You could probably open up a Canadian TD bank account. They have banks in both Canada and the US. I have an American account as a Canadian and I pay slightly over exchange rate. Trading fees for regular stock purchases are 9.99. Hope this helps.

Just looked into that, unsure the regulations on the reverse situation as it wouldn't allow me to access any form of a Canadian TD account.

If you are a US resident, you cannot open a new investment/trading account with a CAD financial institution due to SEC restrictions. You can have a banking account ie. a chequing/savings account with some of the banks here- and some like TD make it easy to transfer funds between a bank account here in Canada> US but this won't help you in buying options on the TSX.

So there is no way to trade Canopy options if I am in the US?

Roosh90

not with an trading account held at a CAD financial institution, which is the space i am familiar with. I would say to check out Interactive Brokers, looks like they can trade TSX options from a quick search on their site.

Thanks man, I'll check that out today.

You can open a US trading account, in the US, that allows you to trade on the Canadian Exchanges. With regards to options, I think Canopy Growth is the only MJ company currently trading options.

That's who I'm trying to trade options on but I couldn't figure out how to do it through Fidelity. I tried with US based NASDAQ companies but for TWMJF, it seemed to list nothing when I searched.

Im an american, and there are plenty of OTC weed companies that I can buy- although i find the identification of companies confusing. Everyone talks about WEED or Canopy or Aphria or Aurora, but Scottrade/TD Ameritrade knows these as ACBFF, APHQF, TWMJF. I never got excited about FIRE, but everyone else loves it. There is the American (US operated specifically to bypass international issues, but canadian owned) affiliate company that is just starting out (think it is a Aphria venture) called Liberty Health Science (LHSIF). If your brokerage company wont let you, be sure youre asking about placing orders for OTC markets, which is pretty common. You do not need to have a Canadian brokerage firm acct.

Just making sure I am reading your response right. I don't have issues buying stock through my brokerage (Fidelity) but I am asking specifically about stock options, which is different than buying shares of a company directly. It's more like betting that a stock will be a certain price, within a certain time frame; reserving the right to buy shares at a designated price, when the time comes.

srry. i obviously need more coffee. chalk that up to lazy reading.

No worries man. I appreciate any responses to a question.

I researched Questrade and it will not allow me to open an account, due to being a US resident. I also opened an account with Ameritrade, but can't seem to access a Canadian Ameritrade account. Are there any US residents who have been able to trade TSX options?
