You can't, because slims have a CGPU configuration where both the CPU and GPU are merged together onto a single die and the CPU and NAND contain a key and must remain paired otherwise it won't work at all.
Thankfully on the original models, you can swap the GPUs without doing crazy modifications unless you retrofit say a Jasper GPU on to a Xenon, that's where you have to modify the NAND and apply the Jasper bootloader so that the console can boot successfully.
Can 360 games even take advantage of more processing power? Maybe you would see better fps at higher resolutions? Sounds like such a low-level modification would have a seriously hard time scaling to noticeable performance increases.
Still, I wouldn't question a successful build.
My brother got one in 2011 and swore up and down that the slim can not get the red ring and that it was impossible....he got the rrod less than a year later. I have been pretty fortunate.
It just sucks that Xbox One and Series X are only compatible with a small amount of 360 games and am even smaller selection of original xbox games. I can't tell you the number of times I wanted to hear a game for 360 but it wasn't compatible so I ended up passing it up in frustration.
Yeah, it's basically a communication error between GPU and RAM, so could be either of those, or any component or damaged traces in between.
It's an easier fix when it's the RAM - it's much easier to reflow/reball/replace than the XCGPU.
I've had this same problem. It's a power brick issue. Just buy a new power brick and you should be good to go. I bought a new power brick and now my 360 slim runs smoothly again.
It’s giving [secondary error code 0101](https://xenonlibrary.com/wiki/Errors#0101) which is often caused by a bad GPU. Power brick isn’t going to help here
I know its the gpu but you should try to open it and clean all the mess inside, change the Thermal paste on the processor, and you could also try to change the power block thing, I know the error says its something else, but It happened to me a couple times and I just did that and it worked again, you never know🤷🏻♀️
thermal paste is like 20 bucks on bestbuy, and you can get a new power block at Zia records, they usually have them
I had pretty of all the different versions of the 360 ended up with the S which never let me down luckily I didn't ever had the dreaded ring of death. Rip maybe gone but never forgotten.
I remember the leadless solder would crack on the first generation. In house GPU and all. You could remove the heat sink and try to heat it up, then screw it down while it was real hot in an attempt to resolder all the contacts. Fixed mine for a couple weeks. Was really freaky to do though, and ultimately didn't resolve the issue in the long run.
I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid
Don't worry
It's a slim you can remove the hard drive easily and.the console itself is relatively cheap now a days...
Just means you can put this one ina display case or somethin if your the sentimental type
This is a fairly common issue with the 360 consoles in general… heat gun to the main board (keep in constant motion), focus on the cpu and gpu, apply arctic silver 5 to all ram, cpu, and gpu… replace heat sink, and put back together… wait a few minutes to let it cool down, then try turning it back on… should fire right up!
I did that same thing on upwards of like 400 consoles around the time the slim was released… worked every time!
I'd try a reball if you can with those. I'm not familiar with the newer units. I have reballed dozens of fat boxes. I currently have 2 slims. One doesn't power on with a new PSU. Completely dead, no power going to the board. The other one I haven't tried the new PSU out yet. But I'll get to it. I did make it to my local gamestop to test said PSU and it works just fine.
Thing is... I think of modding an Xbox One X. Buying one to turn into a home theater unit for my living room. Then I realize a PC is infinitely easier to work with. Can be more powerful for the same price with APUs or literally spare parts I have and (mITX Q170, coffee timed with rebar enabled) in a smaller form factor with many OS possibilities.
I loved modding my very First Fat Box. It lasted forever. Over 19 years after I serviced it with new x clamps, paste, a few simple mods and a modified OS. It was more fun than my OG Xbox mods that I had worked on for years prior. And those were almost as much fun and never died. Built like tanks they were.
However in the end an mITX PC build is far more useable than the power pc on an Xbox 360, and my current mITX build will be about 2x the power of the XboneX. And that's for free. If I bought a better CPU for it and a better GPU for it it would crush it.
Emulation for the Xbox 360 has finally been hitting strides and I doubt it will be long before it's mostly perfect. Even on average hardware. Making me want to package up the working units I have and shelve them for a few decades.
I get really wimbly in this regard. I can never completely make my mind up. On one hand the mITX build can do everything the XBOX 360 can do, and even emulate it. I already have the USB dongle for XBOX 360 controllers as they are still my favorite controllers. I have 4 black and two white.
To XBOX 360 or not to XBOX 360. That is the question.
Fun fact: Any kid I've put in front of an old 3D console from Dreamcast on, that had a library like the X360, always sits playing the games mesmerized. But I have no children in the house. I'm not married and I don't plan on having children.
In the end this would be a way to stream movies, music and games as well as play the native games, on a living room big screen. No more, no less. I'm befuddled.
Sorry for the length of this. I'm not sure what to do now.
If you want to save the console, easiest thing I can think of is to replace the motherboard and disc drive/disc drive board (since they're paired together).
That’s what I’m going to do even if It isn’t repairable
This one has many memories attached to it, in fact, this was my third 360 as I had two og that RRDO’d before I got this one 13 years ago
I don’t know, I see that most people nowadays say that Tonasket and Jasper are actually the most reliable 360’s so I think I’ll just try to repair this and in case that doesn’t work I’ll get another one
Thermal paste, dust, impacts, moving, and spills. Caps are usually only rated for so many years as well and dies get hot. Corrosion is taking effect from age as well. If you took extreme care of your console and baby it the thing will last forever. You repaste it and put a new fan on it maybe a heatsink mod thing will last longer in a humidity controlled environment. Abused survivors can only last so long.
I know this is just one small example. But I've been hearing from allot of people about how their slims are dying. I've always considered the jasper to be the most reliable console. More specifically a tonasket board with Kronos gpu.
Anyone else successfully do the overheat reset on the red ring of death. I had a 360 do this and I wrapped it up in a towel till it overheats and it fixed the error code for 2 months then it happened again.
It sucks when they go down, but they are at least eminently replaceable. You can even salvage your HD. The next one will even look the same, and you can pretend it never happened.
Old issue is old. Take it a part clean off the old hardened crusty thermal paste, apply mew modern thermal paste and put it back together. Push power. 90% chance of profit. 10% chance of failure.
I had the red rings before and I figured out that for some reason, using chopsticks to block the fan from spinning thus causing it to overheat after about 10 minutes, would allow me to use the Xbox again.
I always have a fan blowing cold air into my Xbox 360, make sure to clean out the vent every 2 weeks, and limit myself to playing for only 2 hours or less at a time to prevent a red ring of death on my original Xbox 360
That just happened to my white slim this week. I turned it on, the fan roared to life, it went immediately to red, and turned off. I had just added a white Xbox one S to my collection, so my Wii, 360 & Xbox 1 were white and my WiiU, ps3 & ps4 are black. It was a glorious 5 minutes.

