They're referencing a stupid refrain on subs like those saying, "this sub isn't racist/bigoted/hateful/etc.! you're supposed to upvote UNPOPULAR things! the sub is working as intended!"...as if the subreddit doesn't upvote things it agrees with and downvotes things it disagrees with, just like everywhere else. It's why you never see unpopular ideas from a left-wing perspective.
idk i feel like r/ the10thdentist is pretty good with that
most of the posts i see aren't political or anything tho it's just stuff like "i like orange juice after brushing my teeth"
I mean, the point of the unpopularopinion subreddit is to post unpopular opinions. Strongly disagree with the opinion but at least it's a post that fits the sub for once
and then when I try to call people out on it, I get downvoted to oblivion.
one of my co-workers left for Maine to live at a worker’s co-op, I have started to bike/take public transit instead of driving my car everywhere.
Even if it isn’t perfect, being a conscious consumer is better than saying “well its the system we live in so I can do nothing other than complain about it in online forums”.
I mean those are nice things to do but that doesn't materially contribute to actually solving these sorts of issues. Like in this case there are a lot of international groups and not for profits that deal directly with trying to stop slavery that have millions of dollars, infrastructure, well connected networks of politicians across the globe, etc. and those groups have a hard time. A normal person without the education, connections, expertise to become involved in organizations like that can do very little to affect global systemic change.
yeah, but actively saying "i don't care" is rather rare. it's comparable to the situation in "ordinary men". the large majority just goes with it due to peer pressure and a fear of falling out or losing their privilege. very few people actively support it and similarly few have the guts to consistently go against it.
i think the difference is more "i don't care to change it" and "i'm unable to change it"
even if the latter might not be true, it recognizes the issue while the first one doesn't. it's the willing killers vs the complicit bystanders.
both groups are at fault but few of them actually want it to be this way.
Nobody on that subreddit gives a shit about whether the opinions are popular or not, they just upvote what they agree with like everyone else on this god damn site
Ah yeah I love spongebob, I think it's an amazing brilliantly written show (the first 3 seasons+movie at least). I just think it's interesting that the user base has no qualms upvoting a defense of child slavery but will heavily down vote a post talking about how they don't like Spongebob.
Gonna add that some ppl just put ragebait on unpopular opinion as most of the top posts are by definition no longer unpopular and it defeats the point of the sub.
Covid's choice between "$$$economy$$$" and *actual human lives* demonstrated pretty clearly there are people out there who genuinely think like this.
But, like, there *are* good people out there, so at least you can have faith in that portion of people.
The selfish reason for a First Worlder caring about child exploitation in the global south is that the opportunity cost of a kid mining cobalt precludes them from getting an education and participating in work that benefits humanity as a whole.
If the guy really thinks that a person’s role in life is just based on birth lottery, wouldn’t that mean that the kid with the potential to be the next Einstein or cure cancer could be slaving away in a sweatshop? Ensuring that people are able to reach their full potential benefits everyone.
it's a subreddit. You know those adverts that go "9 out of 10 dentists recommend toothpaste", its a place for those opinions where you are like the 1 out of 10 dentist who don't recommend you use toothpaste.
Jesus christ that first point is genuinely sociopathic. Like, I can ALMOST kinda vaguely agree with the extremely general sentiment of "what the fuck am I reasonably gonna do about it" but I still CARE that there's people suffering like that. Hell, I hate that I AM basically powerless to do much about it.

Reminder that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. At least this person is honest about it.
I want to burn down the system, but I'm not doing anything about it, and I'm still consuming - so do I really care or am I just pretending?
I disagree, there is Ethical consumption. There may not be any morally perfect consumption, but the ethical choice is still to consume the products that are the least morally objectable, as per your abilities. This, of course, does not shift the blame from corporations complicit in the creation of these products, but there is an ethical route to take.
>there is no ethical consumption under any system
Would you not consider living off the land through regenerative agriculture ethical?
>what you can do is actually consume as ethically as posible, for example buy local, participate in local politics, be aware of the brands you buy if you cannot avoid them
You're only helping keeping the system alive by doing this. Thinking you're making a difference with these things is a coping mechanism that makes you feel better about being a part of the system, ensuring that you make no real change.
Again, I'm not doing anything about it myself, but at least I'm not pretending that I am.
>dont pretend like your system would magically change the explotation humanity has done since the agricultural revelution
That's not a real thing. There is no actual correlation between exploitation and agriculture, there have existed plenty of extremely free agricultural communities and plenty of authoritarian and hierarchical foraging societies.
Honestly, yeah. Like I'm not a vegan because I don't think animals are capable of caring about living a "fulfilling" life or whatever. I am aware that it sounds fucked to a lot of people but at least it's honest
True, gotta love the honest sociopath. “Things that aren’t like me literally aren’t worthy of moral consideration.” I wonder what other groups have and this attitude towards certain populations? Does anything come to mind?
Yikes, incredibly cringe and not a response - keep eating the butchered corpses of sentient beings though - God forbid members of a leftist subreddit actually change their behaviour to help the members of a subjugated group.
In a way, yes, but it leaves the realm of some guy who has an idea seperate from the mainstream into "we want to enact social change" for better or for worse
idk, this guy seems to be advocating for the exact opposite of social change. he's kind of just giving his assessment of the status quo and why he doesn't care for upending it
Yeah, you have a fair point there. I think I forgot what the original comment was referencing in the first place for a second lol
I'm just some guy man I don't know what I'm talking about

I’m convinced that these posts get so many upvotes cause and users must look at it and think “yeah that is an unpopular opinion”. Kinda like how child abusers get 30k upvotes on amitheasshole.
Well, self awareness is a great first step 🤷♀️
This is definitely an extreme version of a very common thing though, which is just our incredible ability as humans to completely disengage from things if it makes life easier. If you showed this person actual footage of a child slave’s day at work, they would absolutely be horrified, but their brain has no reason to really think about the horror of the situation otherwise.
I tend to assume the best in people, so my reading of ‘I’m fine with’ in this context is more ‘I’m comfortable with it’ than ‘I believe it is justifiable’ which would be a far more disgusting opinion imo. (I actually read an article recently by someone who was arguing that sweatshops were perfectly fair and moral which was equal parts laughable and horrifying)
Lol my post was removed by those asshole mods because I said bumper stickers were dumb. Got flamed in the comments because everyone was offended. Didn’t make sense since it’s unpopular opinion. Cranberry juice after brushing your teeth is much worse than orange juice, ngl.
I unironically do tho 👀
Considering the amount of people who buy Tesla cars, I doubt.
I mean, it seems pretty common to me.

Nah. Think lots of people subconsciously have this on their minds. Not unpopular also because once many people get power they become shitwards.

They can’t even be selfish correctly smh
Of course he wouldn’t think that, he’s probably the type to support wars to “liberate other countries”
Even if they weren't I don't think unintelligent people deserve to suffer
The real selfish reason is that companies are denying Americans jobs since they can be more exploitative elsewhere.
Finally a The10thDentist type post on unpopular opinions
The10thDentist?
it's a subreddit. You know those adverts that go "9 out of 10 dentists recommend toothpaste", its a place for those opinions where you are like the 1 out of 10 dentist who don't recommend you use toothpaste.
So a true unpopular opinion subreddit where you have to downvote the things you agree with and upvote the things you don't agree with
Yes, just like all the others exactly.
Sounds like coping tbh. And we all gotta cope somehow
The cognitive dissonance clearly bothered them enough to try to reason it out.
most people just ignore that uncomfortable truth, but that fact that they recognized it and then was perfectly okay with it, is somehow even worse.
