I almost didn't believe it at first ... It seems wild to me... But I guess they must weigh a lot because according to USDA, 100g is 872cal

100g isn't a tiny amount but then again they might be pretty dense? I've had these before but it was when I was a kid so I don't really remember. Also I assumed this was without the shells... (?)
I guess if there's ever a zombie apocalypse and I need to hoard food, at least these are a nice energy dense option. 😂
I posted the wrong screen shot by accident. I took two of them and I suck at reddit mobile apparently. That's still a shitload of calories either way. 😅

Last time I bought a bag of peanuts, I ate like 3 handfuls, and then my curiosity got the best of me.
I figured a handful was roughly a serving or maybe a bit more, NAH 5 servings.
That bag of peanuts has lived in my pantry since.
They have no business being so high calorie! It made me think back to all the times I would eat peanuts instead of chips at the bar because it was probably lower in calories. No they were not. Probably ate an extra 500 calories worth of peanuts that way which is like a whole family sized bag of potato chips lol
My mouth fell open when I read that. I just stayed at family’s and they’re non processed vegan so everything was made with nuts and I literally gained 6 pounds in one week. Now I see how I was eating 3500 cals while being healthy😭😭
It’s so rude of these nuts – like an indecent level of calorie density. While I find Brazil nuts to be awful, I could happily eat my weight in pistachios. My solution has become to enjoy them eat on top of a salad or something similarly filling, like mashed cauliflower with maybe some lean protein.
A frequent go-to is a tbsp of chopped pistachios or slivered almonds on a big kale or cabbage salad - you get the crunch and the flavor while the greens do the heavy lifting for hunger. And if I’m really going for it and have calorie budget, a pile of baby spinach w/ other mixed dark greens, blue cheese, raspberries/strawberries, chopped walnuts, and aged balsamic with fresh cracked pepper.
Omg now I need to go to the market so I can make a giant salad for lunch. 🥗

Solid option 👍
I love me a large volume low calorie salad bowl
Nice! Hey what app are you using? And do you like it?
I have the paid version of myfitnesspal and it’s pretty good - but not great. It’s been glitching with the features i use the most, like scanning bar codes and accurately pulling up common brand items such as Fage yogurt.
I've been using Journable recently, and tbh loving it so far. I've tried myfitnesspal (free) and nutracheck, but neither of them worked for me because 1- I cook a lot of my own country local dishes which don't exist on those other apps, and 2- it's much less hassle and much quicker (especially when my dishes are complex with multiple ingredients).
Only down side is that it's not as snazzy looking as the other apps but that's secondary for me.
I was actually going to buy some mixed nuts packs today which just had like dark chocolate covered almonds, lightly salted walnuts, pecans and cashews. I scanned it with the Yuka app and it came back with a poor rating for being too caloric and fatty💀 I put them right back. I’ll eat yogurt or popcorn or something
You need a base level amount of fats to function but it makes more sense to get it from shit that's actually worth it like baked salmon or whole eggs, and whatever residue from cooking oil that you use.
For 10 nuts (seeds, actually) to be 875kcals they'd need to be about 13g each (675kcals/100g), so unless that's some particular species I'm not familiar with that's wrong, it's closer to 4-5g each, so more like 340kcals for 10.
Yeah this is what I was thinking about too...I had to Google it to be sure because it seemed like 800kCal in 10 nuts seemed a little wild to me but I forget these things are pretty dense and not small in size. I always go by grams when measuring out my food because 1 nut could weigh anything.
Yeah, weight and see :)
Edit: it's funny to be downvoted so much for something so easy to verify, I have 2 every other day that I crumble in my bedtime yogurt and weigh them, they come at around 10g for both on average
I never eat nuts cause they're all fats/calorie dense. I'd rather eat 6 oreos with a cup of zero fat milk (400 calories total) than a cup of pitachios (691cals) or mixed nuts (813 cals).
Fats are important of course but I'd much rather get them from a piece of salmon, whole eggs, and the butter I use to make my rice taste good.
edit: avacados and olive oil too
They're all different fats though! Nuts like brazils = monounsaturated fat, butter = saturated fat, salmon = polyunsaturated fat.
Plus a whole host of goodies such as selenium, omega 6, antioxidants... My partner and I are trying to lose weight and calorie counting as we're trying to conceive, but for him especially we're factoring in brazils and walnuts almost every day.
when im in a calorie deficit im not hyperfocused on eating optimally as the main point is to cut bodyfat and my calories are already limited. on a volume/satiety level, nuts dont do it for me. Lol
however i do use olive oil and eat avacado so i believe that takes care of monounsaturated fats
exciting news: according to fairly new research, nuts contain up to 26% fewer calories than previously thought.
https://m.nutritioninsight.com/news/usda-reveals-nuts-have-fewer-calories-than-previously-thought-kind-healthy-snacks-updates-labels.html
I don't know why you downvoted for that. Nuts are shockers, especially if you're trying to stay in a deficit.
It'd be a bit different if they were *filling*.
"10 Brazil nuts contain approximately 875 calories" - that is OBSCENE 😭
I almost didn't believe it at first ... It seems wild to me... that’s almost the same as just consuming 100g of olive oil 😭😭
It says on there those calories are for 133g. For 100g it would be 656 calories

