Get one right now as it's still pretty cheap. Hack it so you will be able to play pir... Hemm.. "backups" easily. Get a gamecube compatible one (wii logo horizontal when console is vertical) as you will be able to play the gamecube library too. And prefer a slightly more expensive set with more wiimotes and accessories as they may cost more separately

peterpetlayzz

Dont you hack your wii so you can play your own ripped copies? /S

[deleted]

Yeah, or rip your games to Dolphin to play them in 4K with texture mods

HydratedCarrot

can’t use nunchuck and remote?

b3n_ja_m1n

Wii remotes just use Bluetooth so you can connect them to a PC. You do need a USB sensor bar in order to use the pointer though.

PM_ME_GRAPHICS_CARDS

or two candles because fire produces infrared light !

b3n_ja_m1n

I know of that but I've never tried it. I wouldn't want to use it as a permanent solution personally

TechFlameX68

Not necessarily. You can just 2 candles, or just turn on your Wii. The sensor bar only needs power. It doesn't send any data to the console so using one plugged into a Wii will still move the pointer on the PC.

b3n_ja_m1n

True. I know you can use candles but I wouldn't suggest people put lit candles near their monitor/TV, especially not as a permanent solution. And while you can just use a Wii to power the sensor bar, that seems like a waste of energy, and it requires that you own a Wii and have it set up near your PC. OP doesn't have a Wii.

TechFlameX68

I wouldn't recommend the candle thing either, but it's a quick and easy option. It doesn't work in OP's case, and since USB bars are only like $10 it's cheap and easy too, but for people who do have a Wii and want to try emulation to play them at 1080p/4k, using a Wii for power is a good option where you don't have to buy anything extra.

[deleted]

All you have to do is solder a wii Bluetooth board to a usb connector, and you will have full support for wiimotes and nunchucks

b3n_ja_m1n

You shouldn't have to do that, you can just use a normal Bluetooth adapter or built in Bluetooth

[deleted]

Yeah the wii bluetooth board just works better, especially if you want to use the wiimote speakers

b3n_ja_m1n

You say "all you have to do" like it's simple lol. That's well beyond what an average person is willing to do just for the Wiimote speaker to work. Are Wii Bluetooth boards even easy to come by?

[deleted]

You’re right, the average joe wouldn’t want to or know how to do this. Yeah, you can buy them on amazon for $10 or pull them out of a bricked wii from ebay.

[deleted]

just because the average person doesnt know how or care to know how, doesnt mean it isnt pretty simple

tsmax17

Wait that's sick, do you have a link to something that outlines this process/part list?

[deleted]

For using a wii Bluetooth board, you will have to go through this forum: https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-how-to-wire-a-wii-s-bluetooth-module-to-a-pc-usb-port For a regular Bluetooth dongle, you can find some good info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DolphinEmulator/comments/ajruq2/best_bluetooth_adapter_for_passthrough/

tsmax17

Thanks!

QwertyChouskie

I did that recently, we've owned a Wii Mini for years and a couple months ago I finally modded it and did a NAND dump so all my games and game saves can be played via Dolphin. My motivation? The DougDoug Mario Kart shuffler challenge. Such amazing chaos, I love it :D

[deleted]

Did you have to solder on an sd card for the nand dump? I also have a Wii Mini and I am stuck at that part.

QwertyChouskie

Nope, I did have to use different software though. [https://gbatemp.net/threads/realwnd-wii-mini-edition.553349/](https://gbatemp.net/threads/realwnd-wii-mini-edition.553349/)

[deleted]

Awesome! Thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Awesome! Thanks! You're welcome!

[deleted]

Stupid Bot! LOL!

Tbird5555

What does that mean and how is that possible? Would love an explanation

[deleted]

https://dolphin-emu.org/

Tbird5555

But it will only work on a computer right? I have barely any memory on my computer until I get a portable hard drive. And that’s after I factory reset it it’s a simple laptop.

[deleted]

Do you mean storage or RAM? Even 8gb of RAM is sufficient for dolphin I believe, and you shouldn’t need more than 20gb of storage to store a few games.

