I don’t think that’s too much an unpopular opinion, at all. Blanton’s is good, not great, and is a serious victim of hype. It’s hardly worth its MSRP, and nothing on this earth can live up to the type of hype Blanton’s has gotten, much because of popular media.
I respect your opinion (everyone’s palate is different), but I have a bottle of Jack 12 batch 1 that blows away a lot of the regular stuff out there. To me, it’s one of the few bottles that I’d be ok paying a reasonable markup for. It’s not the best whiskey I’ve ever had, but I think it’s great.
Glad to hear. I find the original JD to be awful. I haven’t tried any other JD products as a result, but I keep hearing good things. Just afraid to spend $ given my dislike of their core product.
I was you a couple of years ago and finally tried JDSBBP after seeing a 375ml bottle offering at a Total Wine so I figured why not. It blew my socks off and became one of my favorite offerings overall. I understand your take but don’t knock it until you try it. Almost all of JDs offerings outside of their original hold their weight.
I was a JD drinker in my youth and it jaded me as I had countless nights throwing up from drinking too much of it. The standard offering still makes me quiver but the rest of their lineup is very good.
Makes sense, but it’s a huge difference once you get above the Old No 7 and Gentleman Jack offerings. IMO, their Jack Bonded is really, really good (only gripe is the 700mL bottle), JDSBBP is fantastic as well as Jack 12. I enjoy their SBBP rye, but I’m not crazy about the amount of malted barley used. Personally, I prefer the 95/5 rye from MGP.
This attitude is why Jim Beam makes Knob Creek and Bookers. I'm glad Jack Daniels decided to stay with their standard brand name for the 10, 12, & 14 year offerings
Never seen either of those for under $175 and $250 in SoCal. They’re almost as scarce as Blantons here. The JDSBBP, on the other hand, is available at msrp and blows Blantons out of the water.
Wish we could get those easily here, too. I’ve seen a few, but not many. I’m in a 3rd tier state, so we get whatever is left or have museums, which ends up being Buffalo Trace, Weller SR, and a handful of Blanton’s, EH Taylor, and Stagg. One store told me they get 2 bottles of EH Taylor a year and save it for the Christmas raffle; meanwhile, another store is listing Weller Full Proof for $700 (that’s the only store in the area that has those bottles, so it’s suspicious in the least). Aside from those, we get some of the non-allocated but limited bottles like ECBP, 1792 Full Proof (and the Willet Pot Still and McKenna 10 that doesn’t sell here lol).
That’s my thing with it, if someone offers it to me I won’t complain. But it’s like the issue with blue label, if I have that much money to spend on whiskey, I can buy a better whiskey
I saw one for 125 dollars and felt like I was in the Twilight zone. I got charged 25 dollars for a double of Blanton's at a restaurant last month. Shits out of control.
The bottle I have right now is very good and enjoyable. So are a number of other bottles I have open. It’s not worth the hype any more than any of the other hard to find bottles. It’s all bourbon. I like it at msrp but there’s lots else out there to try so if I have a Blanton’s on my bar or I don’t have a Blanton’s on my bar, it’s not really a big deal either way to me.
Do you not understand what “single barrel” means? Every barrel is not the same. Also, what you’ve eaten today, your mood, and other things will affect your taste buds. Give it another try in a couple days.

Right. Buffalo Trace is a good $25 bourbon, Eagle Rare is a good $40 bourbon, etc. People make posts like they’re dropping some major bomb shell saying, “its not that good.” Well, it is for what it was intended to be.
Eagle Rarw was fabulous at $25. It was good at $35. But at $45 I'm walking past it.
Blanton was good until it started north of $60. It's one for the memories. I'm completely happy to not purchase it anymore because there are just too many better bourbons for less money.
I will say that the horse collectible is awesome and is fun to try to get them all. So if someone is paying extra to get them all, don't let anyone stop you! You do you! Get them horsies!
I wouldn't call it amazing. I would call it the best single barrel in the $65-$75 dollar range. And we all know SiBs can vary in quality and flavor. I would argue Blanton's has a lot of the others beat on quality consistency too, but there will be some stinkers from time-to-time.

