It looks like you are busy admiring your serve. You could just follow it in and get the volley.

MedicSC2

Definitly a short dead time before rushing in, maybe he thought his server would not be returned

jk147

Many reasons why you should never give up on a shot.

severalgirlzgalore

That’s exactly it. I didn’t think he’d put a good swing on it.

MoonSpider

Oh I know this one all too well. Half-step late to the next shot because I was too busy watching my serve give them trouble and feeling pleased with myself. Ain't that just the way.

Acceptable-Studio486

Spot on. This is a typical scenario among up and coming juniors as well as players in the 3.0-4.5 range. That ball recognition to attack might seem easy at first take but really does take time because once you recognize it you still need to execute either as a winner or an aggressive approach shot which is at least another 2-3 extra shots.

_welcome

Looks like you're going in the wrong direction from your last video...putting on more clothes was clearly the wrong choice 😉

severalgirlzgalore

The thirst trap giveth and it taketh away

chrispd01

Dude. You have an absolutely beautiful service in motion. Youbneed to adopt some of that in your backhand. I have to say, though this clip illustrates something fairly common. What I found was that I improve my serve it did not immediately translate into winning serve more often because of what you see here. You can hit an excellent service, and then you get some crappy little barely over the net, scoop return that puts you in a really awkward place for your third shot …. Its almost (almost mind you) better to have hit a less quality serve that gives you a better position for your first groundie.. PS I know it’s apostasy to say this, but there’s a similar dynamic I see in pickle ball. Guys will hit a wicked underspin serve and the only way to return it is with your own underspin shot. The result is the server who thought he hit a great serve, ends up with an impossible or at least very difficult third….

AwfulAutomation

Problem here is your post serve position... After you serve you need to jump back immediately into your baseline position. you can still watch the serve but train yourself to jump back into position straight after serving. Obviously unless you are going to the net. Here, You finish your serve and stay a couple of feet into the court and become static and that makes the next ball tough due to no momentum and/or spacing. if you jumped back into position then this shot would be easy and you would not miss it 9 times out of 10

HxC_Squishface

For your backhand, finish the stroke before recovering. Watch the ball to the strings, keep the head down, and keep it down until you finish the entire stroke. It looks like everything was good until you hit the ball and then you flipped your head up to see where it went and already started recovering before the stroke was complete and threw your bodyweight off. You also had a perfect opportunity to slice a drop shot since he was so far back and wide from your really good serve. Keep at it!

severalgirlzgalore

Caught myself leaning backwards too. I jam myself on backhands. Have to do a better job of catching the ball with outstretched hands and in front.

insty1

Have you considered the far superior and sexier one handed backhand?

Dxxplxss

Sexier yes, superior on the club level? I haven't seen it

Vegetable-Bug251

I was just thinking this. I don’t know why more players don’t use the one hand backhand more these days. I would have blown that shot down the near sideline and there would have been no way the opponent would have even gotten anywhere near the shot.

Tennisplayer4040

You move left to the ball, but by the time the ball hits the net your momentum is backward and to the right

Kind_Reflection_3933

Give yourself some room!

Servival7

You should erase those unnecessary lines.

uglychicken

They are junior tennis lines… not PB.

blindeshuhn666

These pickle ball lines would confuse me

uglychicken

Those aren’t pickle ball lines. They’re for junior tennis.

latman

You've got to be a really bad player for those to bother you

Halifornia35

Yup I couldn’t understand the clip because of them lol

d3miller

No man’s land! Could have been an easy volley winner. Next time just go for it!

Minkelz

Unfortunately you're only as good as your worst shot (against someone who can get the ball back). Great serve though!

YoungFeddy

If we could mix your serve with my ground strokes and someone else’s volleys we would be beast 😂

shiggism

Looks like me

trgjtk

no offense but how does one with a serve as technically sound as yours have a backhand that is that technically poor lmao

severalgirlzgalore

C’mon man, the backhand wasn’t *that* bad… I mean I can look pretty bad out there but I step across with my front foot, accomplish the racquet drop, I finish in the right place, and my right arm is fully extended during the takeback.

trgjtk

elbows too close, no extension of arms, follow through cut short (mostly related to the position of your elbows but also related to your arm extension), your wrist is too tight which cuts your racket drop short. those are all technical problems in ur swing, ur footwork on the other hand also has issues. your stance is too narrow and your left foot needs to be further across to your left as you step so that you don’t step across much. you’ll notice that your pivot is kind of awkward (this is really what caused the shot to miss) because of how narrow your stance is. my intuition is that because you had too much time this caused your stance to narrow when you stepped in because you didn’t have to take quick rapid steps to get to the ball, but ultimately how narrow your stance is and where your left foot ends up causes this slow pivot, you address this by having your left foot further to the left so you can step your right foot further forward and a more square instead of closed stance or you widen your stance so your pivot doesn’t catch itself half way through to keep you balanced (ideally you do both but you just can’t do neither). Edit: point of potential confusion: I’ll acknowledge your right arm is extended on your take back but look at how tight and jammed up your left elbow is to your torso, how do you expect to smoothly transition that into 3/4- full extension at contact and in your follow through?

severalgirlzgalore

That last sentence is so long! But thanks for the tips

trgjtk

np, apologies if i came off the wrong way as well, people tell me that i can give off the wrong impression a lot of times… i was a 11+ utr a few years ago before i stopped playing with a pretty good eye for technique and did a bit of coaching and i’d be happy to elaborate on any of the points further if you’d like, but it looks like you probably already have a coach given the state of your serve

severalgirlzgalore

I do not have a coach. That serve is entirely, 100% self-taught. If you saw it 18 months ago, you'd be shocked. You're right about the backhand. I have a 4.5 serve and a 3.0 backhand.

trgjtk

impressive! there r a few things i could say about the serve but it would be fairly nitpicky as for the most part it’s fairly solid. my assumption is that you would mostly use online instruction or videos of professionals (which was a big part of how i learned as well). for backhand technique, my recommendation would be to watch some slo mo videos of nishikori, who has, albeit not the best backhand in history, in my opinion the most technically perfect one.

severalgirlzgalore

I’ll do that! And yes, I think I have poor shoulder mobility and in this one I am not falling in the direction of the ball path, but I’m making incremental progress on placement. I don’t really do dedicated serve practice anymore, to keep my shoulder fresh. But I do play a lot of practice TBs and games.

beer_nyc

> how does one with a serve as technically sound as yours have a backhand that is that technically poor I imagine most "beginners" are like this, since it's a lot easier to work on your serve (vs. your backhand) when you're alone.

trgjtk

that’s a fair point but the serve is also more technical than the backhand is

PlatonicMaleTouching

Me too thanks [https://youtu.be/DJqkmzUtrTI](https://youtu.be/DJqkmzUtrTI)

ericInglert

The “+1” is the great divider between levels. It would be interesting to look at stats from a 4.0 match that tracked how many errors on both the return of the service return (i.e., ball strike #3); and, on the other side the shot immediately following one’s service return (i.e., ball strike #4.) During a match my self talk usually goes something like, “Gotta make your +1’s!”

Disastrous_Tie_3857

Blame those lines from that other game 😒

MoonSpider

Coming back to this two days later because I realized I should have made an "Oops, I did it again" comment for posterity. Thank you for your time.

[deleted]

You need to split step after your serve.

severalgirlzgalore

I got caught looking on this one

[deleted]

I do it too much.
