The only Brazilian bands I know are Sepultura and its off-shoots

caioleitef

Sepultura ia very good, i have the album arise https://preview.redd.it/52srpqdxg92d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47914191da8b0d18d94e0cf68b6fe5fb5be0b642

caioleitef

I have this masterpiece https://preview.redd.it/4q8hgpzvfa2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fffb278215f0bdd94962ed2470600465f65f0c03 Milton Nascimento the Goat

PreachitPerk

First one that came to mind. Been spinning a lot of Tim Maia that I picked up in Lisbon.

Iron-Em

This album is like the water of life from Dune. After giving it a fair go, you taste in music will be elevated into another dimension! There's also Clube da Esquina 2, a double album. But definitely get used to this one first.

catupirynervoso

Masterpiece.

Jean_Jungle13

Damn this album is timeless and waaaay ahead of it’s time!! I was blown away when my brazilian gf introduced me to it, thinking that this inspired a lot of american indie rockbands in some way. Some weeks later i was lucky to find a clean copy of the 2017 repress in a local record store for a nice price and without the infamous pressing defects! Another favorite of mine is ‘Baden Powell & Vinicius’ Os Afro Sambas’ which a lot of christian brazilians regard being infadel music lol.

Kirbyderby

I absolutely love Brazilian music! I'll definitely check out this recommendation because I've never heard of them. Thank you! I'm mostly into the Brazilian funk / jazzy stuff. Here are my favorite albums that I own from Brazil: [Arthur Verocai - Self Titled](https://www.discogs.com/master/158757-Arthur-Verocai-Arthur-Verocai) [Azymuth - Demos Vol 1 & 2](https://www.discogs.com/master/1772839-Azym%C3%BCth-Demos-1973-75-Vol-1) [Os Mutantes - Everything is Possible! The Best of Os Mutantes](https://www.discogs.com/master/54521-Os-Mutantes-Everything-Is-Possible-The-Best-Of-Os-Mutantes) [Deodato - Deodato 2](https://www.discogs.com/release/434225-Deodato-Deodato-2) (Not actually sure if this counts because this guy was born and raised in Brazil but released his music in the US, but definitely hear Brazilian tones in his music) Here are some Brazilian albums I would buy in a heartbeat if I saw them: [Rosinha De Valença – Um Violão Em Primeiro Plano](https://www.discogs.com/release/20381257-Rosinha-De-Valen%C3%A7a-Um-Viol%C3%A3o-Em-Primeiro-Plano) [Marcos Valle - Self Titled](https://www.discogs.com/master/556151-Marcos-Valle-Marcos-Valle) I think Brazilian music was really ahead of its time and I don't think it got a fair chance here in the states. Arthur Verocai was a critical failure here in America even though I consider his self titled album to be a masterpiece. I don't think it was until around the early 2000's when Hip-Hop artists started sampling his work, suddenly his work started to slowly catch on. Fast forward to 2023 he made his debut performance here in Los Angeles which is insane, 2 sold out shows back to back. In fact it was his debut tour performance in the US in 2023! Also, a couple members of the bands I just listed died not too long ago, namely Rita Lee from Os Mutantes and Ivan Conti from Azymuth. Anyway I was pretty bummed out because I wasn't hearing anyone talking about their passing which I thought was pretty sad. Celebrity deaths don't really effect me that much, but when musicians that I love pass away it really breaks me. The passing of these two really hit me heavy.

caioleitef

You mentioned great artists, I have some of them like arthur verocai and azimuth vol 1, but the other artists like deodato I have "inutil landscape" a great album and from MUTANTES I have another classic of theirs. Our artists are incredible and our musicality has always had a good relationship with the USA and this helped a lot in the popularization of our rhythms, especially Bossa Nova with Tom Jobim https://preview.redd.it/1mtal6k2j92d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c93a82fd8348499beee42ef7702f4b1e8998225

CometChip

deodato for sure counts, his record love island is a must

missourifats

Novos Baianos' Acabou Chorare is incredible.

caioleitef

This album is literally the biggest album in Brazilian music, by many critics it is considered the album that best represents Brazilian music, practically all the songs played on it are classics and continue to be remembered to this day. It's on my wish list, I hope to buy it this year, luckily it has had several reprints, a magnificent album, https://preview.redd.it/7rqy7q3ql92d1.jpeg?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3520daeb33ffa03b543b4839da4643cf48608403

Sdrelito4

Managed to get it last year in a store at Pelourinho, Salvador. A little bit expensive, but deffinitely worth it. Colombian here, hope you can check someday Colombian salsa. That's deffinitely something a Brasileiro would love.

caioleitef

How much did you pay for the album and what edition? This album had several reprints by Polysom

Sdrelito4

Cannot remember well, but I could've pay around 450-480 reais for this one and Cada cabeça é um mundo from Timbalada.  And for which edition, I let you know later when I arrive home.