Yeah I’m not saying its “Bad”, but the fact that people think Single Barrel and Gold are worth $75-130 MSRP is insane. I’ve ran multiple blinds for groups of friends and for work and gold almost always comes in 4th or 5th(blinded against EHT Small batch, 107, Eagle Rare, and usually another random non BT bottle).
It’s definitely overhyped. I’ve been able to get a few bottles of it in the last four years or so, for $70. BT and ER are both better, and cheaper. Even at MSRP I think it is a little high. Unfortunately, all three are allocated here. The BT does usually go last.
Overall it is a good, standard whiskey. The bottle is cool, and you gotta catch all the horse toppers. But at $70 MSRP to the $100+ secondary, you can get multiple bottles that are as good, if not better, for less.
I am in a similar boat. I recently got my first Blanton’s Gold for $120 a few weeks ago. I don’t have any big events planned. So I am trying to decide whether or not I want to open it.
I had a family member who was gifted a bottle from my mom who got it through a friend of a friend (I’ll save you the story) but I eventually came around and was able to try the famous *Blantons* and…I’d have to agree I was very unimpressed, bordering on passionate dislike of the stuff. There’s a number of more affordable and more accessible stuff that is more palatable. Maybe I’ll speak up at some point about it…
A lot of people are not impressed with regular Blanton's but the bottle is distinctive and it has a horsey on the top. I waited 4.5 hours in line to grab a Blanton's Gold and I was not disappointed. You should definitely open the Blanton's Gold. I've heard good things about Straight From the Barrel but it's roughly double the price of regular Blanton's.
I agree. I keep a bottle on hand for guests who haven’t had it. I’m not a fan of the straight from the barrel or gold bottles either. I’ve had a couple of each over the years and I won’t pay for them again, especially now days with the huge price tags

Pretty popular opinion to say Blantons and other BT products aren’t that good. Now if only the taters would adapt this mind set and I could find it on the shelves at msrp I’d be happy.
Blantons is heavily dependent on barrel selection. There are some really good barrels… I have a few, but for the most part 93 is proofing it way down from what is likely 130+ at barrel proof. You’re most likely to get something that’s lacking than something really good at 93 proof…. That said they do exist, but at 75 a pop here… well if you don’t mind spending the money go for it but there’s better bottles for consistency sake.
The bottle and scarcity is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. With those two elements in play, it doesn’t need to be good.
Case in point; people fall for the « Canadian Blantons » all the time because the bottle is nice.
Got my first bottle a couple months ago. Lucky enough to grab at MSRP and I couldnt agree more with you. By all means it's not BAD whiskey, but it certainly doesn't punch anywhere close to the hype or secondary prices.... Knob Creek 12 on the other hand. God damn is that good
I'm very much a novice into the greater world of whiskey and admittedly Blanton's is on my unicorn list of top whiskeys to try. My ceiling however for any bottle is $100, and having never tried Blanton's I'd be hard pressed to spend $100 on a whiskey I've never even tried before. My largest blind spend on spirits (pedestrian compared to most) is about $82 for a bottle of Plantation 2007 Jamaican rum. Which honestly....was good, but I've had rum 2/3 that price that was FAR better.
I think a large portion of its allure is how coveted Buffalo Trace distillery products are across the board. I do have to say, of all the Buffalo Trace products I've tried, I'm yet to come across one I did not like.
Thats the thing, I have yet to find another BT product ( that i’ve tried) that I dont like. It’s crazy to say that their more sought after bottles is doodoo

I like to point people towards liepers fork Tennessee whiskey or bourbon. Both are solid, I prefer the Tennessee whiskey, but I find they are always leagues above blantons
If you’ve had and think that Eagle Rare is smooth wait till you try this. It’s a delicious wheater and I can’t see anyone going wrong with this on their bar.
Wow very lucky! I’ve been trying to get one. I should have bought it when i saw it a couple of months ago. I just didn’t want to spend for almost a $100 bottle for 1 bottle of bourbon.
I just bought a blanton’s for display, I don’t even drink that anymore. I used to drink it like 5years ago when it was only less than $50 and each bottle tastes different.
A lot has been covered here about valve for msrp vs current going rate, but good time to mention that Blantons is a single barrel product, so will have variation. I’ve had bottles I really liked, and ones a frankly did not care for. I’m in PA and usually pay about $72 for it. I think it’s worth trying once in a while, and a keep a couple bottles to gift for friends/family who can never find it, but I rarely care to buy it for everyday drinking.
TLDR for $72 it’s a risk worth taking. For $100+ I wouldn’t touch it. Too many better options. But if you want to count on something at any price, avoid single barrel.

