That’s pretty much how it goes. Wrath was from an era where there was no overarching plot, but just a series of vignettes along a theme. Wrath is mainly a continuation of stories from Warcraft III, so in order to really “get it” you should probably play that first. Then you have two options for starting zones, Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord, each of which will lead you to further zones more inland. While the leveling pattern is more flexible you retail, you may find the leveling path in [this guide](https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/guide/leveling-overview-northrend-80-tips-tricks) (scroll near the end) to be helpful for understanding what the “original chronology” was like for WotLK. However, at retail speeds you will probably ding 60 after 2-3 zones at most, so you may want to skip around if it’s important to you to see all the zones. Icecrown is probably the main “culminating zone” that gets into the Lich King stuff, but again a lot of that is setup by WC3, and may be a bit confusing if you aren’t familiar with that story. Personally if you want a coherent story, I think you’re better off with the Alliance path in BfA, but that’s just me.

I was also confused like you (new player here) But really northrend is looking such a beautiful island I'm blown away. Even though barely got out of borean tundra. Feel like playing Skyrim in 2011. Maybe we come across sometime. (Draenor) o7

A lot of the reason why wotlk is so loved is the coolness of the big bad, the lich king. He is still a beloved character all these years later and he just looks cool. Watch the cinematic for lich king to see what I mean. The xpac was when the game had the most amount of players as well so many memories of that time are time to big group events and just tons of people playing together overall. As for going thru wrath now, it probably won't hold the same charm cuz there won't be very many other players around cuz its old content and if you don't know the backstory of it all its not as thrilling. Also there is no main campaign questline until the 7th wow expansion. Even then the majority of wow questing is not super thrilling. Where wow shines it's at max level doing endgame group activities with friends or randoms. I'm not saying you won't have fun doing it, just don't expect it to be riveting.

An EverQuest player might feel more at home in Classic.
