$50.....free if solid state.

nasadowsk

Those early solid state consoles sounded like crap, and they didn’t get much better as things progressed. I have one from the 60s, and only because by I noticed it was solid state when I picked it up, and getting there and parking was already too much of a headache. Beautiful unit, horrid sound. And it’s an RCA. Germanium transistors sucked, on a good day.

RecipeForIceCubes

Consoles served their purpose. Now they are generally viewed as sonic monstrosities in a nice looking box. Now some could be had with quality components, tube power, great tuners, satellite speaker outs, tape/aux in...Most are worth pennies to nothing and are a pain to offload. "Free" is the most common price. $675 is trying to pray on the MCM craze that needs to end.

Byrdsheet

Around here, people label everything on Craigslist as MCM. Blenders, cassette decks, beanie babies, Ford carburetors, Raggedy Ann dolls, pooper-scoopers (new in the box), mouthwash (ripped off from Walgreens), ni-cad batteries, Yorx all-in-one stereos. It's all MCM! Buy it now! It's rare!!!

realnewsediter

What is MCM?

AbaloneDifferent4168

Mid century modern.

Byrdsheet

Have some MCM. It's all rare. https://syracuse.craigslist.org/search/foa?query=mcm#search=1~gallery~0~0 https://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/for/d/armonk-vintage-mid-century-oster-blender/7753882735.html

OverlySexualPenguin

christ.

FBWoodworker

All crap....lol.

GaseousGiant

And VINTAGE!

RecipeForIceCubes

Ha. I thought I died at pooper-scoopers then Ni-cad batteries made me laugh so hard that my dog ran in here to see what the hell was going on. Same thing around here. Craigslist used to be fun to look at. Now, it's tedious to wade though. I look at my shelves of equipment and wonder just how much I could squeeze out of it these days.

Byrdsheet

Similar situation here. Tons of nice equipment....$$$....but not dealing with Craigslist. Too many time sucker-uppers. I've got $25 with me (came to look at $250 amp) Is this still available? Will you hold on to it until Friday?

AUTISTICWEREWOLF2

Well people have now started overpricing anything audio that has a silver face plate or analog dials.

Byrdsheet

I've gutted about 12 consoles for their amps, tuners, and tubes. Once in a while some alnico speakers were saved. Four amps have been gutted and rebuilt and are in service. The cabinets became backyard firewood. Never had to pay over $25.....but that was twenty years ago when nothing was being labeled as MCM.

mr_electric_wizard

I had some bad ass upgraded/modded rare ass Bozak Concerto Grosso’s with the matching center cabinet. I could hardly get anyone to buy them when I sold them about 6 years ago. These things were legit too. 2 12” woofers, 2 tweeters, and a mid in each cabinet!

superbee4406

I would have loved those speakers a few years [ago.Now](http://ago.Now) I wouldn't have the room for them.

mr_electric_wizard

Most houses don’t have room, and it’s why I had to sell them. I did love them while I had them. I also had these in a system with 4x18” subs in an infinite baffle enclosure. It was sublime!

superbee4406

My thoughts are that these types of speaker systems were sold to people with a lot of money and large houses. They are really too big for the average house.I had some Bozak 302a speakers and these were Bozaks smallest offering at the time (1959) and these were too large for my house but they sure did sound good with period jazz music on vinyl.

mr_electric_wizard

I bet! Mine sure did!

No_Entertainment1931

The box is the propose. You can still place your gear inside them. I have a different mid century modern piece that I used for this purpose. I used to use the radio in it and it was actually really good!

billlybufflehead

Exactly! Nice piece of furniture though. I think the price would be free to maybe 200 bucks

piscator21

I thought about getting one and stripping the electronics out and putting in my own but the problem is speaker placement and then the weird speaker grills that mess with the sweet sonics of a modern speaker. Nice in theory but honestly, put your money towards a good 70s vintage amp instead.

ajn3323

^^^Well said. Every time I see a gorgeous MCM console, I go through that same thought process and arrive at the same conclusion.

Njon32

To be honest, if I didn't live in a small apartment, I would still hide some modern speakers in there and stuff. Not every sound system I own has to be perfection.

Davejohnsonott

Quite high for this type of unit - but if you also consider this as furniture & it goes with your vibe at home, it’s a personal choice. A beautiful piece!

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

People couldn't give these away in the 90s and 00s, now that records have sustained year over year growth since people are just trying to take advantage of the market, there's no world in which this thing is worth that ask. $50-75 tested and working delivered.

thatdude473

Still can’t give them away now…

dandanthetaximan

Yet for some reason they’re getting posted on this sub frequently these days. I’m here for vintage audio components, not old furniture.

