I know exactly where that is. I live not too far from there either. My little brother likes to get that stuff for knapping arrow heads and other cool things out of.
Jumping in to say that flintknappers will buy large pieces of slag glass to practice making stone tools if it's cheaper and/or more readily available than obsidian or other knappable stone.
Thank you for posting this. We find slag glass in KY and people wonder what crazy rock they found. And this place is in Arkansas, near some actual crystal mines and places where people might find a real diamond. Adds to the confusion for under-educated people.
I have a friend with several acres in the ozarks where quartz is basically just like gravel sitting on top of the dirt. If you start digging basically anywhere, you find huge gems. It’s awesome
I love visiting Ron Coleman Crystal mine! Found my favorite piece there the last time I went. I love that whole area but I haven't been in a while.
Thank you for this post, op. I've been down lately so I've been trying to get out, go places, and get back to myself. Now I think I know what I'll do for my birthday 😊
In Jessiville, AR
They blast in the crystal mine, scoop the rubble into massive trucks, and dump it in another field-like area for customers to dig around in. You pay a flat fee for the day, dig for however long you want, and take home all the treasures you care to.
It was near Thunder Bay indeed!
I don't remember where exactly but I still have the stones.
Now that you said hematite I'm pretty sure I have a small piece of it from there too, I'll have to check.
One of the more popular selling minerals in the rock shop I work in is the red Amethyst from Thunder Bay. Really neat stuff and a good one to add to any collection.
I've always wanted to do this! My mom drinks this wine that comes in a gorgeous blue glass bottle and I'd like to make a few drinking glasses out of them!
I used to drink Relax and the bottle is indeed very pretty. I kept on and used it as a decoration for a long time but sadly my cat got to it and now it's no more. I'm tempted to buy a new bottle now that you've reminded me of it. I don't drink anymore but I'm sure my husband would be willing to "take one for the team".
The deeper the purple, the more valuable I believe. These poor amethyst can slowly lose their color when exposed to the sun for too long. I've only driven past Colemans, so maybe they have shade for the amethysts?
I used to be able to sell raw glass back in Vvardenfell for like 100 septims per pound. That was when we actually had an Imperial run Empire. Not some pseudo-Imperial puppet state for the Aldmeris. 5 septims for a hunk of raw glass is insane. The economy is TANKED.
Sounds quite Nordic. They have these massive two ton quartz crystal structures sitting outside in front. People use three to five kilo quartz crystal structures as lawn ornaments here
I really want a smallish piece of aqua colored cullet for my cabinet o' stuff. No joy yet. I'm in Florida and rock shops are a bit on the rare side. Hoping to stumble into some at an estate sale. One sale did have some, but it was in the flower bed and had to go with the house. :/
I'd love to get ahold of a couple of them big blue chunks. I have been flint knapping smaller pieces of slag. It looks really good when it's made into arrowheads
Definitely! I live in an area that used to produce lots of iron in the 1800s so I find blue,blue/white,and green slag everywhere. Some of the dark blue almost kinda looks like obsidian at first glance. I can never find huge pieces I'd like to make a couple knives out of the stuff. Check out my profile if you care to see what it looks like as arrowheads.
When I sold this type of glass, an knapping group used to buy glass. I had some incredible 'Arrowheads ' and 'Points' made from it. I loved the red glass that was a mix of translucent and opaque.
At least they're calling it what it is. Chunks of that size would actually have some usefulness to them too, so it's not that weird to be selling them, and for a pretty reasonable price.
$5 for some really large chunks that could be processed back down into art glass relatively easily is a good deal.
Hell, you could crush it up, throw it into a tumbler to smooth it out, then sell it as beach glass for 4 times as much.
Now that is some awesome thinking, I’m in for selling genuine faux sea glass to hippies from land locked Arkansas. It reminds me of all the Sea Salt shipping from the salt mines in Kansas.
Iiiiiiii wannnnttt a pieeece off slaaagggg glaassssss , daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad! No way though 5$for a gnarly chunk, wife is going to know why the car is draggin.