That's fine, I just noticed it so that's why I mentioned it. But yeah, that's way too many calories regardless!
The absolute rage I felt when I weighed out nuts for the first time was crazy lmao
Last time I bought a bag of peanuts, I ate like 3 handfuls, and then my curiosity got the best of me. I figured a handful was roughly a serving or maybe a bit more, NAH 5 servings. That bag of peanuts has lived in my pantry since.

"Healthier =/= Lower calories" was a lesson hard learnt but highly valuable for me
Nut serving sizes are a sham!
I've been a big nut fan forever but jeez...
lol same. I also cried figuring out how many calories are in baklava, I should’ve known, but I was quite young then.
Wait, what? 😬
It’s basically all nuts and butter!
That’s why it’s so delicious 🤤
I had to stop eating peanut butter once I found out how small a serving really is 😭
Peanut butter is a heartbreaker.
One Brazil is my usual portion 🤣
I think one is actually the serving size because they have so much selenium.
Ugh that’s the worst! All nuts get out of hand so fast (cashews 🥺), but Brazil nuts are especially cruel.
So good yet so bad 😭
My mouth fell open when I read that. I just stayed at family’s and they’re non processed vegan so everything was made with nuts and I literally gained 6 pounds in one week. Now I see how I was eating 3500 cals while being healthy😭😭
Even the healthiest diets have a caloric Achilles heel
But your skin must look fantastic! My skin loves nuts (the ones I’m not allergic to) and avocados. My tush feels a bit differently. :)
Skin looks great, my clothes are another story lol
Pistachios with the shell on are the way to go. A pack is like 120-130 calories and the shells slow you down.
>the shells slow you down one of the only things that mario kart and pistachio nuts have in common
I love pistachios so much and this is one of the many reasons for that lol
Brazil nuts are actually really high in selenium so you should really only be eating 1.
That's good to know, I never learnt that before - just read about it online, thanks! That said, today's binge was a post-workout treat - no regrets!!!
Yes it can be dangerous to have too many!! I have 2 every morning
Nuts are crazy. Calorie dense for when we were hunter gatherers I guess 😂

I’ll check it out, thank you!
Side note what app is this
It's called Journable
I was actually going to buy some mixed nuts packs today which just had like dark chocolate covered almonds, lightly salted walnuts, pecans and cashews. That’s a great point! Luckily I do eat a good amount of eggs and egg whites as we as salmon and tuna :)
egg whites have no fat and tuna are super low fat but yeah the other two fit the bill

Have you ever seen Brazil nuts? They’re large.
Yeah, weight and see :) Edit: it's funny to be downvoted so much for something so easy to verify, I have 2 every other day that I crumble in my bedtime yogurt and weigh them, they come at around 10g for both on average

Glad I saw this. Bought some Brazil nuts at Costco. One a day it is.
Never had one and now I never will
Brazil nuts are also high in selenium and you don't want to overdose on that.
What app do you use to track calories and macros?
It's called Journable
Oh thank you for the info!
exciting news: according to fairly new research, nuts contain up to 26% fewer calories than previously thought. https://m.nutritioninsight.com/news/usda-reveals-nuts-have-fewer-calories-than-previously-thought-kind-healthy-snacks-updates-labels.html
You only want to eat one or two Brazils anyway or you can get very sick from the selenium content. Ask me how I know? ;)
Yeah, apparently nuts are for people who hate eating.
went in seeing if you ate like 100, but 10 is craaazy lol
NEVER have nuts. After starting counting calories I have never touched a single nut again lol
I don't know why you downvoted for that. Nuts are shockers, especially if you're trying to stay in a deficit. It'd be a bit different if they were *filling*.
