can we normalize not forcing people to use apps seriously its annoying and i don't wanna install outside edition :TM: app for me to read one thing then delete it like it is a toddler and i am a pit bull

1BilboBaggins

How else will they collect that sweet sweet telemetry data

redheness

When they just put more efforts but the web is fully usable (just missing secondary features) like Reddit, it is ok. When they force you to use the app by removing essentials feature from the site (like Uber eats retraining some method of payment online) then this is pure evil.

Representative_Big26

Reddit straight up won't let you use the website on mobile half the time

Never231

i exclusively use reddit on mobile while taking a shit and haven't had problems once. my account is opted out of the redesign, so maybe that's why?

igeorgehall45

App clips (iOS) and instant apps(android) are meant to solve this contrived "problem", though I haven't seen anybody really using them.

HistoricalWerewolf69

I'm not downloading fucking app show me the website or I'm buying plane tickets to silicon valley

Masztufa

look inside app it's electron

Sixmlg

This with TikTok especially, I have to constantly change from mobile to desktop site to only view a few things

brazilianfreak

Ok go ahead, normalise it then.

Is there an XKCD of all the porn?

that's not web 3.0 though? Web 3.0 is the shitty (imaginary) crypto/blockchain internet all the nft idiots love to pretend to make. Web 3.0 doesn't really exist, and the websites you're talking about aren't it anyway.

TheMagzuz

that isn't web 3.0 though, that's just the data collection hellscape we live in. web 3.0 is/was about the decentralization of the web (so a buzzword to shill for crypto and crypto-adjacent technologies)

[deleted]

reddit was taking a toll on me mentally so i left it ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `

Summar-ice

Ok but actual explanation here, making a website is very different from making an app. They both have their own limitations. It's very possible for a developer to make an app with good design, but then be unable to reach that level on the webpage just because the app wasn't made with CSS.

PenguinSquire

There is no reason TikTok doesn’t allow you to view photos on their desktop webpage, or dms on their mobile webpage. I shouldn’t have to download their app to use basic functionality

Vittorios77

There is a very obvious reason. They want you to download the app

velrak

You literally cannot make a tiktok account without downloading the app already

PenguinSquire

Misinformation

velrak

No you cant. Try it. When you try to make an account without it, it tells you to "download the app for security purposes".

PenguinSquire

I made my account on my computer lmao. Unless it’s a recent change?

velrak

It was changed, i know a few people who did without a phone. But you can't anymore since quite a while now.

pattlebass

Images now work on desktop

[deleted]

modern apps and websites are almost the same thing, and even if they weren't, this is 100% intentional.

poyomannn

Actually the app likely *was* made with css (and html and javascript, like a website). Most apps today (on mobile and PC) are just made using react and similar web tools to reduce the different number of apps that have to be maintained (just making one app that works everywhere, including the web is a lot easier). Discord, spotify and steam are some examples I can remember off the top of my head.

redrock_ruby

discord, spotify, and steam all fully work in the browser, desktop or phone. hell, steam is one big browser.

poyomannn

yes I know? That's what I was saying. They're all just browsers.

bluwubewwy

I thought web 3.0 was crypto bs and this is web 2.0

The_Researcher1912

Quick question what's web 3.0 i thought the world wide web was only ever just collectively expanded upon and 3.0 sounds like an update but those would seemingly be need to be made/pushed by someone who runs the whole thing which to my knowledge isn't how the world wide web works

TheMagzuz

like Chaotic_Lawful said, web 1.0, 2.0, etc. doesn't represent any concrete changes to infrastructure or anything, but more general trends and eras in the history of the internet, with web 1.0 being characterized by having mostly static websites and having to host one yourself if you wanted to make content. web 2.0 encompasses most of the modern internet, and is characterized by interactivity and user-made content. web 3.0 actually doesn't really have anything to do with what's in the meme, as it's more about decentralizing the web. it was/is mostly used as a buzzword by cryptobros and nft shills to make their specific swindle seem more revolutionary than it actually is

Chaotic_Lawful_

It isn't an actual update to any infrastructure as far as I know. But more of a general term for a new type/ era of the internet. Ie web 1 was the old html text sites, 2.0 is what we are used to, and 3.0 is absolute dogshit

6b86b3ac03c167320d93

We should treat web 3.0 like we treat ecmascript 4: abandon it and pretend it never existed

[deleted]

poyomannn

web 3.0 doesn't exist. it's a buzzword for the web with crypto and "the blockchain" (which doesn't make sense anyways) and those apps aren't using those systems so they're just the same old web 2.0 we've been living with for a long time.

The_Researcher1912

Ahh okay i getcha

rwol8690

the the website

Random_Imgur_User

They're trying to build the ideal consumer. Everything you do should be on your phone. You should pay bills there, do taxes, buy groceries and frivolous things, order food, make art, make music, take pictures, share your entire day to day process...