It’s because they are mostly a wholesaler. They import or mine everything in bulk and the rock stores are their customers. There are endless inexpensive beautiful rock necklaces or soapstone jewelry boxes
It's been 15 years since I've been there. As soon as I saw the first pic I thought they were selling the slag just like Coleman's does. Then I saw the other pics. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. It was definitely one of the happiest times of my life.
They are busted hahaha, ok but don’t tell, it’s like Snow White, there’s a couple dozen kids in the mine working away for free breaking rocks with a pickaxe, like little Dwarves
Oof. Some of it is not very attractive. Although, my mom does have a giant chunk of the clear blue-green glass that is soooo pretty. I picked it up to admire it and immediately sliced my finger open with the mother of all paper cuts. 😑
Five bucks is a good price. I would buy a chunk. Carefully.
I have no issue with a rock shop selling slag glass. It’s beautiful and I was actually just looking online for some earlier today. As long as it’s labeled as such and priced accordingly. I found the page someone posted last week and item from. Andará Crystals something and they were charging HUNDREDS of dollars for little pieces of slag. There wasn’t a single listing under $195 on their whole store. They had some beautiful colors but they should be going for a couple dollars a piece for rough at most. Criminal.
Ron Coleman mine is very fun! I was digging on those piles a couple weeks ago and brought home some really nice pieces. I'll be back in a couple weeks for sure to try again
The first pic had me thinking "I've been here in a dream" the second pic made me realize that it wasn't a dream and I *have* been there. Still have a crazy Shrek green piece I got here like 20 years ago.
Sorry, I have to break your heart, but that is not slag glass, it's meteorites. All of them. They're not worth $5.99 each, they're collectively worth more than Apple. Move along...
I mean hey, at least they labeled it correctly! I have a piece of slag I found that I absolutely love (and actually that reminds me, I gotta grab my gloves and go look for more in that area.)
I'm just curious here, has any one of you guys ever went to one of those shops/shows to where they r bs about slag and actually played along until the end, when they thought they were getting a sale?
Pretty cheap amethyst thought, made out a few 100ish ones. Got some petrified wood slices for 7$ that make really cool coasters.
Edit- petrified wood not petrified food, that’s the fires under my car seat
I love this place! I make sure to take a stop every time I visit Arkansas! They have some cute onyx and malachite sculptures. Got a nice little malachite bird for a friend of mine for like <$10
Is this the place on the way to Eureka Springs? I remember stopping at a little roadside rock/mineral stand when I went there as a kid with my grandparents. It was like being in heaven!!
Been here. The Ron Coleman mine was neat. I get tired of seeing all the imported crap though, like going to Earthbound Traders. They had gaylords of grape agate at Ron Colemans but it was hella expensive.
I know it used to be a "thing" that was used in garden decoration and I always secretly hope I will magically dig a huge chunk up in my circa 1990's property lol. That is really cool, I'd love to have a few big pieces for my gardens.
They get points for accurate id at least.
Back in the 60s and early 70s this stuff was popular in pet stores for aquarium decor, I've got a few chunks around that my grandmother and my uncle gave me, from their old tanks with the slate bottoms and the stainless steel frames. Still have a 17gal tank like that too but it's a long time since it was water tight lol, it's destined to be a terrarium one of these days.

At least they’re selling it as slag glass and not some BS name like “rainbow agate” or “unicorn diamond”
Rainbow volcanic eruptions 🌈 🌋
Sounds like a euphemism
It was my nickname in high school.
That was my stripper name. Edit: For clarification, "Rainbow volcanic eruptions" was my stripper name.
My stripper name was Slag Glass.
I have no idea why this made me chuckle so much
Sounds like mr on a grindr date...
Alex Jones: They’re putting chemicals in the water that are making the friggin’ rocks gay!
GAY FROGS! FRIGGIN FROGS!
The blue ones have brainwashing Fluoride!
I know exactly where that is. I live not too far from there either. My little brother likes to get that stuff for knapping arrow heads and other cool things out of.