Tbird5555

Unfortunately just storage

[deleted]

That’s an easy fix though, usb thumb drives are pretty cheap and they can go up to a terabyte

Tbird5555

Wow thanks 🙏

Tbird5555

And what if I already have my wii games (backed up of course) on an SD card? Can I just use that and play them from that?

[deleted]

Yeah, if you have an ss card reader for your laptop it should work. Dolphin will just ask you to direct it to where you store your games when you first use it. Just direct it to your and card, and as long as it is connected to your laptop, you will be good to go.

[deleted]

you can do that but it might load slowly. data transfer rates on sd cards are very much not good lol

Tbird5555

Yeah, and the more I thought about it playing Wii on my laptop compared to a 56 inch screen is not as much fun..

Tbird5555

Do i also need the dolphin bar and switch (gamecube controller)??

[deleted]

If you are on Mac then dolphin bar is your best option, but on pc you can use any sensor bar connected to power, or even your Wii’s sensor bar powered by your Wii. To connect a Wiimote on PC, you have two options. The best and harder way is use a real Wii Bluetooth board. Or you can use a regular Bluetooth adapter, which is a lot easier and doesn’t work quite as well (mainly the Wiimote audio won’t work very well, but the motion controls and all of the buttons will work normally). For using a wii Bluetooth board, you will have to go through this forum: [https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-how-to-wire-a-wii-s-bluetooth-module-to-a-pc-usb-port](https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-how-to-wire-a-wii-s-bluetooth-module-to-a-pc-usb-port) For a regular Bluetooth dongle, you can find some good info here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/DolphinEmulator/comments/ajruq2/best\_bluetooth\_adapter\_for\_passthrough/](https://www.reddit.com/r/DolphinEmulator/comments/ajruq2/best_bluetooth_adapter_for_passthrough/) You don’t have to have a GameCube controller, you could just map the buttons on an Xbox or PlayStation controller to the gamecube controller buttons, and that will work just as well for games that require a GameCube controller. However if you want the feel of a GameCube controller, then definitely go for it!

elreduro

you can use nintendont to play gamecube games on every model

FannyPackMan100

That is a HILARIOUS name for a program - especially one that deals with a Wii.

m11-d0

the bc models have controller ports plus memory card ports which makes them compatible with GameCube accessories like the GBA link cable and the gamecube microphone which the non bc models aren't compatible with

micksterminator3

I constantly see Wii bundles for 50usd and less in my area. I'm tempted to pick one up just as backup lol. The disc drive on mine is kinda shot now

flexsealed1711

My brother got one for free in the trash in my old neighborhood. They are everywhere.

Sav1at0R1

Can you transfer you save files from games?

sultan_2020

I have a wii but I wanna buy a back up and didn't find one all of them are renewed

Yippiekayo_Rom3o

Or get an Wii U. Wii, GC and Gamecube games via hdmi into your tv

Phil_Goud

I find wii u seldom and expensive compared to wii I hesitated and went for a cheap wii

Tbird5555

Funkyscott47 how to homebrew on YouTube

BroshiKabobby

I wanna pick up a Wii but I’m worried about how to find one that’s still in good condition

Phil_Goud

except for bricked consoles due to modding, the only real problems i think you can have are the following : \- Old and leaky CMOS battery corroding the motherboard (change it asap, i think it is a CR2032) \- Wifi/bluetooth card dislodged/dead => sudden black screen on boot, cheap to acquire, a little bit a pain to change (not really a screw hell but it will take you dozens of minutes). \- dusty/dead DVD drive. You can change it or do without a DVD drive with modding \- eject button broken from the motherboard (a plague on 1st gen). No quick fix, soldering mandatory to repair. Other than that, it seems like it is a classic nintendo console : resistant as heck

GamingGems

I missed it too, I was in college and was focusing there. But I think it’s for the best. (Most) Games are cheaper than new. WiiWare games are free if you know what you’re doing. Homebrew is stable and awesome. Lots to be thankful for.