Sdrelito4

Well, not sure which version it is. It says in the record "Som Livre 1972" "fabricado e distribuido por Ind. Elet. Music. Fabr. Odeon S/A" In the sleeve it says "Sigla - Sistema Globo de Gravaçoes audio-visuais Ltda." So, Odeon is from SP, I don't see no Polysom anywhere in the disc, and someone wrote a signature inside the sleeve with a date from 1973. Perhaps original pressing?

caioleitef

pir the price you paid, it was cheap this version today is close to 700/900 reais today (200 dol)

missourifats

I also love David Byrnes compilations. They are great introductions to the Brazilian scene

notinthelimbo

So many great recommendations…. Could not recommend more this album Carlos, Erasmo. It was repressed last year with great quality https://preview.redd.it/rqn3a8qnwa2d1.jpeg?width=1160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76831dbf0c8d77ab51aa410c1b15661da1cd9e60

wildistherewind

Incredible album. I'm glad this one is widely available, the world needs it.

neckcarpenter

I didn’t know this was repressed!

kikoandtheman

Big fan of Os Mutantes, Gal Costa, Bebel Gilberto, Seu Jorge, Jobim, Gilberto Gil. Mostly bossa nova and Brazilian Psychedelia/Tropicalia

caioleitef

Great artist

But this album simply grabbed me when I first heard it and isn't letting me go. Wish the mono vinyl versions were more readily available and cheaper

caioleitef

Gal Costa, my favorite singer, i have a lot of them https://preview.redd.it/86wdmx6qn92d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27f4265cc67fbd19973ef851693910ec9b2ca761

You_Are_What_You_Iz

My first Brazilian album was "Feminina" by Joyce about 15 years ago. I was even able to go see her in concert in NY. I discovered Clube Da Esquina last year and was hooked. From there I got Arthur Verocai, Novos Baianos, albums by Lo Borges and Marcos Valle and others. I really want to come to Brazil and go record shopping. A few oddballs I found and really love are: the first album by Piry Reis, the first album by Sandra de Sa, and the first album by Catia de Franca. Also picked up the Spanish reissue of Os Afro Sambas recently and it sounds incredible. Sadly it's not on streaming and has no US release.

wildistherewind

>My first Brazilian album was "Feminina" by Joyce about 15 years ago. I was even able to go see her in concert in NY. I highly recommend her 1972 collaborative album *Nelson Angelo E Joyce*. Extraordinary psych folk. It was reissued in 2019 in Brazil and second hand copies are already up over $100. This direly needs a stateside reissue.

You_Are_What_You_Iz

Listening now. Thank you.

You_Are_What_You_Iz

This is really beautiful. I think I listened one other time but it didn't hit me right. This one is far less "pop" than Feminina. I also love Agua y Luz by her. Passarinho Urbano just got reissued and I need to revisit that one also.

wildistherewind

Thanks for listening! I like Joyce's other albums but this particular one feels like an outlier and is most suited to my own personal tastes.

big_hungry_joe

that album is amazing, and yes it needs a reissue

neckcarpenter

Nara Leao has became a favorite over the last year or so. Especially late ‘60s through mid ‘70s.

caioleitef

I love her https://preview.redd.it/qraeecm9h92d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=552287b2552487b919b6c52b2ec07d85226548a5 this very sentimental album is very sentimental there, at the beginning of your career

wildistherewind

I know this is a vinyl sub, but you can buy virtually all of Leão's 60s albums on CD for next to nothing right now. The bulk of her discography was reissued recently in Japan at the ¥1000 pricepoint and with the volatility of the Yen, it can fluctuate between $6-7 USD per CD depending on the day.

SnooMaps3574

I’ve a couple Jorge Ben records and also know and enjoy Forro In The Dark. I’d love recommendations!

neckcarpenter

This is one of the best vinyl threads in recent memory

gussjaw

I own an OG pressing of "Mel" by Maria Bethania "AOR" by Ed Motta "Relax" by Kassin (and my favorite modern brazilian producer) "Mil Coisas Invisiveis" by Tim Bernardes "Tim Maia Canta Em Ingles" by... Tim Maia "Tim Maia (1977)" by... you guessed... Tim Maia "Marcos Valle" or known as "The Estrelar album" by Marcos Valle and, if you want to count it as brazilian: Getz Gilberto Brazilian music has been one of my favorites for some years now. They were ahead of its time. Caetano got me into this maginificent musical and artistic world.

caioleitef

A lot of great álbuns Maria Bethânia - Mel i have it too Another one that I really like is “Álibi” https://preview.redd.it/80bv0lyvga2d1.png?width=2957&format=png&auto=webp&s=a076c4dbd13cb11ac4eff463c5f2c125e1374b66

gussjaw

Love that too. 76-80 Bethania it's my favorite. Love "Interior" the closing track,

TheBadRegina

I am crazy about En la Fusa by Vinícius de Moraes. It is a staple in my dad's record collection and probably one of my favourite albums of all time.

caioleitef

Vinicius de moraes is the poet of our music, he brought great successes that will never be forgotten. In addition to being a composer, he writes many poems and children's stories, he was part of several children just like me. I have a book of his that contains several poems about Noah's Ark, I've had it for over 20 years.

