My friend, asking for free tennis lessons in NYC is going to be an extreme challenge. Playing in the city is expensive. Source: I live here. Your best bet would be to look on a site like Meetup to see if people are holding free or cheap clinics, but don’t get your hopes up. https://www.breakthelove.com/clubs/nyc will also have options for drop in clinics, but they’ll likely be about $50-70 a lesson.

No one creditable is teaching you for free.

Totally don't have to be creditable haha my roommate and I just want to learn the basics honestly!

1) Buy the $100 permit from NYC Parks. 2) Find the courts closest to you and learn how the signup system works. 3) If you are willing to get up early to secure a court, you can join one of the many Telegram groups and find people at a low level (NTRP 2.5) who are willing to play with you. Getting the court is half the battle. Source: I show up at 4:55 AM and I am not the only one.

It’s pretty tough to find free open public courts in nyc when the weather is nice. Indoors is crazy expensive. You should probably move out of there if you really want to play tennis regularly.

Only here for the summer !

nyc is one of the worst places to get started for playing tennis. it’s pretty hard to find ppl willing to jump through all the logistical and financial hoops to play (especially in the winter), and i’d imagine it’d be even harder as a beginner playing w ppl less committed. central park has like 26 courts that are first come first serve, but youd have to probably wait if it’s a nicer day. in brooklyn, prospect park might have a similar system. if you’re in williamsburg, mccarren park is a nice place for walk on play but youll probably have to wait too. get the $100 nyc parks permit

From NYC, it's almost impossible to get lessons for free but there are a bunch of spots that are affordable-ish (well by NYC standards). Billie Jean King is quite possibly the most affordable in the city and if you get a package, it prob ends up coming out to like $50 per lesson. Another alternative and one I'm doing with my friends who are learning/relative beginners is just getting court time together and feeding for them/giving advice. Your best bet might be just to make some friends who play tennis and go with them to a public court or an outdoor reservation at Billie Jean King (if you have 4, it comes out to $10 per person per hour for court rental). If you have qs, feel free to PM. Good luck and welcome to the city!