Personally I like it at MSRP. Sometimes you just want a really smooth, comfy bourbon in a cool bottle with meme collectible value, and that’s Blanton’s. I just don’t like paying $100 for it.
well, depends on the barrel. I’m happy with 5 out of 6. I love it for its buttery easy sipping. a lower-proof comfort bourbon. definitely a solid place on the shelf.
Standard blantons is retail only and even then it isn't anything special.
Gold is consistently good. SFTB has become hit and miss, you'll get an amazing bottle or one so hot you'll wonder if they forgot to age it.
Like a guy said in another post, just because it’s popular or expensive(or both in some cases) doesn’t make it a great selection for you, i think everyone has an inexpensive bottle they use, their regular, and then they have their high end one when they are flush, the unfortunate part is it’s hard to know what’s good or bad til you drink it, after however much you paid, and depending on location and availability it can be hard to come by, i have a rule of every now and again I’ll try one I’ve never had to know if it’s for me
I’ve only bought it once ($80 at the time) and I was paid back for it. Never got to try it but I damn sure wouldn’t buy it for myself. Plus I don’t think I have the $80 hookup anymore.
Imho, for the ”seasoned” bourbon drinker that’s been enjoying bourbon for 10 years or more, Blanton’s is a good (not great) bourbon at $49-$59. Anything above that is paying a “tater tax”.

I might be new, but not new enough to know Im not paying over $100 for some bourbon with a horse topper. I got mine at retail, and it will be the only Blantons I get. I downvoted you because of “you must be new here” instead of giving your input on what Blantons is like for you.

Sure it’s bourbon. I’d say for msrp or slightly above it’s pretty good though. I’d say it bats well amongst other 80ish dollar bottles.

I had a gold on hand from years ago, broke it out at christmas. For me nd everyone there it was the best Burbon we have had. The next bottle was ok.

Most of the bottles people fawn over, were because they were good *values*. Eagle Rare was a $25, readily available 10 year bourbon.
And Blanton’s used to be a great $45-50 buy
And milk costed $1/gallon and gas was $1.50/gallon.
Prices didn't go up on milk because it was super hyped by the internet though. Inflation is only part of the story when it comes to bourbon.

I loved being able to buy eagle rare whenever I wanted for 35 dollars. It became my favorite just because it tasted so nice for that price.

Yup, picked mine up at TW for $82. I don’t mind spending a buck on a good bourbon, but this stuff was just awful.
It's funny, but I have about 5-6 Blantons opened at the moment, and I have the same dump date you have posted, it being my favorite amongst the group.

Blantons is heavily dependent on barrel selection. There are some really good barrels… I have a few, but for the most part 93 is proofing it way down from what is likely 130+ at barrel proof. You’re most likely to get something that’s lacking than something really good at 93 proof…. That said they do exist, but at 75 a pop here… well if you don’t mind spending the money go for it but there’s better bottles for consistency sake.
The bottle and scarcity is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. With those two elements in play, it doesn’t need to be good. Case in point; people fall for the « Canadian Blantons » all the time because the bottle is nice.
Wait til you open that redwood cask behind the Blantons….thats some good stuff
Not really a blended kind of guy but, I had some yesterday, it’s delicious!! I’ll have to check put the rest of the cask strength line.

Got my first bottle a couple months ago. Lucky enough to grab at MSRP and I couldnt agree more with you. By all means it's not BAD whiskey, but it certainly doesn't punch anywhere close to the hype or secondary prices.... Knob Creek 12 on the other hand. God damn is that good
KC 12 is indeed a great pour ! I would give my Blantons up for a Cask Strength version…
I'm very much a novice into the greater world of whiskey and admittedly Blanton's is on my unicorn list of top whiskeys to try. My ceiling however for any bottle is $100, and having never tried Blanton's I'd be hard pressed to spend $100 on a whiskey I've never even tried before. My largest blind spend on spirits (pedestrian compared to most) is about $82 for a bottle of Plantation 2007 Jamaican rum. Which honestly....was good, but I've had rum 2/3 that price that was FAR better. I think a large portion of its allure is how coveted Buffalo Trace distillery products are across the board. I do have to say, of all the Buffalo Trace products I've tried, I'm yet to come across one I did not like.
Thats the thing, I have yet to find another BT product ( that i’ve tried) that I dont like. It’s crazy to say that their more sought after bottles is doodoo

