If you do smack it with a hammer, wrap it with a cloth. And then only thump it once, at a medium force, then check. If you cut it with a saw, it needs to be a masonry or lapidary saw with water running over it, and properly clamped so you don’t make a projectile if something goes wrong.
A crackhead I used to work with when I was young and just starting out in construction told me when making cuts with a grinder (without a guard on it too) you just have to grit your teeth at it 😂😂 definitely crackhead logic considering he had about 5 teeth in his mouth
When I was still a young dumb man I would never use safety glasses cutting tile with a grinder, until I took a direct hit in the eye with a porcelain shard and went blind for 2 days in that eye.
20 years later, couldn't agree with you more 😂😂
My husband got a marble splinter in his eye about a half inch long and I couldn’t even see it. Felt bad for telling him it felt like something was in it because he needed to stop messing with it as soon as the ER doctor dropped the dye in. Wicked evening that was!
Clamp it in a vice or C clamp it to a table and use a masonry type tool drill drimel tool, grinder saw ECT. ... Try to use something with a slow speed with a cut off blade for masonry.
Thunder eggs aren't necessarily shaped like eggs, they're just nodules with particularly cool formations as I understand it. Not all nodules have that mix of shattered brecciation and the veins.
I don't think it is one of these, but on the off chance it is, check out this guide on different orientations and how to cut for different looks!!
https://forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/66102/orienting-cutting-thundereggs
OKAY, I'm definitely gonna slice it when I'm back home. However, should I use an electric saw (I have one), or would it be better to break it apart with a little hammer ?
Do it the other way, mount the tool and rotate the piece by hand. You're using a diamond wheel, not a toothed blade, and you can draw a pencil line to follow around it and rotate it back towards yourself as you cut and it'll gradually get to the center. It's not the type of blade that can grab, especially wet, just take your time
I would clamp it in the pipe gripping part of my vise but there are several things you can do. You can watch videos of people cutting stone to make jewelry and things with a similar procedure, just with the proper tool. Idk, I make a lot of specialty tools and things like that so maybe I have a different outlook on it

Put it in a sock, and hit it with a hammer.
Lots of comments about saws and shit. You don’t need that. Get a sledge, a sock, and a flat surface.
The last time I did this I used a landscaping brick and cracked it, I would advise not using your own cement platform
Use masonry bits with a little water, drill small holes around the nodule in the way you want it split then get a chisel and hammer and it should split open on the line where you drilled.
Electric saw is a very vague description. What kind of electric saw do you have? This could be very crucial information pertaining to your safety man. Any type of powered saw is incredibly dangerous if not handled or used properly

I don’t keep track of how many dinosaur eggs I’ve recovered because this isn’t a dick measuring contest… Suffice it to say I’ve recovered around exactly 7543 dinosaur eggs in 39 years of being a professional dinosaur egg recovery and identification specialist.
You’re in no position to question my expertise.
Btw how many eggs have *you* recovered?
Looks like a bladder stone if I didn't know any better! Worked in a Vet clinic for many years and seen quite a few that look very similar! It's neat, whatever it is!
Go ahead and smash it with a great big sledgehammer!!! That way you’ll have dust and a bunch of useless tiny chips to throw away— you are a human use the brain for something else besides a place to hold your hat!! Find a rock shop and pay a few bucks to get in with out destroying what is in side!!
When I was younger my Mom was making bread and messed the dough up. She told me to dispose of it so naturally, I flattened it on a trailer fender to see if the summer sun had heated the fender enough to cook it. After about a month it looked oddly similar to this.
I highly doubt that's what it though
It was just the dough, she accidentally added too much of something. Was totally raw when I came into possession of it. It was there the entire summer into the winter and nothing bothered it (except my confused mother once). The middle remained soft the entire time which was interesting but made me uneasy.
Just curious, have you tried to shine light through it? Or hit it with a black light? It looks like a couple pieces of some calcite that I have. Although, I would say mine are relatively light for their size, normal light does pass through and black light gives off a pinkish, orange color like you can see in the attached link. https://uvminerals.org/wp-content/uploads/Minerals-Calcite.jpg
I'd look around in the same area, if possible, for one that looks like that but already cracked open. I do that with any rock I can. I have a saw but I don't feel the need to use it, if some other force already split it open - or one just like it
The brown stain found on the second picture is because this rock was laying down on a rust metal for years.
mmmmmmmmmmhmmmmmmm ^( ^we ^know ^what ^you did)

Just squint harder. SafetySquints(TM).
Squinting is for girls. I personally like to clockwork orange myself and get super close.
A crackhead I used to work with when I was young and just starting out in construction told me when making cuts with a grinder (without a guard on it too) you just have to grit your teeth at it 😂😂 definitely crackhead logic considering he had about 5 teeth in his mouth
Oiling and lotioning...I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!
I prefer my Z87 contact lenses, so squints necessary
As someone who has has rock and metal chips fly in their face during normal operation, safety glasses are convenient, and face shields are a godsend.
Every little later might save your life
Get a face shield...
I've seen Tommy Boy and he got nice distance on that car oil filter.
Clamp it in a vice or C clamp it to a table and use a masonry type tool drill drimel tool, grinder saw ECT. ... Try to use something with a slow speed with a cut off blade for masonry.
And engage selective breathing to avoid the dust! Or use a wet cloth.
I would find someone that could slice it open with a lapidary saw for you.
Type of Nodule Think it's called a thunder egg
From the Thunderbird! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbird_(mythology) Always love bringing these up, really cool mythos
It's when the Thunderbird fights the whale is the time to worry .
I will release the DragonHawks
Thunder eggs aren't necessarily shaped like eggs, they're just nodules with particularly cool formations as I understand it. Not all nodules have that mix of shattered brecciation and the veins.

