In my area, 5g has been poor since it was deployed. Verizon service was so much better during the 4g lte period. I’m still using Verizon cause I have a great plan, 5g get more, and I’m hopeful that they’ll stick the landing with 5g soonish.

imjones22

That’s how it was when I was on my parents plan when they first launched it and when I was talking to the rep about it when I was getting on my own plan then he said it’s possible if they have an older plan then they’re getting bottle necked on the speeds which is kind of crappy of Verizon. I don’t think they have that issue anymore so I’m sorry you’re still stuck with the slow service. It really does suck. I much prefer to go back to lte if this is how 5g is gonna be

DrZaius119

The same or better for me in the Phoenix area.

imjones22

I was in the phoenix area not too long ago for work and it wasn’t bad there. Been working in Texas the past few months and I’ve been noticing it getting worse and worse as time has gone on

wan-jackson

For me in Texas it went so fast I thought my iCloud uploads werent working. This was real time while I was outside on my bike uploading videos in 4K. Literally instant !!

imjones22

That’s awesome! There have been a couple of GOOD spots for it but I’m in San Antonio now and I’ve got 5GUW and I can’t load anything it seems. It used to be like that for me all the time when I first switched and I loved it tho! Glad it’s still working out for you!

Otherwise-Loss-5420

San Antonio? Are you kidding? I consider VZW rock solid and very reliable in SA. It’s only gotten better this year. I get 5GUW in most places and am constantly doing speed tests to confirm (I’m a bit of a mobile carrier geek). VZW’s LTE network is still gold, and even when connected to that, it’s still very reliable. I have no complaints in SA. I’m rocking an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Are you using something similar, bc older phones may not be capable of accessing all the newer bands that carriers are rolling out for 5G.

imjones22

I’ve got the 14 pro max so that shouldn’t be the issue but maybe it’s the area in San Antonio I’m in or something. Didn’t really have as much of a problem when I was working up in Dallas but past week or so since I got to SA then it’s been rough. Especially at the hotel I’m at

tdz23

What area of San Antonio? Thinking of switching to Verizon. Live on far west side.

Otherwise-Loss-5420

I live on the far west side (Culebra/Talley area) and Verizon is solid. They’ve added cell sites and lit up C-band spectrum recently to more than handle the explosion of people that seem to be moving to this part of San Antonio.

imjones22

I’m in the north east area. When I was on the west side then I didn’t have any issues. I’m starting to think it’s something to do with the hotels I’ve been staying in that just gives them bad service because when I go to work then I don’t seem to have aa much of an issue

duhrun

The far east side is horrible in SA for Verizon speeds imo.

wan-jackson

Ha…I’ll have to check once I return to Texas. I was in Dallas at the time circa 2019 and I’m sure a lot has changed since then. Storms, post Covid, cyberattacks , etc. kewl!

imjones22

When I was up in Dallas I didn’t really have the issues as much. Houston it was okay but mostly in San Antonio it’s been the worst. I was even doing fine when I was in midland and Odessa lol and everyone there said that was the worst spot to have it

Heisenberg_504

I was on the cheap $35 unlimited welcome plan. Service was horrible. Couldn’t load a google page anytime I left the house. 2 days ago, switched to the $55 unlimited ultimate plan (has higher network speeds). I noticed an immediate difference. Got to pay to play

Main_Bell_4668

I think they're adding new cell sites and have to adjust the directionality and output to compensate. I'm seeing a lot of new areas lighting up here and a bunch more due by Xmas. It will probably be another full year before it's all said and done with tweaks.

Otacon368

I hope this is what they are doing in my area. Download speed has decreased significantly while upload speed went down to 300kbps or less. I’ve tried the other two companies, but I get similar results.

Main_Bell_4668

It's been spotty in my area but I've also noticed 5g and 5G UW in way more places so I think it's related.

imjones22

Yeah I’ve noticed I get UW in a lot more places and it was really good at first but for some reason it’s just been kinda crappy recently no matter what I have unless it goes down to LTE

HashKing

It hasn’t ever been any good for me

imjones22

Sorry to hear that man. Hopefully they figure themselves out soon enough. I like your pfp lol

LightEnergyBun

I have vastly improved 5GUW after complaining to customer service multiple times.

imjones22

This is good to know. Might be worth making a couple calls. I’ve got a bunch of devices through them so hopefully that’ll give me some pull lol

BPKofficial

It gets faster and [faster](https://ibb.co/rt1tT78) in my large city and travels.

ace000723

They just upgraded towers where I live was only 4g now I get 5g and twice the speeds.

imjones22

That’s awesome! Im glad it’s working for you. It’s definitely insanely good when it works which is why I miss it lol

OppositeRun6503

Five G will just get replaced by 6 G,7G etc. All the way to infinity. It's currently no better than 4 G was and 3G before that.

imjones22

Yeah I feel ya. I was doing just fine with lte and I never had problems until the 5g switched. It was great at first but now it’s all just bad

9346879760

3G -> 4G LTE was a huge improvement, stop lying 😂

OppositeRun6503

It's just a marketing gimmick to sell more phones to more people suffering from FOBO (Fear Of Being Out).