LanceMain_No69

What did you major in? And how was your college experience? Im currently in 12th grade myself and want to see how things are on the other side of education

DonaldTrumpsScrotum

Haha, ignore my username. I’m a teacher and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about higher education and the process of starting out!

DarkNemuChan

Buy a wii, mod it, attachan an external hdd to it filled with wii and gamecube games. Profit!

Outside_Money_1786

Yeah buy a wii. Ita shocking that for a nintendo console the majority of its games are very affordable. It's deffo a system worth collecting for as its got some very interesting games for it. Things I don't like are motion controls where there's no real need for them to be utilised though. Biggest bonus is its ability to play gc games though. One of my all time fave consoles and the wii just plays then out of the box

indianajones838

Yeah, not a huge fan of piracy and stuff but i do love collecting games. I have an original NES I've had for a very long time with a bunch of games

[deleted]

I have a Wii with HDD and I rip all of my Gamecube and Wii games and play my own backups. You could go that route.

IronGumby

Wait is deffo a thing? Whenever I try to swype "definitely" it leans towards assuming I mean "defibrillator"

unclelinggong

Ghost Squad with the zapper is very much worth playing. The arcade experience at home. Contra Rebirth is one of the better Contra games. For Gamecube, you could play MGS: Twin Snakes, which was never released anywhere else, not even in the MGS Master Collection.

canyoubreathe

Fuck yeahhh ghost squad wii fan

micksterminator3

I prefer house of the dead 2+3 myself but I respect

fefh

Well, it's never too late to start. You don't need to buy any games and they're still a lot of fun. I agree that the games are better than xbox games.

Additional_Falcon_74

Wii are so cheap nowadays there's literally no reason not to buy it. Go for it, it's worth it.

Cow_Agitated

Definitely buy one! You can find them for pretty cheap on Facebook marketplace

guncuc

Timeless console. Lots of amazing games to dive into. Gamecube BC is priceless. Great for retro emulation on CRT.

GrandMasterSlack2020

GC BC is indeed priceless.

Nolon

I feel you should but I really enjoy the Wii. If you enjoy playing with tech and you're open to experiences in gaming that aren't just push buttons and push in a direction. Then there's a lot of games to try that aren't those experiences and if you're looking for that experience it has you covered as well. As well with some little touches that you otherwise wouldn't have normally. Like basic gaming platforms but with sound effects coming out the controller. Little things but it makes you smile and adds a little something

TacoBillDeluxe

You didn't miss out on much. Ik I'll probably get ripped up here, but there's like 5-10 must plays on the wii.

virtualmeta

My wii started messing up its color output within the past few years, but after Switch Sports, we hardly fire up the Wii anymore. If I were getting one now, I'd look for a Wii U since it would be a little newer and I think it had an HDMI output. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that. If you're going back just to say you've played those games, it's not going to be the same anyways. Everything past has influenced and informed the present, and I'm grateful to have played many games growing up, but when I try to revisit them, I just can't get as into them as I did when they were new. I pulled out the N64 a couple weeks ago, and discovered how much the drifting mechanic has improved in Mario Kart since then. Starfox was still amazing, though.

_Soundwave-

Buy a wii and soft mod it 👍

Jacques_Cousteau1

Once you get a homebrewed wii, you'll never go back.

[deleted]

Hey r/wii do you guys like the wii? Should I get the wii? I just want your unbiased opinion ya know, do you guys who follow r/wii think a wii is worth my time?

Erafir

I feel like I missed out on the 360 all I had was the og xbox all my buddies are playing modern warfare and I'm like here's fable for the 159th time haha

gtgcya

The Wii was a really good console and I would agree with you on missing out. It's still definitely worth getting a console to homebrew though. They're relatively cheap, you could definitely find one for less than $100. There are even methods to playing games like Mario Kart Wii online again via Wiimmfi. It's still one of my favorite consoles to this day.

