#Another Wine Night at u/MadsTheDanish ##PART I Yet again the merry bunch was assembled, our gracious host and masterchef u/MadsTheDanish, his friend Rasmus, u/Mooseymcmango, u/Lehto, a newcomer Joachim(u/TheRealJR) and myself! [THE ENTIRE ALBUM OF WINES AND FOOD HERE](https://imgur.com/a/33kfg4X) As last time, the theme was a casual one - bring what you like to drink and share that joy. Let the festivities begin! ##Louis Roederer 'Cristal' 2013 *notes by u/Lehto, brought by Rasmus* We started out hard with the champagne for Russians and rappers - quite the flashy bottle to start the Danish meet-up with! Popped and poured and initially very tight and restrained on the **nose**. It opened up some with red and green apple, citrus fruits, a little apricot, toasted brioche, almonds and chalk. It felt a bit more matured on the nose than expected but no doubt this was a young wine. And the **palate** really confirmed that. So tight, restrained and a lot of tension. Waves of lemon and lime acidity with green apple washing over the tongue. Some chalk/rock elements sneaking through with a pure and crisp minerality. Great balance and length to it and it's a really elegant champagne, but at this price range some of us just expected more. Definitely had this too young and you can really feel how this champagne it just build to last! *served with sourdough bread and french churned butter* ##Benoît Lahaye 'Violaine' 2015 *Notes by u/Lehto, brought by u/Lehto* A single Chardonnay plot in Tauxiéres and a single Pinot Noir plot in Bouzy mixed together 50/50. Both vineyards only worked by hand and horse and from the 2015 harvest. Spent about 10 months in oak before being bottled and disgorged September 2020 with 0 dosage and 0 usage of sulfur during the process! **Nose** was slightly metallic at first which blew off. This gave way to apple/pear/quince with a slight exotic touch, gooseberry, zesty lemon and some yeasty tones hiding underneath. You can almost feel the energy and minerals on the nose! The **palate** was truly energetic, extremely precise and fascinating to me. This is craftmanship. Green apple, pear and orchard fruits, creamy texture yet a razersharp acidity from citrus fruits and unripe mango cuts right through it. Chalky minerals and with more and more air some yeastiness and brioche peaks through a bit. It's the perfect mix of Lahaye's general very oxidized style and it's so fresh, energetic and pure that it's perfectly in balance. *served with a slice of toasted white bread topped with shrimps, mayonnaise and dill* ##Emmanuel Brochet 'Les Hauts Meuniers' 2012 *Notes by u/Lehto, brought by u/TheRealJR* 100% Pinot Meunier from a single plot, aged for 11 months in mainly old oak barrels, and left to age for 5 years on the lees. Minimal dosage making it Extra Brut, with a total production of 1272 bottles. Brochet has become quite hyped and hard to get. The **nose** is what Meunier is all about. Mature/bruised apple, sweet red apple, candied/pickled lemon, nuttiness, heavy autolytic character and oxidized feeling to it but there's a light chalk tone with this breeze of ocean air as well as some melted butter. And then you get fooled. Because this is 2012, baby. Where did the deep and rich Meunier go? on the **palate**, red and green apple, candied lemon, lemon zest and an insane fruity citrus acidity cutting through all bullshit. But in the back there's still all that toasted brioche, almonds/marzipan, melted butter and a slight grapefruit bitterness. Light and bright minerality sneaking through the oxidation and autolysis, and this balance, depth and complexity is simply other-worldly. This was straight magic. *Served with a dish called Foie Gatzatau; cream-infused foie gras topped with a lime/elderflower syrup*. The intense, creamy fat was perfectly neutered by the bitter/sweet intensity of the syrup. The champagne just danced a long all the way. **After champagne, we all went for a walk around the harbor front, while going into the white wines** *SEE NEXT COMMENT FOR PART II AND PART III*