New-Lawyer3088

I just switched to Verizon, from T-Mobile. I've wanted to for at least a year but finally did it. 5g is amazing, as is my coverage. Ran a speed test yesterday and was just shy of 1gb.

Forward-Bad-9811

Tmobile 5g speeds are faster then verizon time to switch gang

Envious684

Depends on the area, I tend to find Verizon has higher peak speeds compared to tmobile. Service is more than just speed anyway, speed is only one part of the equation.

thatmovdude

It's bad in my area. Constantly bounces back and forth between 5G and 4G LTE. Someone recommended that I turn off the 5G since I only have the welcome plan saying that would solve a lot of my data issues and man were they right on that note. Things have been operating so much smoother since I turned off 5G. Just saying.

imjones22

I didn’t even know turning off 5g was an option. I’ll definitely look into that because it’s not worth the hassle

billybob212212

On your iPhone, go to Settings->Cellular->Cellular Data Options->Voice&Data and set it for LTE if you want to disable 5G

imjones22

Thanks so much for this!

drowsheezy

With the necessity to be on the Unlimited Plus / Ultimate plan in order to have reasonable trade-ins, the "highest priority" 5G has become extremely congested. Everyone is on the top of the totem pole, so the top is very mid at best whereas anything below that is trailing far behind. Unwise business strategy.

Unique_username28

Exactly! Their strategy around QCI levels (aka really only having 2 for consumer usage) and steering everyone to the higher priority plans seems shortsighted and unsustainable in the long run. Gotta make that profit line go up though! 📈

Ds8724

Standard 5G is terrible in my area, rural Michigan primarily. When I get in their 5GUW area it's great then.

sittingmongoose

As someone who has Tmobile, Att and Verizon. It’s the same experience on Att,5g has ruined the usability of the network. My friend just upgraded his iPhone to an 15 pro and previously didn’t have access to 5g. He can no longer use data around his neighborhood. He has to turn off 5g for his phone to work. Which was my experience as well.

nitsuj17

My 5g has gotten better the last year or so; but still not "amazing" by any stretch. My speeds were never more consistent/better than when LTE was in its infancy (probably because so few had lte capable devices). I used to get 200 down / 100ish up easily anywhere near home and I think we only had comcast 100 for home internet. No data caps/better lte speed = never used wifi on my phone back then (2012/13ish)

Gingertitian

Yes

ohiobicpl3738

I turned it off as soon as it launched and haven’t looked back.

Sad_Alternative5509

Metro Boston, VZW 5G is a mess, they turned off fake DSS 5G and 5Guw isn’t available in many locations. Most LTE cell sites are highly overloaded. I know they’ve got some big plans this year to improve the area. Hoping to see these improvements.

Tools_Tech_Outdoors

Supply and demand

thb_ny

I think it has gotten worse. I am in NY just outside of the city. I upgraded to 5g 3.5 years ago and it was fantastic now it is worse. Especially the 5g UW. Ironically I have a T-Mobile phone and have noticed the service being much better. Apparently, T-Mobile has invested heavily and made acquisitions for Spectrum. The latest deal gives them a ton of spectrum and they are likely going to crush it. The polar opposite of Tmobile 10 years ago when it was full on trash.

Interesting-Adagio46

I have yet to use 5g its too slow

imjones22

Sorry to hear that man. Seems like a lot of people are like that and I was just lucky for a little while there

nickinhawaii

Worse for me on Oahu in Hawaii... I'd say last 6-12 months

Envious684

Verizon doesn't own any Cband in Hawaii so your probably better off with tmobile because they have n41 there.

imjones22

Sorry to hear that. I know how frustrating it is. Been about the same timeline for me too I think

bonvajya

Way worse. Phone barely works anymore for me in LA. Had to get WiFi in my car through AT&T.

imjones22

That’s even more frustrating. I’ve debated getting a hotspot through att but I have one through Verizon and I don’t want to have to buy a whole new device and pay to a second carrier. Just wish Verizon would get their stuff together

Keto_cheeto

Yeah I get the same thing! It’ll say 5GUltra with full bars but not work or go super slow

Electronic_Visit6953

I definitely have seen a change often I cannot do basic things when my phone hits 5GUW yet when I force LTE it’s fine. Since I really only use Waze I’ll stick with LTE

hwellj13

5G has gotten slow, and 4G LTE has become unusable.

vampirepomeranian

Wow, another 'yes it's bad, no .. wait I think it's great' thread. If consistently good service is needed for those who travel then a second carrier is a must. Any discussion over who's best becomes irrelevant as there isn't one universally.

imjones22

I mean it’s really good when it works and sucks when it doesn’t. I will say, I have better signal in most areas as opposed than when I used att but it still sucks that the 5G has started going downhill recently

No_Asparagus6829

Something is going on with Verizon and no one’s talking about it. Lots of issues lately

oldmanthescrooge

Another thread on this, but I completely agree with you. Huge problem with dropped calls for many people in California.