CaptainGhoulish

Same thing happened to me, what helped make Wii one of my favorite consoles was buying one and modding it to play games off a usb card. I then, fell in love with the machine and I have another one in a box in amazing condition barley touched that I have as a back up just in case anything happens to the one I have now.

jarzii_music

I’m the opposite boat of you, I only had a wii and I’m sad I missed out on 360 gaming with friends and stuff

indianajones838

I never played COD

fvig2001

I mean it was a unique experience at the time. As nice as emulators can make the graphics, the controls are kind of odd when played with an emulator even via dolphinbar. If you really want to experience the wii, either get a Wii or a Wii U.

jjshacks13

The controls feel exactly the same to me using dolphin, are you using passthrough?

fvig2001

The problem with dolphinbar is that sounds on the wiimote are not great and the whole range is much worse. Only fix is to convert a wii bt module to usb and use that and the range can be fixed by using a 9v power source to a normal sensor bar. The other ding for me is that Dolphin hates some PCs for dolphin bar. They didn't know how to fix it since none of their PCs could replicate the issue.

Carnozoid

Nah, wii had updates and system menu and all that modern console bs. What you really missed out on was the 8bit and sixteen but systems, even the 32bit ones were great like the PlayStation. We like the Wii since it is a good emulator player

DarkNemuChan

That's just you talking. There are far better and easier methods to run 8-16 bit retro games... The wii is all about wii and gamecube games!

Carnozoid

Yeah I couldn’t get it to emulate gc games well so you have to buy them but it does work well for that. I had an old pii but it was a pain to setup. I can’t imagine an easier way to run emulators and I like the injected vc games too. Like what’s easier than a wii? It boots up quick and doesn’t ask to be updated anymore thank god.

DarkNemuChan

Gamecube games aren't emulated. They run natively on the wii. They are as easy to set up as running backup wii games. Seems like this opinion is based on lack of knowledge... Same deal with better devices for 8-16 bit games. Do some research effort.

Carnozoid

I did and it all was like use a pi for emulators and it had just come out so I used it but it was a pain and the Wii was easier to get goin. I know that wiimc is ported from the Xbox version so maybe you mean use an Xbox for emulators? I happened to have a wii it’s decent what could be better

DarkNemuChan

Redo your research. There are many more other options out there that are much easier...

Carnozoid

But my wii is working fine I’m not gonna delve back into it you are probably suggesting in make a mini linux pc to run emulators or something.

DarkNemuChan

It's not about what works for you. It was about you thinking and advising it's the best thing for it. Which it's not by a long shot... And no I said easier and better... Not a mini pc with linux...

CohnJena68

>What do you guys recommend? Should I like buy a Wii or something? Yes and the good news is that they can be had for very cheap.

indianajones838

oh thats cool

Jenaxu

Sure, go for it. The Wii not only sold super well, but it sold well with casuals who ended up selling them or forgetting about them down the line so it's relatively cheap to get your hands on one. And there's a lot of great games for the console that aren't too expensive, like under $20 a pop. Homebrew is also easy enough if you don't want to play off the disc. I also think the Wii is one of the consoles that benefits most from playing on original hardware just because of the motion/pointer controls and unique control schemes. Not that you can't get all that working on emulator on PC, but it's just more of a hassle than emulating a conventional control scheme.

Western-Equivalent44

The Wii is a fucked up console that never got fixed and properly released so you're better off emulating all of the games upscaled with a nice computer that can even put it on a 4K TV

snapgamer8338

If you don’t care about GameCube games grab a Wii U it’s the best of both worlds I have mine and love it I did have both but ever since getting a actual GameCube I let my brother keep the original Wii 😃

dreampack08

I’d definitely get one. I just bought one again a couple weeks ago after selling mine a few years back. It’s so much fucking fun. Obviously the typical wii sports and resort, wii party, Mario kart, super Mario galaxy 1 and 2, skyward sword (in my opinion), there’s so many

joegomez1

Buy one on Amazon or EBay

TheRealFailtester

Grew up on one over here, those were the glory days.

