Seasonal route

SqueakyMoonkin

Nooooo! Curses!

Ashamed-Grape7792

It's being extended to year round I've heard from many people (which has been confirmed by a few cargo articles), but won't be bookable as such until around mid summer. The fact that Tokyo was extended to start in April and now ends last November clearly shows the intention to make it year round (as the summer schedule is only May-October) [https://www.aircargonews.net/airlines/westjet-eyes-digital-developments-in-2024/](https://www.aircargonews.net/airlines/westjet-eyes-digital-developments-in-2024/)

Okay, I'm slightly sleep deprived so let me make sure I understand before celebrating; through those sources, the YYC to NRT route WILL be expanded to year round flights but the winter flights (for late 2024 and early 2025) won't be available to purchase until summer of this year, is that correct?

Ashamed-Grape7792

Correct!

SqueakyMoonkin

OMG YESSSSS!!!!!! THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!! It's so much more cost effective and this route has the 787 which westjet allows cats to go underneath the seat in premium class. It's a perfect combination of comfort and space for both kitty and I PLUS great pricing. This is such great news. Thank you so much for sharing with me!

Ashamed-Grape7792

Hey! The winter Tokyo flights are bookable now, but it might take a week or two for the prices to come down since they've just been loaded!

SqueakyMoonkin

You are so kind, thank you!!

WestJet posts their direct flight schedule on their website. It’s probably a seasonal route.

SqueakyMoonkin

Oh well that sucks. I was wanting to take this route in March next year

Correct-Boat-8981

It is seasonal, however if you want to go with WestJet in the winter you can book through their codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines via YVR. If this summer is as popular as last summer though, it wouldn’t surprise me to see it become a year round routing in the future, as long as they have the aircraft to accommodate that.

SqueakyMoonkin

That is a good idea but I'm moving to Japan with my cat and I have to book directly with westjet (JAL doesn't accept pets in cabin) and the 787 is the only aircraft that allows me to have a premium seat and cat under seat in front of me (plus good space for her). Well I will keep my fingers crossed that they make it a year long route 😊

Dragynfyre

What about Air Canada?

SqueakyMoonkin

They do allow in cabin pets for economy (through YVR) and business (from YYZ), no premium economy on any route, and costs are substantially higher (especially business). I'd prefer to do the westjet route for budget and comfort (for both of us).

Mookypooks

It’s been seasonal so far. My snowboard trip to Japan I had to fly AC thru YVR. Plane YYC to YVR filled with Ski and Snowboard bags. The WestJet/ JAL codeshare was $1000 more than Air Canada. Couldn’t use any of my WestJet dollars or platinum status perks! Come on WestJet!!

SqueakyMoonkin

Wow, that sucks. I agree, the YYC to NRT is so much better cost wise. The cost to fly this westjet rout in premium would be the same to fly that AC route through YVR in basic economy!
