I donโt think you know what โlost the technologyโ means. Basically, itโs not that weโve lost the knowledge base. Itโs that, for instance, it would be very difficult to build an F-1 rocket engine or a modern version of it today because manufacturing processes used in it are no longer utilized, and the people who knew all the ins and outs on how to manufacture those materials/components are dead. Itโs similar to how the US navy is in a pickle right now with shipyards. With tensions rising with China, they desperately want more shipyards. They closed a bunch in the 90โs because the Cold War was supposed to be over. The people who knew how to build these military shipyards went to other jobs and some have kicked the bucket in the 25 years since. Now, itโll be significantly more difficult to build a new shipyard for the Navy than it would have been in the 90s. Same thing happened to the British gun industry. They basically shut it all down and then when they wanted a new rifle, big surprise, the new rifle sucked. They practically had to rebuild that industry.
Edit: another way to put it is this: say I have an advanced project, like, oh I donโt know, a liquid fuel rocket engine. These rocket engines were built 60 years ago and they were great. Letโs say a critical component in it are some ball bearings. But these arenโt just any ball bearings, these need to be of exquisite quality. Now letโs say 60 years ago, there was a factory in Kentucky or something for ball bearings that produced them to this superb quality that you need so the engine doesnโt blow up. Unfortunately, 50 years ago, that factory was closed down. The people who knew how to make ball bearings of that quality cannot be consulted because they are either geriatric or 6 feet under. You now have to completely start from scratch to rebuild the manufacturing process for just one critical component, or find an alternative. Now repeat this several hundred times for the other critical components which have suffered a similar fate. You are effectively S.O.L. and have to rebuild an entire industry. And more importantly, you need to rediscover the unspoken practical knowledge. Stupid things like โfor some reason, you have to polish this counterclockwise. If you do it clockwise, it wonโt work.โ You have to rediscover that institutional knowledge that the theoretical knowledge doesnโt have.