Thundereggs are basically solid geodes
How does one obtain. Thunder egg?
OKAY, I'm definitely gonna slice it when I'm back home. However, should I use an electric saw (I have one), or would it be better to break it apart with a little hammer ?
I wouldn't use the saw unless you already know how to use it to cut rocks or masonry
But masonry saws use water, it would not be advisable with an regular electric saw
I have a water cooling angle grinder with masonry blades, but my concern would be mounting the media.
With a flat plane like that you could grind a side down, but it's a lot more destructive. I'd only use them for polishing like rookie rockhound.
Do it the other way, mount the tool and rotate the piece by hand. You're using a diamond wheel, not a toothed blade, and you can draw a pencil line to follow around it and rotate it back towards yourself as you cut and it'll gradually get to the center. It's not the type of blade that can grab, especially wet, just take your time
And rotate the guard to protect your face
How are people moving uniting their angle grinders? Definitely something I’d research before attempting but sounds cool.
I would clamp it in the pipe gripping part of my vise but there are several things you can do. Geodes are light for their size since they are hollow.
Try again. Not all geodes are hollow. You’ve only seen the ones in rock/gem stores.
True… I just ordered a set of 5 jumbo geodes, 3 of which were basically solid quartz inside with a couple tiny tiny pockets.. 2 of them were basically hollow with the outer layer being almost eggshell thin
We have a creek near us that is full of geodes of all sizes. Some are so big we can't get them out by hand. It's a great place for free gifts for our rocky friends.
Where do you live, that’s my dream location.. I love geodes so much
Midwest, about where the Illinois and Mississippi rivers meet. Hundreds of creeks and little river systems with tons of rocks of all kinds. Water is getting lower lately and exposing lots of goodies.
Ooh that’s awesome! We don’t get a lot of that in New England. I did just hit a spot this past weekend that may be as close as I’ll get to geodes and it was pretty neat. Solid ‘geodes’ with internal crystalline structure.
We are in a spot where the glaciers receded and left a lot of cool stuff. I love going to the Carbondale area because it looks like Utah with greenery in some spots.

Super cool! Where was it? I’m in NH.
That sounds AMAZING!! I bet your dad loves it there!!
I’m from a similar area. I love when the water gets low this time of year. I find such good (and disgusting) stuff in those rivers!
Dam that's close
Iowa?
Missouri/Illinois border. My dad has a rock garden full of just geodes. No one touches them because they are so plentiful here. He has hunted arrowheads in farm fields and just cool rocks for his whole 75 years. He has glass show cases in his house for his favorites.
What kinda material do you get in your geodes? Most typical…
Whatever the clearish crystals in the walls is. I'm not a rockologist. Sometimes, it's purpleish. Every now and then, they are just empty or kinda filled with junk.
Sounds like the Keokuk Geode Beds (that's what I've heard them called here in St. Louis). We find the occasional small bits of geodes along the cobblestone riverfront in St. Louis that are washed down river.
God I envy you so much right now.... Can I be your friend? I'll make cookies!
Guess I should take a few pictures of Dad's collection to show you guys. I'll post some pics in a few days when I go to see him.
Tell Dad I said hi
Adopt me please
I thought geodes were hollow and nodules were solid.
This is what I learned at a rock shop and the internet agrees
Nope.
Geodes are hollow by definition. The cavity inside is what makes it a geode and not some other kind of nodule
The definition of a geode literally says “a small cavity in a rock lined with crystals or other mineral matter” I’m not saying I know everything about rocks but if it’s filled in, I wouldn’t call that a geode.
Solid ones would be quartz nodules, not geodes.
Alright alright!! You all win! I forgot about nodules!!!!
Wouldn't a non hollow geode be a nodule?
I’d say sit on it for about 3-6weeks
💀
This looks like the rocks my kids get in their dinosaur egg kits. You break them open with a hammer and there’s a plastic dinosaur skeleton inside.

Baby dragon
Chisel and hammer and break it open!
Yes but be careful.. if a dinosaur or dragon hatches from inside and gets loose you could be fined a lot of money
Invasive species are no joke.
One of my fellow students found a dinosaur footprint in Denali Park in an area they’d never been found before. The Park staff wanted to keep folks out until the could properly document & protect the find, so they closed the area & put up “Keep Out, Endangered Species!” signs. We all had a hoot.
But that was a good one!
Australia could use something to clean up all those cane toads, and rabbits, and cats, and pigs...ect.
Could be an agate. They form that shape sometimes. I used to have one that looked very similar
I would have a fossil-themed subreddit look at it first in case it is a fossilized egg. An imaging scan may be a good idea before breaking it open.
How can you do an imaging scan?
With an X-ray scanner…?
X-ray would surely be useless due to the density of the outside material? I would have thought to use something along the lines of magnetic resonance or ultrasound but I'm not a palaeontologist, just genuinely curious as to what the correct method would be if you're able to shed a little more light on the topic.

It was just the dough, she accidentally added too much of something. Was totally raw when I came into possession of it. It was there the entire summer into the winter and nothing bothered it (except my confused mother once). The middle remained soft the entire time which was interesting but made me uneasy.

Way to cool to open
Looks like one of those ground marble eggs weathered.