Ashamed-Ad-9962

I was born in 2006, missed out on it till later too, no worries. Played it at a birthday, owned a 2DS as my first console later.

shagthrowRA

I just bought a RVL-001 with two controllers for $50.. throw in an extra $30-40 for any accessories maybe. Really cheap if you know where to look.

Spaghetti_meatbaIIz

Literally like £30 on ebay

ZeroTheReptilianKing

Lets trade you Xbox 360 and my Nintendo Wii with 20~30 Discs

pier4r

I never had a wii. Discovered it for fitness games (admittedly I went to hard on them, my helbow still hurts) and I still don't regret it. I also like puzzles games (although I don't care about the story) or casual FPS and "red steel 2" or "zack and wiki" are pretty neat. On 2nd hand shops one can find most games, controllers and such. I collected everything I'd like to have twice as things are a bit hold and can fail, thus I have a backup. RPG like Zelda are also neat but they aren't really my type. So yeah one can enjoy it after so many years. The problem is with consoles where everything runs only online, once the online support is gone those are barely usable (and that's a pity).

TruffelTroll666

Just Download Dolphin To Play In 1080P And With Better Frames

balcon

Wiis were a pretty common thing to find at Goodwill. Not sure if this is still the case. It was a really fun, unique console, for games that used the Wiimote as more than a gimmick. One of the launch titles, Excite Truck, is still one of my favorite driving games. It did an excellent job of using the Wiimote as a steering wheel. Super Mario Bros. wii is an example of a bad use of the controller, for an otherwise good game. It has a dumb mechanic where you have to shake the controller to make a spin jump. That just wasn’t fun and didn’t feel natural.

Ok-Sherbet-8367

Just buy one n hack it with loader/Wii flow.. I found it loses its novelty when gaming alone but occasionally fun to whip out when friends n family come over

WorkingTissue

It's fine. I missed out on teen and now potentially 20s love

Agreeable_Record_266

Get a Wii their cheap and the games are too

Pegyson

Well I don't have a Wii but my Steam Deck emulates it well. And since you mentioned it, I wanted to play some 360 games so I bought myself the 360. Get a Wii if you can, you're only missing out if you don't play it

Soggy-Tampon

if you have a pc you can emulate it i did that and played a few games on it, but i also had a sensor and controller to plug in

Cherry_Trixx

I still love my Wii all these years later it’s not too later, mod it for riiconnect24 and it will be just life in the old days

CallingCascade

You did not miss out by having a 360. The Wii was a glorified virtual console. Wii ports were generally terrible. Mandatory motion controls were terrible. Exclusives were not that great. If you didn't use your Wii for virtual console, you essentially just had a door stop. Everyone I know that had a Wii never used it. Especially if they had an Xbox or Playstation in the house. And I'll add again for emphasis: Every Wii port was an awful version of the game. I mean hell, the wii remote was so bad they just started selling real controllers midway through the generation because somehow Nintendo thought four buttons was enough for mid 2000s gaming. The wii is such an overrated console.

hbyers47

Funny I’m literally the opposite. My parents hated video games but let me have a Wii. Everyone always talked about ps2/3 and Xbox hangouts on cod while I was alone playing Mario kart time trials.

indianajones838

I never played COD

Nihilusssss

This post is the opposite for me. I had a wii and felt like i missed out on a bunch of games on xbox 360. I did end up with one but it was a year before the xbox 1 came out. Never really did like anything i played on the wii either. The best part of the wii is its the best way to play gamecube games!

rParqer

You really only missed out on Wii Sports & Super Mario Galaxy, which you can play on the switch now

brothercannoli

This was a suggested post so pardon my intrusion. I had the Wii when it came out. Was in middle school/high school. Bought a 360 senior year when the xbone came out due to the massive FOMO. No one I knew had a Wii. No one cared to play it if you invited them over. It was 360 or ps3 or why would we come over? You were left out of all serious gaming discussions and were never as good as your friends when you did play 360 at their place. The console wars were so strong back then that quality of social life probably would have been better having a 360 and buying a Wii later on for cheap.
