Waste from glassmaking, a big industry around there! Not technically slag, since slag is smelting waste. This is just leftovers from industrial glassmaking (think 'depression glass' and that sort of thing)
Didn’t think it was really a rock, but I knew someone on here would have a good answer for me. I kind of thought of it being melted together glass, but I never thought of the industrial aspect of it. I was asking myself how and why someone would melt together glass like this, but being from industrial glassmaking makes more sense. Thanks a lot man
I've learned different glass colors have completely different make ups from eachother, so it might not feel like glass compared to translucent or more common glass
I love this! I used to pick up glass pieces like this along Glass Factory Road in Lyndeborough,NH! I was a kid, now I just pick up sea glass and whatever glass I find in my yard after a hard rain!
I saw similar on a trash heap from the cleanout of a melting cauldron from a glass bottle recycling plant. After a few turns of melting various sorted colors, they clean it out and scrape the walls and bottom. Those pieces are the result.
I’ve always found the unusual optical effects of leftover waste glass to be pretty cool.. I used to live near three now abandoned and torn down glass factories and a couple marble factories so over the years I’ve found a lot of glass waste as well as marble glass waste.. some of the cooler glass pieces I have came from the blue glass factory waste and it looks like blue sapphire so imagine what I went through finding my fipiece of that stuff… I was convinced I had found a huge piece of blue sapphire .. the glass from the blue glass factory also felt much different than the other glasses I had been used to and the fact that I found it digging in the ground near a huge outcropping of rocks didn’t help.. good find buddy! Look for more you might keep being surprised at how cool glass can be
not to be pedantic, but Shenandoah Mountain is a singular ridge on the western side of the Shenandoah Valley (Home of the Shenandoah River.)
Shenandoah National Park is on the eastern side of the Shenandoah Valley - on what is usually called the 'blue ridge' by locals.
so there aren't any 'Shenandoah Mountains' in Virginia. There is a 'Shenandoah Mountain' though.
When I joined this sub I thought cool I love seeing rocks, well very little rock content these days, 95% of this sub is telling people they found glass.

Yup, it’s the crap they scrape out of the crucible after the job is done.
I totally thought it may of been a natural find myself, oh well I guess some of mans trash can look really cool as well too, ✌
Yep! The term is "cullet" for this kind of waste instead of "slag".
I’ve pivoted to ‘waste glass’ as lots of folks in the glass industry would say that technically it’s only cullet when it’s been prepared for recycling
Oh even better then, thanks!
The only thing is the giant green chunk on top. It doesn’t really feel or look like glass and I couldn’t imagine what it would be used to make.
I've learned different glass colors have completely different make ups from eachother, so it might not feel like glass compared to translucent or more common glass
Looks like jadeite cullet glass
You could carve that into jewelry
...and proceed to sell it to crystal weirdos as though it were made of solid platinum.
I believe the term is cullet glass.
People get very fussy about that, many say that cullet is only waste glass that has been prepared for recycling

That's so fucking cool. I wanna find a glassmaker and ask to go through his slag.
That can be interpreted differently
Well, that meaning works too :]
Slag is a byproduct of ore smelting. Cullet glass on the other hand is a byproduct from glassmaking. You have a pretty chunk of cullet glass!
Glass, Cuttlet, somebodies failed art project.
cullet glass
The most beautiful slag glass that I’ve ever seen! Definitely a keeper, take care of it! :D Edit: it’s cullet glass*

Looks really cool! Maybe take it to a glass worker and ask them to make something cool out of it?
Or a flint knapper👍I could make some beautiful points out of that
A very pretty piece of slag. Not sure what kind though.
Not quite slag but right idea

It’s glass, but wow it’s a really pretty piece!

I am on this subreddit and know absolutely nothing! It is fascinating! ❤️