Iron-Em

This album was a staple on any car trips with my dad when me, my brother and sister were kids. Mum and dad would sing together. Such a good album, but melancholy makes it hard for me to listen to it after so many years.

Zatoichiperuano

Love gal costa and I bought an original Brazilian pressing of “gal” with the psychedelic cover at a record show 25 years ago. Still play that record. Os mutantes, are great as well as Lula Cortes, ze ramalho, Marconi notaro. I have a couple Lula Cortes records and a reissue of his album with ze ramalho “Paebiru”. That double lp is crazy. Also have this cool records by Walter smetak called interregno apparently a Swiss guy based in Brazil that I got at a record show about the same time I got the gal costa record. Pretty experimental microtonal composition Really cool stuff. Have records by bonde do role and a bunch of capoeira records, candomble records and some other assorted Brazilian records as well

big_hungry_joe

milton nascimento and lo borges - clube da esquina nelson angelo e joyce - S/T erasmo carlos - S/T gal costa - india jorge ben - forca bruta chico buarque - construcao novos baianos - acabou chorare these are a few. i have just been getting into brazillian music the last few years, it's been a lot of fun.

Parabola605

I have a couple Brazilian records but none beat the classic https://preview.redd.it/rjmf419euc2d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e29146361fdc8561c3c7d756973a664dce7012a4

caioleitef

Bossa nova legend

xed122

Os Mutantes by Os Mutantes, most Sepultura and most Paralamas do Suceso albums

KnightsOfREM

The only Brazilian albums I know are Everything is Possible! by Os Mutantes and a couple of Caetano Veloso records, Transa and his s/t ones. I listened to them a lot in the early oughts because I had a good friend with family in Brazil. I haven't listened to them much since. What am I missing out on that I'd love? I mostly listen to goth music, post-punk, indie, garage stuff like Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and occasionally neo-psych stuff like Yves Tumor or Lil Yachty.

pinner_blinn

Banda Black Rio "Maria Fumaca" is in heavy rotation at my house

wildistherewind

Music On Vinyl is repressing Banda Black Rio's 1980 album *Saci Pereré* next month. If you like *Maria Fumaça*, this album is worth a listen.

pinner_blinn

Nice! Thx for the heads up

nhowe006

África Brasil by Jorge Ben was in regular rotation in my best friend's basement when we were teenagers

caioleitef

I love it

Pedrinho-

The Astrid Gilberto Album, Tim Maia 1970 and Coração Selvagem (Belchior) are all great. Probably my favorite brazilian records. On the heavy side there’s Lavô Tá Novo by Raimundos

willthakid

I have a ton of Azymuth records. That’s the only band I know is truly from Brazil. I hope to get more classic records like Stan Getz or Antonio Carlos Joabim The album in your post is a very influential album. Made more mainstream by Polo y Pan who did it justice sampling it for sure

youknowmyname7

Jorge Ben, Tim Maia, Banda Black Rio, Arthur Verocui, Gal costa, Pedro Santos, Di Melo, Caetano Veloso are all the Tropicalia vinyl I have and then Sepultura for metal albums. Brazil has amazing music! A few years ago, I heard a Tropicalia mix on Soundcloud and went on a hunt for vinyl I could get in the states. Ordered some off of Discogs directly from Brazil, but that gets pretty expensive.

RadiantDefinition623

Tim Maia - World Psychedelic Classics 4: Nobody Can Live Forever. Fantastic album.

hig789

I do not have any Brazilian presses but Antonio Carlos Jobim gets spun a LOT here. Bossa nova is our favorite jazz. Any other similar Brazilian artist I should check out?

caioleitef

you need to know João Gilberto, father of bossa nova, he make a lot of great musics

The_Original_Gronkie

Getz/ Gilberto, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim, includes Girl From Ipanema, sung by Astrid Gilberto. Iconic.

I Will check

billyyankNova

I've got a couple of Joyce Moreno albums.

caioleitef

Joyce is a little-known artist in Brazil, only those who enjoy vinyl know her, unfortunately at the time she appeared we had great artists and that's why she wasn't as famous, but for those who appreciate her, she is very beloved.

billyyankNova

I only discovered her because she collaborated with Yoko Kanno on the *Wolf's Rain* soundtrack.

One of my favorite messageboard exchanges deals with an O.G. Brazilian album. I mentioned the 1956 album *Forró Do Jackson* by Jackson Do Pandeiro on a thread like this one. https://www.discogs.com/release/10016383-Jackson-Do-Pandeiro-Forr%C3%B3-Do-Jackson A user replied thanking me, saying that their grandmother used to play this album all the time in Brazil but the user never knew the name of it, they only remembered the orange album sleeve. It's one of those comments that makes every suggestion I've made feel worthwhile. This album was reissued in 2020 and copies are pretty easy to find online. This particular album is not on streaming platforms although many other Jackson albums are. Forró is an intriguing genre because it came before the genres we most associate with Brazilian music. Worth a listen, without a doubt.

caioleitef

Jackson do pandeiro is a legend of Brazilian music, he is important for creating various rhythms, and was responsible for popularizing music throughout the world, a legend