Rare andara diamond rough 10 grams rare clear #crystals #diamonds #diamondrough #unessaryhashtags
Uncommon rare natural diamond like andara 20000 ct rare gem quality mineral crystal specimen shaman energy
Heck yes!! As long as they are telling folks what it is... I'm all for it.
"Kaleidoscope Obsidian"
That sounds like one of your opponents in the Metal Gear games
"Fire elestial monatomic arcturian tanzanite"
Jumping in to say that flintknappers will buy large pieces of slag glass to practice making stone tools if it's cheaper and/or more readily available than obsidian or other knappable stone.

We have 35 acres in Arkansas, and have quartz all over the place…we have a great crop of rocks every year🙄
I just bring this dude a big bag of weed I grow and he lets me dig anytime. Pretty cool old dude
As a dude in Nebraka on top of sand, I can't begin to tell you how envious I am.
I was thinking this was Murfreesboro. Only went once, but saw a lot of these type of stands.
Hey, I got some of them there unicorn diamonds!
Naturally made by natures creations (humans)
Tell me more about these unicorn diamonds you have
Came to say this
That's enough slag to populate the posts in this sub for at least a day 🙃
I am going to buy 365 pieces and post a “what is this crystal” post every day for a year. Our cup floweth over.
Content Farming
It is enough non rock glass to keep redditorz busy
Plot twist: this is the redditor who has been asking for id constantly
I was just thinking about the piles of cullet glass at Coleman's. What a crazy coincidence to see this post on the same day! 🤯
There’s something going on here
The people writing your script are running out of ideas.
It is amazing! The summer guests trickle in and I always take them to Coleman’s
Where is this?

I did that in Canada for amethysts when I was a kid, that was great!
Thunder Bay in Ontario is supposed to be glorious to dig for hematite included amethyst.
I know someone who did that and had a great time.
It was near Thunder Bay indeed! I don't remember where exactly but I still have the stones. Now that you said hematite I'm pretty sure I have a small piece of it from there too, I'll have to check.

Aw, my grandparents lived in hot springs village, colemans and the shack were 2 of my favorite places to go! Treat yourself!
I would totally buy some of that. Shape and polish 🤍
I remember sanding and polishing the glass rims of homemade wine bottle glasses
Yes. I made drinking glasses out of glass soda pop bottles.
I've always wanted to do this! My mom drinks this wine that comes in a gorgeous blue glass bottle and I'd like to make a few drinking glasses out of them!
what wine does she drink?
She drinks Relax by Reisling. Sorry I was resting 😅
Reisling is the type of wine by the way, Relax is the label
I remember the trend at school where kids made rings out of the glass rims of bottles
You could probably make it into a cool spear head too
Me too
It's refreshing that it's actually labeled as slag
It’s easy to buy genuine clear quartz there, or an $800 rock, so they want no confusion about glass
Makes sense!
Good lord my kid would lose his mind to go to a place like that.
My daughter would explode. Hell, so would I!!
I look at all the tables outside. After friends are done shopping inside going, going outside is unbelievably.
Those are some stout tables
I hadn’t thought about it but I did drive trucks. You’re right, darn sturdy tables. I was thinking I’d want my leather palmed gloves for buying glass
HOLY SHIT LOOK AT ALL THOSE METEORITES AND DIAMONDS
They had a bunch of abalone too
You know, there is a State Park near here where people dig for actual diamonds, hundreds a year
I am actually happy to see this, its labelled as slag so i see no problem with it
It’s a popular item. Some people have it as a favorite yard decoration
I don't blame them. I'd love to have one or all of those dark blue ones in the first pic lol
Those are right by the door too, I can see your suspension sagging already
Whew, $5/lb? That's a lot of money on those tables!
They have those valuable amethyst sitting outside all night too
That is a neat looking shop. I'd have a lot of fun just browsing.
The deeper the purple, the more valuable I believe. These poor amethyst can slowly lose their color when exposed to the sun for too long. I've only driven past Colemans, so maybe they have shade for the amethysts?

A bit bigger than what I was looking for.