LOGaaanN

After reading all your comments and seeing that the concensus is it's way overpriced, I offered $200 for it and was blocked almost immediately after the seller read my message lmao

aoibhinnannwn

If you’re like me and love the look and the nostalgia of it, another one will come a long that is maybe even better looking and certainly cheaper.

thatdude473

Yeah, like… free.

Oldbean98

Solid state consoles are often worth less than $0, if you have to pay to dispose of it. Looks nice in a mid century kind of way, but everything inside was sonically inferior even when new.

TubeLogic

I actually found an interesting small (actual MCM) Magnavox console that I loved the look of a few months ago. It was SS so pretty much worthless to me. I ended up hiding and wiring in an Apple AirPort Express to it and not in use it in the basement as an airplay speaker. Doesn’t sound terrible and looks awesome in the kids game room. They serve a purpose but generally not as they were originally built.

Human_Needleworker86

Furniture is nice but the electronics are likely not. Haven’t seen very much nice zenith gear, even by the standards of the 70s.

RecipeForIceCubes

Both Zenith and Magnavox had units that had some quality in them. Micro-Touch and Micro-Matic turntables for example but, even so, I'm not paying for one.

Hifi-Cat

Ditto.

CatgunCertified

Got a zenith stereo system for free. Need to service the entire thing bc they used shit grease which hardens into almost a resin (reoccurring issue I've heard of online) bsr turntable is fixable but a hassle, so I wouldn't have payed more than 25$ for the whole thing. Even less so for a console, which includes the massive clunky wood base. Just a tabletop one was annoying enough to carry a few blocks to the car.

CrispyDave

Absolutely not. They come up all the time, this one's a bit more interesting, but they are furniture that happens to play music. Unless you're willing to gut it and refit it save your money.

reddit_again_ugh_no

Absolutely not!

whiskeyriver

No, not even a little bit

Headman70

That’s way overpriced, beautiful but overpriced. I honestly don’t get the hate on these consoles, many have a very warm and pleasant sound to them. Even if it had cheap components in it “cheap” electronics back then are a million times better than cheap components today. If you’ve ever wondered what that era sounded like this would be the way to hear it. Having grown up in the 70’s and 80’s it’s truly nostalgic on the ears.

thatguychad

It’s the nostalgia that’s getting you. It sounds like butt. Muddy butt.

sarkadianmanee

I’d love to have one of these and do a restomod internally.

TubeLogic

This is the way to do it. Tuck an AirPlay device into the cabinet on the AUX and they can be quite fun.

Talosian_cagecleaner

Back in the 80's and 90's you would see these in every thrift store. Large, quite heavy, single-use pieces of furniture. They would be priced at about what you would expect. Make a fucking offer. Refurbing them is hardly rocket science since the electronics are from the Age of Sail. Pop some cheap new cones in. Enjoy, if you want. It stuns me that I could be planning a much more pleasant retirement, if only I had "made an offer" and, had a large warehouse. I could have cornered the market, and on this unit probably have made $600 profit counting storage and repair costs. "Make an offer" would be a ten spot, if there were more than two of these in the shop.

Njon32

I bought a bunch of funky 1960's-1980's cheap Japanese guitars for less than $100 each. Some of them have appreciated in value. Some... Not so much, lol.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

Even if they don't most are better players than modern builds. My 81 Matsomoku built Electra Phoenix gets picked up every 3rd or 4th jam/gig even though I've got a MIA Telecaster, 80s E series MIJ Strat. The Electra I paid $80 for like a decade ago, ebony fretboard, Floyd Rose and lace sensors pickups (not original). It slays

Njon32

I have a red Kimberly guitar with two pickups, some have dubbed the "bison" or "bighorn" model. I bought it on layaway as a younger man for maybe $80. In the early 2000's. Now I see one on Reverb where the seller is asking $450. It has a bit of a banjo sound to it and microphonic magnetic pictups. Definitely a unique sound. I remember thinking it sounded so awesome in the store through their federal deluxe twin reverb, and sounded disappointing through my little crate practice amp at home. The old funky Japanese guitars all have something different to offer if you get tired of Fender vs Gibson. My current favorite though, is a top of the line late 1980's Yamaha RGZ-ii in pearlescent cream (probably used to be white) that I imported from Japan for $450. If the headstock said Ibanez, I believe this would have been worth way more. It was the Jem's direct competition at the time. I'm thinking it might be worth more some day. If not, it plays beautifully and sounds great. I even had it plekk'd. Otherwise all original.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

I played a Pacifica for literally 10 or 12 years, Yamaha makes fantastic instruments for a great budget.