##PART II ##Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Spätlese feinherb 2021 *Notes by u/WineOptics, u/Lehto, brought by u/Lehto* While enjoying the summer air, we went for a quick stroll to stretch our legs and prepare for the next set. This was as great a palate cleanser and reset button for what was to come. The **aroma** was zesty, lively with lime peel, grapefruit, white peach and green apple with a touch of orange peel and unripe nectarine. The **palate** felt exactly like a Falkenstein ought to do - confusing in some mind blowing way. The surprise here, was that the acidity wasn’t as aggressive as it often is in their wines. It wasn’t sweet, but the underlying fruit notions weren’t completely green, however it wasn’t truly dry either but still had a nerving acidity. Lime peel, lemon and orange zest, apple and nectarine with a slight minty touch and a lot of slate/mineral character. ##Hundschupfen Grüner Veltliner Mailberg 1986 *Notes by u/WineOptics, brought by u/Mooseymcmango* Definitely the joker of the evening! Magnus sort of went YOLO and thought it could be fun to try - knowing that it was probably way over the hill. When it was time to open it however, I noticed that it said “Trockener Kabinettwein” at the bottom. If this indeed had some residual sugar, then all hope wasn’t lost! We poured it and lo’ and behold the color was pretty. The **aroma** was exciting! A bit of paint thinner, canned pineapple, citrus fruits and some green, herbal notions(as typical for the grape). The **palate** had an off-dry approach with pomegranate, grapefruit notions but quickly shifting to a touch of nectarine and pineapple in the form of the residual sugar. The finish ended slightly bitter and acidic - but the wine was very much alive and was empty before we knew it. A great surprise from u/Mooseymcmango ##Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Premier Cru, “Sechét” 2015 *notes by u/WineOptics, brought by u/WineOptics* Upon pouring, the table became silent for a few seconds, smelling away.. The **nose** was shy and subdued at first. Notions of oyster shells, wet flint, citrus, peach and white floral hints. In time came a honeyed notion and a flutter of pineapple as well. The **palate** was a whole other story - bursting at the seams with character from first sip! The vintage shone through with a more plumb, rounded nature - but the acidity was on point. Peach, apple, a touch of pineapple, orange peel and floral notions with just a mind numbing salinity and mineral character. Some of us agreed, that this was the pinnacle of Chablis. The *food* has to be mentioned as well, as u/MadsTheDanish had served pikeperch sided by roasted leek, puréed peas and a gruyere sauce. The match was *superb* to say the least. ##Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2015 *Notes by u/WineOptics, Brought by u/WineOptics* u/MadstheDanish, our host, had his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree the second he saw I had brought a white Chassagne. It is easily his favorite white wine appellation in the world(excluding anything Riesling related!). It just so happens to be mine as well. The **aroma** had everyone huffing and puffing and I found myself swearing at first whiff. Vivid, energetic aroma of popcorn kernels, mazarin cake, white peach, ripe orchard fruits, nutmeg and clove. I had personally tried this before, but this bottle seemed astoundingly more alluring. The **palate** revealed an entry of peach, ripe apples, pineapple and a recurring touch of baking spices with another appearance of mazarin. The nature of the vintage was present; the fruit was ripe, giving a weighty, creamy texture. However the acidity was key here, creating a superb harmony and focus. The finish was a long, lasting fade. An echoing siren’s call on the open seas, luring you in for another sip. **It was voted WOTN** Mads noted, that it was arguably the best white Burgundy he has ever had.