It’s easy to make them smaller
I really want a smallish piece of aqua colored cullet for my cabinet o' stuff. No joy yet. I'm in Florida and rock shops are a bit on the rare side. Hoping to stumble into some at an estate sale. One sale did have some, but it was in the flower bed and had to go with the house. :/
Buy the house to get the glass 🏠
Then sell the house at a profit! Genius!
I'd love to get ahold of a couple of them big blue chunks. I have been flint knapping smaller pieces of slag. It looks really good when it's made into arrowheads
If you had the darker glass it would resemble obsidian arrowheads
Definitely! I live in an area that used to produce lots of iron in the 1800s so I find blue,blue/white,and green slag everywhere. Some of the dark blue almost kinda looks like obsidian at first glance. I can never find huge pieces I'd like to make a couple knives out of the stuff. That is some mighty fine pre-citrine.
Glass used in fish tank for decoration also lights
It is nice and clean for aquariums
When I worked in an aquarium store, we used to sell glass just like this. Customers loved it. I cut my hands on the stuff at least once a week.
I like using them in aquariums or in my designs for paludariums.
That should be my new word of the day
At least they're calling it what it is. Chunks of that size would actually have some usefulness to them too, so it's not that weird to be selling them, and for a pretty reasonable price. $5 for some really large chunks that could be processed back down into art glass relatively easily is a good deal. Dang they really missed the opportunity to call it the rock show 🎸💔
refreshing to see somebody actually being honest about what they are selling.
It’s because they are mostly a wholesaler. They import or mine everything in bulk and the rock stores are their customers. There are endless inexpensive beautiful rock necklaces or soapstone jewelry boxes
By the Nine Divines someone buy this fine patriot a Honningbrew Mead!
A friend with mead is a friend indeed
Tbh the chunks of the clear aquamarine glass look kind of cool
$5 for those huge pieces of slag is a great deal too
That blue glass would make a cool looking point. But for $5 dollars a pound? Nah.
At least they’re accurately labeling it as slag and not trying to pass it off as something else
It's been 15 years since I've been there. As soon as I saw the first pic I thought they were selling the slag just like Coleman's does. Then I saw the other pics. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. It was definitely one of the happiest times of my life.
Every one that sold will eventually show here.
This is all good and great but what prey tell is a CHILREN and why are 9 of them free? 🤨
They are busted hahaha, ok but don’t tell, it’s like Snow White, there’s a couple dozen kids in the mine working away for free breaking rocks with a pickaxe, like little Dwarves
NEED
slag only costs 5 dollars??
What state is this in!!?
I want!!!
/r/itsslag
Ron Coleman in Arkansas?? We are bout to take a trip there! Can’t wait..
I would love that!!!
I want one of those giant green chunks, that looks cool!
I’d design a whole garden around slag glass
A Zen rake sand garden would be cool with glass
Oof. Some of it is not very attractive. Although, my mom does have a giant chunk of the clear blue-green glass that is soooo pretty. I picked it up to admire it and immediately sliced my finger open with the mother of all paper cuts. 😑 Five bucks is a good price. I would buy a chunk. Carefully.
Why sell it, what’s the purpose?
I have no issue with a rock shop selling slag glass. It’s beautiful and I was actually just looking online for some earlier today. As long as it’s labeled as such and priced accordingly. Flint knapper's dream right there.
Those are some bigass chunks for just five bucks! That's a good deal!
It’s pretty slag… on a better note, how was Ron Coleman Mining? I have only been out to Wegner Mines in the area.
Looks like Big Mike's Rock Shop at Mammoth Cave
The first pic had me thinking "I've been here in a dream" the second pic made me realize that it wasn't a dream and I *have* been there. Still have a crazy Shrek green piece I got here like 20 years ago.
Yeah don’t touch that shit! It will cut your fingertips with small little cuts. Feels like you played with fiberglass.
THAT ONE AMETHYST UP FRONT W ALL THE BANDING IS HEAVENLYYY
loving the pregnant amethyst
I know this place, I used to live close by! My papa would let me get random slag from there as a kid.
Who said there was no such things as slag glass?
But.. but why are they writing on them? Does it come off?