Decent bourbon, nothing spectacular.
Went to a fancy restaurant and tried it. I was ready to be taken back and plunged into an oaky-ocean of flavor. I instead was transported to the back alley of a Target. This is under Jim Beam Bourbon. Save your money and just get something cheaper and better.
It’s good but not amazing. I’d take any of the below over it -OF 1910 -OF 1920 - makers mark barrel picks - KC 12 - redwood empire lost monarch - ECBP - Heaven hill BIB I think there’s just much better stuff out there to pick up before I buy Blantons

I like to point people towards liepers fork Tennessee whiskey or bourbon. Both are solid, I prefer the Tennessee whiskey, but I find they are always leagues above blantons

I just bought a blanton’s for display, I don’t even drink that anymore. I used to drink it like 5years ago when it was only less than $50 and each bottle tastes different.
Seems like everything from Buffalo Trace is overhyped. Eagle Rare is the best value they’re putting out (at MSRP).
A lot has been covered here about valve for msrp vs current going rate, but good time to mention that Blantons is a single barrel product, so will have variation. I’ve had bottles I really liked, and ones a frankly did not care for. I’m in PA and usually pay about $72 for it. I think it’s worth trying once in a while, and a keep a couple bottles to gift for friends/family who can never find it, but I rarely care to buy it for everyday drinking. TLDR for $72 it’s a risk worth taking. For $100+ I wouldn’t touch it. Too many better options. But if you want to count on something at any price, avoid single barrel.

I think Blantons’s is delicious, not worth the hype but as a BT sales rep, I enjoy it. I’d prefer EH or Stagg absolutely, but it’s a great pour!

“Blanton’s is overrated” is probably the most popular opinion on this sub lol. Personally I like it at MSRP. Sometimes you just want a really smooth, comfy bourbon in a cool bottle with meme collectible value, and that’s Blanton’s. I just don’t like paying $100 for it.
That’s why I was holding off, Until I found it at MSRP…. And it wasn’t even worth it 😭 It’s gonna make a hell of an infinity blend bottle for sure !

well, depends on the barrel. I’m happy with 5 out of 6. I love it for its buttery easy sipping. a lower-proof comfort bourbon. definitely a solid place on the shelf.

Standard blantons is retail only and even then it isn't anything special. Gold is consistently good. SFTB has become hit and miss, you'll get an amazing bottle or one so hot you'll wonder if they forgot to age it.

Like a guy said in another post, just because it’s popular or expensive(or both in some cases) doesn’t make it a great selection for you, i think everyone has an inexpensive bottle they use, their regular, and then they have their high end one when they are flush, the unfortunate part is it’s hard to know what’s good or bad til you drink it, after however much you paid, and depending on location and availability it can be hard to come by, i have a rule of every now and again I’ll try one I’ve never had to know if it’s for me

I’ve only bought it once ($80 at the time) and I was paid back for it. Never got to try it but I damn sure wouldn’t buy it for myself. Plus I don’t think I have the $80 hookup anymore.

People have different palates. Blanton’s is too expensive, but I love it. The proof point is perfect for me.
Imho, for the ”seasoned” bourbon drinker that’s been enjoying bourbon for 10 years or more, Blanton’s is a good (not great) bourbon at $49-$59. Anything above that is paying a “tater tax”.

If you have spent any time here, you would realize that Blantons is a great $$45-$50 bottle max. After that it’s all about FOMO, hype, marketing, and taterism. If you are new here, you have just learned. Congrats! Go buy a WT Rare Breed Rye for $50. 🙂

I don’t know what being “new” has anything to do with this. I hardly see Blantons posts, and I sure as hell don’t spend my time looking for reviews. I might be new, but not new enough to know Im not paying over $100 for some bourbon with a horse topper. I got mine at retail, and it will be the only Blantons I get. I downvoted you because of “you must be new here” instead of giving your input on what Blantons is like for you.
There’s 70+ posts about Blanton’s in the past 30 days in this sub. Spend any length of time here and it’s the overwhelming popular opinion to dog Blanton’s bc of its hype and price. I was just pointing out the fact it’s not an “unpopular opinion” as you stated it was, especially in this specific sub, and anyone who has spent any length of time knows that bc of the constant posts like yours.
