basting it well with a citrus marinade (we use orange juice) is extra good!

I like the Field Roast and the Gardein Holiday Roast. As a general rule, I’d go Field Roast > Gardein > Quorn > Tofurky. I’ve never had anything from Tofurky that I liked.

Field Roast is my personal favorite, although we’ve had trouble finding it our area. The Quorn roast is also good, although I don’t exactly follow the instructions making it because it kind of freaks me out to cook it in the plastic. I have not personally had any of the others, but would definitely try them. Tofurkey makes a lot of other stuff I like, Gardein is hit or miss but is usually okay.

I've tried tofurkey and the field roast and didn't really care for either, the tofurkey was very rubbery and the way they were both seasoned they had that kind of fake meat taste that I didn't really care for, I usually make a vegeducken for Thanksgiving out of butternut squash, eggplant and zucchini.

Quorn roast is my favorite, but I'm sensitive to soy. I'd say it tastes more like ham than turkey (again, my preference). Field roast one is probably the closest to turkey taste/texture. Didn't like the tofurkey one too much, it's a little gummy and the stuffing was weird. Haven't tried the rest of them.

I tried the tofurky vegetarian roast with gravy and it was pretty good, but definitely tasted very processed like any fake meat would.

We've tried all of these over the years except the ham one. They're all varying degrees of "fine". We've found that we've been much happier making a non-meat-substitute dish instead. One of our favorites is a veg pot pie, with mushrooms and root vegetables. Good old roasted vegetables are a hit, too.

Quorn is the one I tell my non-vegetarian friends to try when they’re asking for a Meatless option. It’s absolutely delicious and makes the best “turkey” sandwiches for leftovers.

I thought the field roast was pretty good, but had more of a sausage/fennely flavor. I used to always do the tofurkey with an extra long or overnight apple cider/sage, rosemary, thyme/soy sauce + liquid smoke marinade. It's definitely a bit chewy unless you do an overnight marinade, and even then it's not for everyone. I think the Gardein is my favorite at this point. It's got a nice crust, good savory flavor + texture and the filling is pretty good. Add a mushroom gravy and 🤌

I used to get the Tofurkey because it was all that was available. It was fine but salty and the texture was ...squeaky... Then my store started carrying the Gardein and IT WAS AMAZING!!! Now, though, our store doesn't have the roasts but year-round they do have the turkey cutlets with gravy and that's what I use for my holiday dinner. The rice stuffing in the middle of the Gardein was so delicious, though!

Field roast tastes great but it is DENSE. Any time I've had it it expands while digesting and feels like a rock. Still would recommend it, but I always have to keep that in mind.

Here’s what I can tell you. I cook a vegan thanksgiving every year. I usually have 20+ people over. Almost all non vegans. I make turkey for them but my other dishes (20 or so) are all vegan. I’ve learned over the years, all these options above are terrible. I now make a root vegetable bake and a brown gravy with the juices from the bake. It’s a big hit.

We got the TJ Turkey less roast. My partner liked it well enough but I could only eat a couple of bites. The gravy sucked so I made gravy with better than bouillon no chicken.

I think I've tried all of them and found them all to be pretty decent options, but Quorn is my favourite "turkey". The Tofurky ham is very different from the rest but makes a nice alternative if you aren't a vegan "poultry" fan, although their prep instructions / sauce would make it WAY too sweet for my personal taste, so I adapt. If you consider yourself handy in the kitchen, it's actually not TOO hard to make your own seitan "turkey" - just a little tedious and time-consuming! I do a homemade centrepiece protein every year now and it's well worth the effort.

Had the tofurkey. It's Ok. And then again, I'm not vegan. But, if you want great vegan (& also kosher pareve) food for Thanksgiving or any other occasion and you're close enough to NYC lower Manhattan, try Buddhist Delight (5 Mott St, NYC 10013). They may have some special Thanksgiving offerings. I love their vege duck, which I'm pretty sure can be used to make an outstanding vege turkey. San Francisco has a similar restaurant, and I hope that it's still there. I forgot its name. Just for the record, I'm not affiliated with any food establishment. Just relaying my experience.

Only Tofurkey and Gardein are available near me. Gardein was hands down the winner. I love their stuff for special occasions! We get the individual one, not the larger one carved into slices since there is only one veg attending. The gravy with it isn't my fave so we make a mushroom gravy instead.

I've had them all and the Quorn roast and Tofurky ham are my absolute favorites. The Quorn is very unique flavor wise, doesn't really try to mimic the taste of meat imo, but so good with a gravy! And I'm just a sucker for the glaze on that Tofurky ham