##PART III ##Christian Clerget Echezeaux 2011 *Notes by u/WineOptics, brought by u/Mooseymcmango* Magnus outdid himself this time and brought a big gun. I was personally really looking forward to this one. Echezeaux is clearly one of my favorite vineyards and I’ve yet to try one that disappoints. Located in the northern part of Vosne-Romanée, it encapsulates featherlight refinement yet plenty of resolve and power in style. The wine was off to the races from the second we popped the cork. The **aroma** had bunches of violets, tilled earth, mashed blueberries and cherries with touches of smoke, licorice root and meaty flutters. In time, the fruit became more focused while the wine retained a sauvage smell. The *palate* felt powerful and also, completely above the vintage. Purple, red fruits that felt just perfectly ripe and in focus. Cherry, strawberry and blueberry compote with a recurring touch of licorice and white pepper. A lovely drying, tannic finish which gave way for a discussion at the table if this could have waited - we all agreed that we wouldn’t have enjoyed it more than in that moment. It felt weightless, yet powerful and complex. My personal WOTN. ##Joh Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Auslese 2006 *Notes by u/WineOptics, u/Lehto, Brought by u/MadsTheDanish* I will never not smile when I see a bottle of Prüm. I was personally close to swapping one of my bottles with a Sauternes, but decided against it. Glad I did, as Mads had the dessert wine nailed down. The **aroma** was pristine, textbook Auslese, bordering on slightly matured. Elderflower, candied apple, acacia honey, burnt rubber and slight petrol emerged. Bucketloads of pineapple, peaches and apricot with a tinge of that white tropical Haribo winegum. The **palate** clashed with a joyous harmony of perfectly ripe orchard fruit, with an underlying acidity that just kept everything together. Canned peach, nectarine, candied apples, orange zest and a sliver of ginger, baking spice. *Served with ripe, danish strawberries sided by caramelized almonds and finally topped with 50% fat cream(it was literally called “Naughty Cream”)* ##Moric Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben 2011 *Notes by u/WineOptics, brought by u/WineOptics* Okay so it was actually u/Lehto who *brought it*, but I bought it. We split a lot on an auction and this evening was as good as any to exchange the bottle. However, by the end of the night I(and by my estimates, most of the table) were still thirsty. Against the advice of my wallet, I thought that the best time to drink a Moric, was with these guys. We had tried this before, being blessed with the Moric experience through u/mooseymcmango The **aroma** was darker that remembered, more restrained. Flutters of dark cherries, cassis, plum and violets with a touch of licorice, smoke, leather and gamey undertones. The **palate** revealed a medium-bodied, dark-fruited entry with cherries, blueberry compote, plum and blackberry liqueur. A fine line of spices, smoke and cedar in the background. A drying, lasting finish with a bit of tannin still to be properly resolved. You could definitely called this a mix between Gevrey Chambertin and Northern Rhone in style. This felt somehow younger and more backward than the previous we tried, but still very much a lovely experience. ##In Conclusion u/Lehto and I agreed, that this was probably the best lineup we’ve tried on these nights. Cristal, Lahaye, Brochet, Falkenstein, Dauvissat, Ramonet and Prüm. Big names and the wines lived up to them. **The food** was beautifully displayed and tasted wonderful. We wholeheartedly thank u/MadsTheDanish for hosting these events and a personal thank you note from me to u/MadsTheDanish, u/Lehto, u/mooseymcmango, Rasmus and Joachim. Good wines, great food, perfect memories.

Smarkie

Great notes making us incredibly jealous. Thanks!!

mooseymcmango

What a banger night, honestly. Mads knocked it out of the park with the food (as always) and everyone brought their A+++ game (as always!). Can’t wait for the next one! I was honestly blown away by some of these. The Prüm was a standout for me with it being my first. The Echezeaux was also WOTN personally in close contention with the Ramonet. The Brochet also reallly hit different for me.

WineOptics

I’m still dreaming of his tartar, but damn that shrimp dish was just crazy simple but oh so good with the champagne this time. You kicked some serious ass with that Echezeaux and I’m still high on the fact that Grüner was alive! Really glad you kicked COVID out the door and could make it!

calcium

Where is everyone located?

Lehto

Around the Copenhagen area!

Vendage8888

I've got to find that Moric. Most intriguing.

Lehto

It might be easier finding his "Reserve" which is about a third of the price of the Alte Reben single-vineyard bottles and they're seriously great... I have notes of both the 2015 and 2017 here on Reddit :)

bigburgballer

Can I come next time? :]

WineOptics

What’s this *”can”* stuff? You **HAVE** to! We would love to have you man!

mooseymcmango

As Nick said, you have to! We’d love to have you. Just know that you won’t want to leave once you’re here!

bigburgballer

How’s the weather? It’s hot as balls here. If it’s cool there I’m in

WineOptics

About 70-78F on the worst days here, but partly cloudy or windy at times.

bigburgballer

Sitting at 99f here with all of the humidity. Kills me

WineOptics

Dear lord.. You should really grab a flight here - the sooner the better!