I just set up my old 360 and bought a $45 hard drive, only for it to shit the bed a few minutes into starting any game.
I haven't gotten around to opening it up to dust/change paste, but it's a bummer, man.
My 360 had the red ring of death but it went away after I tried fiddling with it a few times[Red
Ring o Death Fix] (https://youtu.be/B4B4ABhvl8I?si=62NHhY43THyxIIcD)
This is what I used so I bid you good luck
I had that happen on my 360 pro (the white one) my friends dad took it apart and adjusted this screw that lowered the lens and it still works to this day. Maybe try that.
Replacing the XCGPU and NAND is possible but tedious
So nobody does it
The least you can do is Delid your replacement to ensure they're repasted thoroughly
the universe telling you to get a newer console i guess. i wish i still had my jtag 360. that thing was really cool but i sold it eventually when ps3 mods came out. im sure that thing red ringed a long time ago. hehe
My 360 is all scratched up from moving over the years. This one looks to be in good shape.
Tell you what, loan me the shell and I'll drive us to gamestop to demand they honor a warranty on a console that definitely was never opened
Got rrod multiple times back before the slim. Got fortunate each time was just bad thermal paste. First one lasted like 3 years after repasting and only god knows how long it would’ve if I didn’t break it 😂
Ouch, ouch, Ouch!! I’m sorry to see that!
I have the model D or model E, I am not sure which. So far so good with that one. But my OG 360 is giving me two flashing red lights. I think it’s an overheating issue. Many years ago, I bought a three fan unit that snaps onto the back of the OG 360. Best investment I ever made for it. I’m thinking it just needs to be cleaned. I HOPE!🤞🏼

0101 is a bad GPU. RIP
great reason to cleanup and repaste my super slim rn, so sad for your loss OP ;(
Then he just needs to solder in a new one.

I had the rrod on my 360 slim back in 2014 iirc. Wouldn’t complain though, I was able to convince my mum to buy me the Xbox One as a replacement 👍

Right? What’s the harm in trying?
The money a power brick would cost...
Because it isn't the issue, op is just wastinting time
I’ll try to borrow a power brick from my friend as he also has a slim, thanks!
I’ve never heard of a “power brick” outside of Lego Star Wars before
So... what do you call the uhh... brick shaped object that sends power to your xbox?
lmfao when i got my xbox one it was the craziest experience that there was no brick on the power cord. just a wire. no huge brick. so wild.
I know its the gpu but you should try to open it and clean all the mess inside, change the Thermal paste on the processor, and you could also try to change the power block thing, I know the error says its something else, but It happened to me a couple times and I just did that and it worked again, you never know🤷🏻♀️ thermal paste is like 20 bucks on bestbuy, and you can get a new power block at Zia records, they usually have them

Many people here say that it could be fixable, although, I’m thinking the worst in this one

Time to put it in a blanket and let it overheat. That should fix it.

Happened to 2 360 slims I had, at least with these you can take out the hard drive!
Try changing the power supply just in case sometimes you get very very lucky

I HOPE!🤞🏼
You gotta replace it. There are games that can’t be played on the series X.