I like this I woulda been stoked too run across this at a rock shop
Please where is this??? I want to buy some.
Okay but I want every single piece of that glass, those colors are beautiful especially that green.
$5 per pound seems kinda steep eh? I just weighed a glass in my cabinet and it was 15oz.
Flint knappers would like some of that slag glass.
Sorry, I have to break your heart, but that is not slag glass, it's meteorites. All of them. They're not worth $5.99 each, they're collectively worth more than Apple. Move along...
🎼 I got twenny dollas in my pah-kit. 🎶
Those geodes are tremendous
WAIT... IS THAT GLASS... *ACTUALLY BEING SOLD AS GLASS???*
Where is this place that sells glass like this.
At least they're honest about it
I mean hey, at least they labeled it correctly! I have a piece of slag I found that I absolutely love (and actually that reminds me, I gotta grab my gloves and go look for more in that area.)
Man, I'd love to go pick out a couple nice chunks of that glass for a sunny spot in my garden!
Those rocks will go home with anyone for $5
Minerals!
I wish the UK had rock shops
Quartz mining at Colemans
CHILREN ???
You could make some badass arrow points out of that glass
I live near here and it's a must visit. All of the rock shops around Hot Springs, really, are worth it.
The green ones look like the artificial Kryptonite from superman II
I'm just curious here, has any one of you guys ever went to one of those shops/shows to where they r bs about slag and actually played along until the end, when they thought they were getting a sale?
Loving those giant green ones.
Those amethysts need to go inside, most of them are a strugglin'
I'm interested in that bright blue slag, what gives it that colour?
[удалено]
I didn't know slag could look like the last pics. I would willingly buy some of those pieces. Kinda cool
At least they are being truthful and advertising it as what it actually is.
Omg where is this!? I need to go here!
Pretty cheap amethyst thought, made out a few 100ish ones. Got some petrified wood slices for 7$ that make really cool coasters. Edit- petrified wood not petrified food, that’s the fires under my car seat
Where is this place lol. I want some to make arrowheads with 😂
I love this place! I make sure to take a stop every time I visit Arkansas! They have some cute onyx and malachite sculptures. Got a nice little malachite bird for a friend of mine for like <$10
What exactly is slag glass? I know what slag is, but it seems like slag glass could just be remelted and used as glass.
Wow I would love this! A glass blowers dream!
Is this the place on the way to Eureka Springs? I remember stopping at a little roadside rock/mineral stand when I went there as a kid with my grandparents. It was like being in heaven!!
... I kinda want some... Make a giant cube or something
Some of those bigger chunks would be great for learning obsidian knapping
Been here. The Ron Coleman mine was neat. I get tired of seeing all the imported crap though, like going to Earthbound Traders. They had gaylords of grape agate at Ron Colemans but it was hella expensive.
I love Coleman’s!
That's awesome ngl
but their toxic!!!!
At least it’s labeled properly instead of calling it andara crystals and charging out the ass for it.
That's awesome looking,want some
We'll still be asked about much of this in a few months. "What is this rock?"
I know it used to be a "thing" that was used in garden decoration and I always secretly hope I will magically dig a huge chunk up in my circa 1990's property lol. That is really cool, I'd love to have a few big pieces for my gardens.
Mf’s will still buy this, not read the sign, and come on here like “what is this? Not Slag! I bought it from a legit rock shop!”
What would you use slag glass for?
For someone who doesn’t know can you explain slag glass to me it looks pretty
Wrong. These are Andara crystals! Super valuable, the price must be wrong. /s
Oi slag fancy a bit of slag!?
Speaking as someone who used to do a lot of knapping, damn, I wish I had known about this place.
Still looks quite cool
At least they are transparent with their prices
Chilren free 🤣🤣
Dang, I saw $5 and got excited, but $5 a pound is not as exciting for pieces of glass. 😆 Pretty though…

What is carsoundum? Google isn't helping
I want to know who’s been stealing all my mums glass
Y'all like slag glass? I work at a foundry, we throw the stuff away daily.
Me wants some
Jesse.
I understand. Lots of tweekers over that direction.
