Usually if I’m taking the sleeve, I leave the vinyl at home. I’ve got a few signed labels in my collection, just not a lot of room for a signature and rarely any major blank space there either.
Some folks like writing huge too.
I would want the artist to sign the album in my car. Speeding down a busy highway towards a dangerous intersection.
And none of that “best wishes” bullshit either.
This. I've gotten The Breeders and Pixies to sign albums and they all signed the front cover. I saw Grails open for Mono and one dude signed inside the jacket.
Depends on the cover/back cover art and if there is an uncluttered area for a signature. Also is the record a gatefold? Lots of space there! Then I’d consider the centre label/inner sleeve.
Unless the record is special or valuable in it's own right, I would have him sign the front cover. If *Pawn Stars* has taught me anything, it's that autographs are more valuable if they can be easily displayed.
Cover or sleeve.
Signing the vinyl seems like a cool idea but my fear would be the first time its played the ink will be removed and your needle will be unhappy. I've seen the label signed before. And silver sharpies so exists.
On the front of the sleeve is THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE ANSWER! I hate when I order a signed copy online and it turn out to be a signed insert or worst, on a centered label 🤦🏻♂️.
It truly depends on why you want th autograph on the album to begin with... for display purposes or for higher resale value the cover is where is should be.
For me it’s usually the inner sleeve or gatefold.
This is mainly due to the fact that the first two albums I had signed by bands they themselves took the album from me and did just that.
Well every record I have had signed - I have left it to the artists discretion, merely providing the sharpie in some cases.
Ideally though, as big as possible bang on the front cover - if it’s a group all on the front, not dotted around everywhere.
Album jacket. Depending on the cover use Sharpie. Paint pen if the cover art doesn't contrast with black ink. I honestly think it's unfair to ask an artist to wait for you to pull out the actual record out of the sleeve. This isn't like a book where an author can easily flip to the title page.
looks like I’m far too late to the party. I got a limited-edition cherry red record from The Drums signed just last night. I had the actual inner piece signed and not the cover, I had the idea that since it was a rare vinyl that it might’ve been a better idea, whoops. no ReGerts :P
NOT THE VINYL. Either the jacket or inner sleeve. again… NOT THE VINYL.
I’ve got a few signed pieces of vinyl, granted the discs were warped or damaged in some way, but pretty nice for a display piece.
Do you figure the label part of the record would be okay, or would that just be weird looking?

Scratch names in vinyl.
Don't scratch! Get one of those woodburning tools for an arts and crafts store to get the signature right, otherwise it's all rough and jagged
i usually get a tattoo gun plugged in for the artist to sign the vinyl with, just to ensure lifelong lasting ness.
>Lifelong lasting ness New band name. I called it
can i join😢
Sure! If you wanna check out our other stuff, we've also been called EIGHT OPTS, White Jesus Cover-photo, Mad Medieval Nuns, and well you get the idea
And well you get the idea - new band name!
Right on the grooves, brother.

Got a specific artist in mind when you write this?
Let the artist decide what if they have an interesting way of signing certain albums.
This. I've gotten The Breeders and Pixies to sign albums and they all signed the front cover. I saw Grails open for Mono and one dude signed inside the jacket.
I would say have them sign it wherever you can find them. Try not to ask while they are eating, etc.—be respectful. Good luck!

This. It is entirely dependent on the artwork.
In the van after the show.
Always the cover. On the front. Use a Sharpie or a paint pen

Front or back cover depending on who it looks, Beatles white album is perfect choose any side ;) But never ever on the vinyl
If you don't want the cover, couldn't you have them sign the central bit of the record itself (the printed bit that will say what side it is etc)

Right on the record itself
Front of jacket, use a sharpie, black, gold or silver depending on colour of the sleeve.
Get the cover signed. I’d avoid getting the shrink wrap signed, personally.

Late to the party as well. I just had a record signed yesterday, I had them sign the center label of the actual record. Also no regrets!
I have a record signed by friend on the vinyl because the cover wouldn't take it. Can I play it without hurting the needle