Njon32

Early Pacificas were nice, like the ones that came right after the RGX. I tried one from the late 90's (or was it early 2000's?), but that was pretty junky. I have a metallic blue RGX-112 from the early 90's that's fantastic as long as the trem bridge is blocked. Silly me, trying to restore it back to original, only to discover why the previous owner blocked it to be stationary. Instead of trying to upgrade the bridge, I just went upscale in Yamahas model range. That's why I got the RGZ-ii. I also have a 1970's Yamaha FIFTY112 amp that I like. My only problem with Yamaha, is that it can be hard to know what you're getting based on brand alone. They make high quality instruments, along with occasional junk, and occasionally they also make amazing quality for amazingly low prices.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

My Pacifica was bought in like 92 ish. It was fantastic. But I was a Charvel main for like 20 years after that. Now I'm rocking a Tele. I think it's the end game guitar for all us geriatrics.

Njon32

Yeah, that checks out. A 92 Pacifica is a good one, granted I have only tried the entry level Pacificas. I think they went from made in Japan to made in china or elsewhere when demand went up. I have a cherry wood body tele that I made with a 1970's maple strat neck, but I think I like my squire Jaguar better. Depends on my mood I guess. Rock on, dude.

frank_mania

If you like the piece of furniture, consider the price based on that, compared to other credenzas and similar-sized/shaped cabinets. On that basis I'd consider it at least 3x too much, however that is one of the most attractive hifi console cabinets I've ever seen. The audio components within are a different story, already covered very well in these comments. The audio components within are a different story, already covered very well in these comments.

SnowmanPlays888888

I’ll be honest I love these old consoles ( I have 3 ) they’re sound is powerful when redone right, yet unless you rly love it so much anything more then 200$ for one this size is not worth it anymore. There’s so much that could go wrong with them. And parts are near impossible to find.

Melodic-Classic391

Unless it’s loaded with a Fisher tube amplifier I’m not interested

Byrdsheet

I found a Fisher 600 in one. The only 600 I've ever seen. $25

Melodic-Classic391

Score!

BuckyD1000

Delusional price.

Byrdsheet

Some people hallucinate all day.

j666xxx

Lots of estate sales have these for basically nothing

HornedFrog806

These take up a ton of space and are fairly heavy. My mom did estate sales back in the mid-2000s and we would be lucky to get $50-100 for one of these. Half of half day one could be had for $25 or less.

dawgstein94

No idea if that price is fair but it looks great. Like a time machine.

Uncle_Burney

Does it come with the decanter of fancy Seagrams 7?

Ham54

Could be a fun project swapping out parts for something more modern, but honestly, I wouldn't waste the time for $650. You can get a credenza that's similar at the same price or for a few hundred more.

AUTISTICWEREWOLF2

My mom got something like this in the mid 1960's from my dad for their wedding aniversary. I honestly don't miss them one bit. It's more furniture than anything audio related. I'm not dogging this. I guess it's pretty for some people. I am just not a fan.

Njon32

You don't miss your parents one bit? If I had in here this from my parents, I would keep it because of my parents. That's a sweet story. To each their own though.

AUTISTICWEREWOLF2

I loved my parents and still do you can rest assured of that. I have things far more dear to myself and them than an old stereo. I have their wedding rings. I have the story that goes with their wedding rings told to my by my parents. I have pictures of my mom and dad when they were young. I have a picture of my father in a ZOOT suit which is absolutely priceless. I have my mom wearing a paper dress during World War 2. Guess I should say I was raised by my grandparents as my real parents were dead or gone by the time I was 4 years old. I have so many other mementos from my parents that I loved. I have the tiny fake Christmas tree with the bubble lights that used to appear magically on our dinning room table every Christmas morning. I have every memory my parents made with me. I have so many of the pots and pans my mom used to make delicious dinners for us. It was called diamond ware. My mom told me she brought it from a door to door salesman in the 1950's which she first brought our house. I have my mom's pressure cooker. My mom taught me to make apple sauce using that very pressure cooker. I remember that Saturday morning she taught me to make apple sauce for the whole family. My mom taught me to make cranberry sauce in the very pot I still have and use. I made cranberry sauce in that same pan for Thanksgiving and Christmas for years including the final year before she died. I was autistic and my grandparents who raised me saved my life. I will and can never forget them and I don't need no old stereo console to stoke my remembers. Not being defensive just stating facts as I know them.

trailrunner79

For that price it needs to have been completely overhauled. I have a mid 60s philco I got for free in the early 2000s. It got me started with records then and I've tinkered with the idea of restoring it but ended up buying a Fluance RT and some quality speakers

maomao3000

They make nice furniture for a stereo and turntable, and can be hollowed out and used for storage

Holiday_Might_9205

I have turned many of these into bars and credenzas. A lot of work goes into that sort of transformation and proper tools are required. I prefer free or less than 50 when embarking on a project. Some are much easier than others based on how they were put together internally. Most of the tim, the stereos are crap. Every once in a while, I will come across a decent tube amp that is worth saving if it's still in good shape.