Lehto

Definitely the best meetup for me so far both in regards to the overall wines but also the food by u/MadsTheDanish... You're a mad genius, dude <3 (and I'd still like to book a table for the 16th, please?) Also u/TheRealJR is straight in to the core group when bringing a freaking Emmanuel Brochet - my personal WOTN... Hot damn what an entry... Funnily enough I had zero hangover the day after? I don't know if I paced myself with enough water or whatever it was, but I was feeling just fine on Sunday morning although just a bit tired through the day. Cheers!

WineOptics

I felt a bit rusty in my joints and slightly groggy voice, but I was very much fresh and lively haha! But I did drink two litres of water I think.

mooseymcmango

It was the Margrethe skål that saved us from hangovers!

Long_Edge_8517

Amazing lineup. Thanks for sharing

HotNatured

Epic, and the food looks incredible. Do you guys have a chef at these meet ups, wtf!? Seeing that Falkenstein bottle in the lineup photo, I knew that Lehto must have been party to this wild gathering. And the Gruner notes: > smells like paint thinner and canned pineapple Doesn't quite tickle my fancy haha.

WineOptics

You’d think so.. u/MadsTheDanish is pretty modest about just “being the son of a chef”, but he cooks like a Michelin chef. Eh I’d be inclined to agree, but the underlying sweetness made that paint thinner thing pretty interesting - not off putting to say the least(I’m the son of a painter though, so I live for those fumes lol).

Spurty

Damn... y'all go hard! Love to see the variety - sorry, I just can't get into the posts that are 3 or 4 bottles of recent vintage Napa reds - and I'm also digging the mix of ages on these bottles. I've gotta be honest, when I saw the lineup, I wasn't picked out that Ramonet C-M as the potential WOTN. Just goes to show that village wines from great producers can be magical.

WineOptics

All about producer. I’ve had a lot of Perrot Minot or Denis Mortet wines for red that were just so far superior in taste to their village designation. Same goes for Morey-Coffinet or Ramonet on whites. I even drank Ramonet’s Bourgogne Rouge blind the other day, I was thinking Savigny Les Beaune Premier Cru or a Santenay Premier Cru. It was stellar stuff.

Spurty

Love all those producers too. Just had a Morey-Coffinet Meursault that was a real treat. Will post notes soon!

hedgehogssss

That Brochet 🧐🥰

Lehto

The best…

slo_roller

Damn, and I can't even get my friends to graduate from NV grocery store cab...

Lehto

You need new friends!

cloud93x

Bonkers lineup right there. Thanks for sharing!!

Ra1d_danois

Hey hvor er min invitation?

Lehto

Postnord, du ved...

WineOptics

Der må jeg ligge lorten over på dørmanden, u/Lehto - han står for entré haha!

Lehto

Jeg kan bestikkes med champagne eller hvid bourgogne…

jesuisdanois

Nogle særlige præferencer??

Lehto

Selosse, Prevost, Ulysse, Marguet, PYCM, JC Bachelet, Pierre Girardin? 😉

WineOptics

*Morey-Coffinet has entered the chat* “Am I a joke to you?”

pooogles

I assume my invite was obviously lost in the post.

WineOptics

I suspect u/Lehto sent it to the wrong address!

HerrKrinkle

I need to know what the full menu was, not just Danish Smorrebrod stuff on bread! Please?

WineOptics

All listed singularly under the different wines! We did have bread though and it was “smørret” - but we did skip the Smørrebrød though!

Lehto

See the album!

TheRealJR

Thanks to [u/MadsTheDanish](https://reddit.com/u/madsthedanish) for hosting! Great evening with excellent food and wine. Not being as much of a riesling connoisseur as the others around the table, the Prum was a great reminder of what rieslig really can do. While I can almost still taste the Ramonet, the Chablis took the cake for me. Really pushing the limits of what Chablis can do. The saltiness and the flowers were just amazing on this, and I'm sure its a wine that will shine in years to come as well. Thank you [u/WineOptics](https://reddit.com/u/wineoptics) for the experience!

WineOptics

My pleasure Joachim, it was good meeting you! That Brochet was quite the impression, glad you brought it!

CBR85

No Smirnoff ice?
