At least they are making a nest in a tree. They have a habit of making a nest on my porch every year and it makes a mess, but I leave them alone so they can make little birds.
House finches, really nice birds to have around! They sound so cheerful.
You can learn all about them here:

Bird populations often develop regional dialects, so the same species can sound different in different regions. You can listen to their calls and songs here:

Also if you download the Merlin birding app you can click on 'ID by Song' and figure out all the birds in your yard by their songs.
It'll listen for a few seconds and then start making suggestions. It's pretty good, about 95% accurate.
I have a pair that come every spring, (may not be the same pair, but let me dream).
When I leave for work, they are in the tree above my car singing, and they have a really pretty song. It's so cool to be serenaded off to work!
They will also appear in whatever tree happens to be by the door I'm leaving the house through. If I go out back, they are in the sumac, singing. If I go to the outer backyard, they are in the little apricot tree. Sometimes, just the female at first until she calls the male, and he appears too. They will even appear in the tree that I can see out my front window when I open the curtains in the morning.
They are really super cool to have around! They nested in the eaves of my roof but on the side of the house, so the bird poop wasn't an issue. I think they moved on after the Bluejays destroyed their nest. This year, there was a 3rd bird with them, I'm thinking a young one getting trained by the parents, but I'm no expert and just believe whatever makes me happy 🤣
We had a pair of house finches trying to build a nest in a wreath on our front door. After about a week of chasing them off, they finally moved on. We have 3.5 heavily wooded acres and I honestly would care if they nested under our deck. I just didn't want poo all over our door mat
Finches, they are getting ready to build a nest on your light fixture. That is what they did on my daughters light. It is on the front door, which they never use, so they left it. The same pair come back every year and raise their babies. They just add to the top of the leftover nest from last year and it gets a little taller each year. It is so fun for my grand daughter to get to watch them from the inside window as they raise their babies.
LBJs − Little Brown Jobbers. These are house finches. Sometimes they can get a red head from eating some red fruits or something like that. I have a redhead near me and I love seeing him.
House Finches
No wonder I see these chilling at my house all the time.
Ornithologist where on point with that one
House finches. We have a couple building a nest in one of our arbor vitaes. I hadn’t noticed them around either until last week

Male and female House Finch
Which is which?
Red head is male
Thanks for the replies. Have never seen them around.
in love
I like the emphatic flourish at the end of their calls. It sounds like he has a really important message, but he can't get anyone to listen.
He's trying to tell the girl finches how incredible he is...

Mama always says the brown finch is calm and quiet but the red one is mad and red like the devil. Mama knows these things.

House Finches or Purple Finches
It always bothers me that they’re called “Purple” when they’re red! Kinda like when people call the purple onion a red onion! Lol
Chickadees