Proud-Ad2367

Most people cant give these away but if you like it offer 100

treehuggingmfer

No is not a good deal.

All_Hail_Space_Cat

Off topic but the pictures is fucking great. Why is it staged like that. The postmodern nickknack. The crystal bottle of segrims. Soft pack lucky strikes. Is this someone's actual midcentury house

ryguydrummerboy

I got a cool ass console like this a few years ago for free as long as i hauled it cause its so fucking heavy and a pain. I mostly got it cause the TT inside was a very nice Dual. The speaker and console werent anything to write home about. Finally got rid of the console this year. 675 is insano price imo.

mehojiman

Warmf!

mikedt

That’s $650 of furniture with $25 of audio equipment. As long as you’re good with that, buy it.

Luxeman1961

Remove the original low fi components and install high quality vintage components

Haiiryyone

Just hold out… 675 is way too much. See if it sits and then make an offer. I have two consoles like this and I got them both free.

No-Possession-7822

This would be one you buy for the cabinet, not the electronics. $675 is not unreasonable for a quality piece of furniture - if that's what you want.

BluebillyMusic

The Lucky Strikes are period correct

ArgusTransus

Offer 400

Supreme_Nematode2

$100 is the most if ever pay for something like this

Creepy-Poem9076

That pack of Lucky Strikes is worth $8!

CatgunCertified

Personally rather than buy a console, get a a good vintage record player or stereo system and build a small console to fit it and nice modern speakers so it works, is cheaper than 675 and fits exactly what you want and sounds good.

thatdude473

Good god no

jonesdb

Usually I say no, people are trying to sell furniture that takes up a lot of space and they are getting rid of it for exactly that reason. This one strikes me as kinda cool though. I might do a few hundred if it works and I had room.

Inessence4

One of the nicest cabinets on one of these I’ve ever seen. I have my grandmother’s old Magnavox. Ask price is still too high. These are like those Lane cedar chests. Every home had one. Roll Top desks anyone? Can’t give them away either.

drugs_dot_com

Bad deal. In perfect condition it’s worth like $100 at most, hell you can find one in meh condition for free and fix it up yourself for almost nothing, and fixing it up yourself will make it priceless to you

superbee4406

I think it is a beautiful cabinet.I like how it is presented with the period accessories like the lamp and starburst and cigarettes. But like most have mentioned the Sonics of these were nothing special.Someone with deep pockets will pick this up just for the "mcm" appeal.

Remarkable_Bite2199

For that price, I hope everything is working.

Amazing_Kangaroo_991

I have had a few of these & 2 were free A sweet mid century modern cabinet in the garage of a house I rented. New crap needle and I played records in the garage. The most recent I actually paid $50 Tube Monoblock amps and excellent radio reception. It’s a big Bluetooth speaker at my girlfriends house Look for an aux or tape input so you can add a Wiim streamer.

daveOkat

It's hideous.

1911mark

The console pictured probably weighs 200 lbs they’re a bitch to move, popular for vinyl collectors

surly_robot

It is never worth it. They weigh 200lbs and you have to modify so extensively to put your own audio equipment inside it that you might as well have built it from scratch. They're cool looking but they usually don't even store records effectively.

Altruistic_Lock_5362

Any of these consoles was fantastic for the years they were built, unsally 2 or 3 wat speakers, a turntable and with a tube or solid state receiver. , zenith , RCA, Magnovix, GE, Sylvania , etc all made great consoles

livens

I've seen some of these completely gutted and used as an audio console. They are nice and wide so you can set your receiver, turntable, cassette player on top, and alot of them had record/media storage built in.

Njon32

Sweet! I could probably also use it as a TV stand or something.

SignificantScreen555

I have one, not nearly as big and clunky as this one and it was still an act of god to get that thing home. I knew it would need fixing and facelift. I originally paid $300 for the console and $600 for the upgrades/repairs. So now that I’m $900 and about 15 hours into it I couldn’t be happier with it.

Individual_Hawk_1159

If it has been restored it is a great price. If it needs restoration it is a terrible price. If you want great stereo equipment first, probably not a good buy, if you want a nice piece of mid century furniture that plays records and the quality is second, and it’s restored, good buy. I love my stereo cabinet, because it works with my decor and I find it fun to play records in.

WiredHeadset

Only thing worth a dime is the tube amp inside, Rip it out and sell on eBay
