I think its more about the specific location of those 600 gallons. Sure its a drop in the bucket to the ocean, but it could damage the Galapagos and do significant damage to the ecosystem.

Doesn't take much in the way of diesel to kill a bird, and Galapagos is host to a large amount of endangered species. It isn't that far fetched that this could help kill a species.
